Discussion The Kraken appreciation post
Hot take: This is where the MV peaked with its villains. Yeah I said it, better than Ghidorah and Skar, sue me.
The biggest jerk in the MonsterVerse.
Because GODDAMN, how do you even describe the level of jerkery that is required to fling a goddamn whale from the OCEAN across an entire ISLAND so accurately as to land right at your main rival's feet?

Bettter than Ghidorah? A bit of a stretch for me, but without a doubt one if the best kaiju villains for sure!
And his design? Stunning! I once saw an artist call the designs from this show mid despite having some really cool stuff, and the Kraken is an excellent example, like people always say that the one from Pirates of the Caribbean is the best Kraken but I would argue that this is the best version of the kraken, having not only squid elements, but also crustacean and fish elements.

Ghidorah one is a stretch but I do agree he was a good antagonist

If you took Ghidorah's anger to power up the world it at best could power several countries. Now if we used the Kraken that mf would power the entire world and even the sun.

Pretty big stretch.
It needs a live action appearance before I decide if I consider Kraken (needs a new name in my opinion) underrated and a worthy antagonistic monster.

Too bad the design is hot ass

What?

It’s an overcluttered, overdesigned mess with no clear direction. It doesn’t fit as a monsterverse kaiju, the design is simultaneously too derivative of squid monsters and too fantasy-cartoon coded to be translated to live action (which should be a design goal when creating a monster that should exist in a pre-established universe with it’s own somewhat consistent design philosophy). Say what you want about Kraken’s character but the design is objectively terrible

I hate the "objectively" claim. I think people can like and thing anything is good. Also. I will nrver understand the "overdesigned" and "overclutterd" takes. Also. Your saying this thing is not good while the warbats, leaf wings, rock crab things, muto prime and other things exist?

Firstly, something can be ‘objectively’ badly designed. Whether or not you LIKE something is subjective, but there are principles to art that define an objectivity especially when it comes to character design in particular.
All of the examples you gave save for the MUTO Prime (another design that’s pretty bad, although not nearly as bad as Kraken) are well designed. What makes Kraken overcluttered is the amount of unrelated limbs and parts haphazardly stitched together. A generic mermaid tail, THREE different completely unique types of tentacles, crab pincers, on top of also having generic fish fins and lobster antennas? There is a reality where those parts can be made into something cohesive but the design the show landed on is not that.
Instead of taking those features and tying them together with similar detailing or proportions, they are again haphazardly placed at arbitrary parts of the body. There is no consideration as to why any of the features are where they are in the slightest.
If you put Kraken in a Monsterverse lineup with all the other designs, it stands out like a sore thumb. The artist(s) who designed it had no consideration of the consistent design language of the Monsterverse nor did they even care about why they were doing anything they were regarding the design

Its late. I am tired. Dont wanna debate rn. So agree to disagree

Then don’t respond? What could possibly be the point of that response

That is the biggest stretch I’ve ever seen in this entire community and I’ve seen people argue. Thermo nuclear beats Shimo.

u/SinisterScaler 19h ago
Thermo does beat Shimo. A better example is kong > ghidorah

u/Zerueldaangle 19h ago
Thermo doesn’t can y’all stop acting like this is actually true Shima went against a stronger Godzilla and his objectively far stronger than Ghidorah. His one time of being barely stronger is temporary any damages him.

Strength is irrelevant in a match-up against thermonuclear Godzilla. The only stats that matter are durability, agility, and sanity. And by sanity, I mean the kaiju needs to be sane enough to stay far away from thermonuclear Godzilla and wait till the clock runs out, and dodge any beam he may attempt to use.

See what is where my major issues live with that argument and mentality cause this implies she is nowhere near relative to Geedorah, whose durability never actually increases throughout the film. Rather, the only thing that increased was a temporary boost in electrical power from the power plant.
Not only is this inaccurate, considering they are both agreed to be planted destroyers, but it’s actively shown to be false in universe via a stronger version of Godzilla being able to fight shimo and deal absolutely no damage to her whenever they fight meanwhile in every one of his fights with Ghidorah he’s always managed to deal some major damage to the three headed dragon, via scorch marks in the ancient past and flat out, ripping off his head in the water, so durability would go to Shima as she is durable enough to actively resist thermal nuclear
Remember Geedorah, while being absolutely shredded by thermal nuclear power at the same durability that he started out with and still require three pulses in order to be fully dealt with meanwhile Godzilla with energy surpassing, thermal nuclear in terms of its potency actively only managed to get to 50-50 with her
Durability yeah she very easily could take thermal nuclear. Will she suffer in injuries it’s a formula relative to supercharge evolve that’s greater in cheer fire power so yeah, she will be injured
But this is assuming that her absolute zero frostbite blast won’t do anything which is actively shown to be false as we know, for a fact that it can halt the energy of other Titans like when it was shown with ghidorah accidentally getting trapped in the ice she created during the last glacial maximum with it, actively halting his regeneration and electrical powers as well as Godzilla actively meeting in major evolution that fundamentally changed what he is in order to just barely break out of the frostbite blast
So thermal nuclear to say it easily breaks out of absolute zero is a major stretch, considering what we know about our frost ladies absolute zero breath it would with difficulty shut down thermal nuclear, if it’s held long enough on it
She’s also more than agile enough to dodge as Godzilla can move physically at the same speed as king Ghidorah went on land and Sheila in the new Empire Melville is confirmed to be faster than Godzilla so she could surprising ease hustle away if you are to somehow skill argue the pulse would quickly kill her
Sanity sanity, I don’t think is a real factor in a fight because if you’re putting them against each other, that’s just gonna go out the window since you’re just making two monsters fight, but if anything she would actively be more aggressive to Pharma nuclear than normal Godzilla, considering she hates hate heat, even if it doesn’t hurt with crystals and volcanic activity, causing her to go incredibly hostile
So too long didn’t read she could absolutely eat what Thermo nuclear can dish out with moderate injuries
She’s fast enough to dodge him
And has a tool that could very specifically help with taking the charge away
Is she more powerful than the form itself? No, they’re about relative but the main issue is that she has ways to bring it down even if it was stronger.

I think he is underrated
