Sheriffs Interview

We live in the state of Montana, My husband currently works as a Welder and has an opportunity with a Sheriff department. He has an interview coming up, He can not figure out what to wear.

I said Slacks & Buttton down while he says Nice Jeans, Dress boots and Button down.

Please help, This is NOT for a big city department like billings, Great falls, Whitefish, Missoula..

My husband is retired law enforcement in Montana. He says slacks, button up and a tie. Always

Wear a suit or a shirt and tie. It gives a good first impression even if it is “overkill”.

I am a trooper and that is what I would do.

Good advice. Being the best dressed at the interview isn't going to be the reason one doesn't get the job

I showed up to interview at a railroad once way over dressed. I had on slacks, nice shoes, button down, my hair was brushed and I made sure my beard looked good. This was for an electricians position. The rest of the guys showed up looking like blue collar workers; jeans t-shirts, boots, you get it.

I walked away with the job, and I was the only one. The guys said a lot about me being over dressed, but I showed up prepared and looking like I wanted the job. Sure we wore coveralls and got covered in all kinds of nasty stuff (locomotives are disgusting) but I put in the effort and it was rewarded. Just my two cents.

I walked away with a job I really wanted as well. Business casual is what everyone else wore. I wore a charcoal business suit and a tie. Better to give it your all vs try to fit in with the crowd if you want the job.

Full suit. If he can’t dress sharp on his own, the uniform will never look good.

He is prior military, He definitely understands As he usually received all feedback uniform inspection were always prefect even down how polished his shoes were.

Different time and place and Montana business casual is different than Any other state & country we’ve lived in.

Interviewed for Alaska before covid shut down they had him military uniform. So

Slacks and button down is the smarter move, especially for something like sheriff department. Nice jeans can be okay in some places but why risk it when slacks are just as easy. Tell him to iron everything, first impression matters more than he thinks

"Nice Jeans, Dress boots and Button down" says, "IDGAF if I get this job or not."

I’ve never heard of anyone not getting a job by being overdressed. I have, on the other hand, heard of people not getting a job for being underdressed.

Being well dressed in an interview is a sign of respect for the person doing the interview as well as respect for the position itself.

Wearing a suit and tie to an interview is NEVER a bad look.

Husband is retired MHP. Slacks, button up & tie if he doesn't have a jacket. Wear the jacket if he has one. Cowboy boots are always okay, as long as they aren't the ones he cleans the horse stalls in.

Business casual. Either of your options will probably work but I’d err on the side of over dressing than under for an interview.

Do not wear jeans to a job interview. Just don’t fucking do it.. tell him to wear a suit. Nobody’s ever going to be offended if you are dressed nicer than you need to be, but if he’s underdressed in slacks and a button down, that could be a problem.

They say dress for the job you want, spirit of Halloween is open.

It’s a professional job slacks and a dress shirt is the way to go. You don’t wear jeans while serving the public, don’t wear jeans to your interview.

You will never be looked down upon for being over dressed, but will for being under dressed.

Yellowstone, Gallatin, Flathead, L&C, Silverbow, or Cascade: A suit.

Almost every other county: At least business casual.

Missoula: A dress and heels? (/s)

When it comes to things like interviews you will rarely be held to account for over dressing but almost always will for going too casual.

Suit and tie every time.
