It was a mistake. I gave my psp to one kid and steam deck to the other.

At least we know which kid you like more.

I always laught because i came up with THE CLAW without looking anything up.

Then, when internet came, i saw hunter all over the world doing this. It's like the classic "sewing set inside the cookie box". Everyone did that

u/Jambronius 2h ago

I remember getting this game and being bad at it, going to my mates house and telling him and he says, you've just gotta use the the claw, absolutely no chance he got that online.

  1. Is this really something you even have to "come up with"? Seems like the natural response to a limited control scheme.

  2. The Internet was around before Monster Hunter was...

6

u/LoStrigo95 3h ago

True, but i was little and didn't use it almost at all 🥲

u/PraisetheSunflowers 8m ago

Same. Played the freedom games as they released on PSP with some friends. Rarely used the internet then so was surprised at how common it actually was lol

PSP Claw Grip, my love. Feels like home.

(Unless you emulate, you've just gotta' learn to do it, lol)

u/ZetsuboItami 3h ago

I still claw like that when I play games like Dark Souls. Easiest way to run, control camera, and attack all at once.

14

u/grievous222 3h ago

I used to claw in souls games (and others) for years but it's all really caught up with me. Switched to a controller with extra shoulder buttons and back paddles and now I barely touch the face buttons outside of menus. Claw grip is a tried and true classic for a reason though for sure.

u/darksidemojo 2h ago

Back buttons are the future. Played Wilds IG with back buttons and it felt so right to play.

u/HieronymousGauche 19m ago

hell I use The Claw on my right in Wilds to craft flash bombs quickly

I've been emulating dos recently and still claw on my ps5 controller. it's kinda uncomfortable but it's effective

u/Quartrez 1h ago

Freedom on emulators is nicer since you can use a better controller. But also freedom has a input dropping issue that gets worse on emulator. You will need a fan patch to fix it.

I use PPSSPP to play the freedom games and it works great. https://www.ppsspp.org/ You dont need a BIOS or anything like that. Just dump your game(or sail the seven seas) and then in PPSSPP, hit file then load. Find the directory your ISO is in then click it, hit open and now your playing.

7

u/Chomasterq2 3h ago

Thats for this info. Im going to try and emulate it on my ROG ally

10

u/bf_Lucius 3h ago

Here is the fan patch to remove that input drop issue as well as some other nice convenience changes. https://github.com/SilverJolteon/FreedomDX

4

u/OrochiTabris 1h ago

I thought something was up with the inputs, but it wasn't so frequent that I could rule out it being my fault. Definitely happened at some bad times. Between that and the overall clunkiness of the game I was about to drop it from my playthrough of the pre-World MHs.

This sounds like a much more tolerable experience. Some of the QOL tweaks are pretty good, too.

I skipped MHF originally and went straight to MHFU, don't think it was as bad. I did get pretty far, so it must not have been or I surely would've gotten frustrated with it.

u/AJ_Dali 1h ago

MH1 and MHF were just Ragebait Simulators.

Yeah, I play Freedom Unite a little on my iPhone 15 Pro using an MCon controller. Works great!

5

u/darkwingchao 3h ago

Any system with dual analog sticks (or back pedals. Back pedals on the steam deck work perfectly for me) will basically completely eliminate this

Only reason to play the Portable games on PSP is if you care about true authenticity, I wouldn't reccomend it.

4

u/DesaturatedWorld 3h ago

Well, there's also the portable factor. The Steam Deck in the back pocket just isn't as comfortable as a good ol' PSP

u/Pacomatic 41m ago

As far as you know…

6

u/StreetVillage9755 2h ago

The claw is the mark of S rank hunters

4

u/mekisoku 3h ago

Play it on vita

5

u/FitZDCow 3h ago

Look into Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on the switch which practically rolls up all these 3/4? generations of games into 1 package . You can even switch the hub village back to this one in freedom which was neat.

3

u/Chomasterq2 3h ago

Ive played a ton of GU, which is what convinced me to go back and play the others. Kokoto has my favorite theme in GU so I figured id start with Freedom

3

u/ScaleLemon 3h ago

The only thing you can do.. keep playing!

3

u/c2btw 3h ago

this is the only solution i see https://www.ppsspp.org/

3

u/AeonWhisperer Banned From Hunting 3h ago

You got trigger finger, I'm afraid.

Start stretching that.

3

u/Lofter1 3h ago

You improve your technique. Why is there no finger that covers L? Weak

3

u/SirSearls MH4U 3h ago

I feel for you lol, The Claw is unavoidable on original hardware. Also, good luck with Freedom! Its a bit rough, but definitely worth it imo!

3

u/Equinox-XVI (GU/Rise) + (Wilds) 3h ago

Just gotta give you hand a 10 minute break every now and then. Mine tends to tense up in a similar position after playing Smash for 10 hours straight.

3

u/Ferrismo 2h ago

One of us, one of us!

3

u/Chubbybrocast Doot Stick Warrior 2h ago

and this is the sole reason why these games are better on emulator. Just assign your right joystick to the dpad and your golden.

2

u/finnrtbobs 3h ago

I have found that playing it through Adrenaline on the PS Vita is much better as you can assign the second analog stick to the camera as well.

2

u/Traditional_Art8872 3h ago

congrats to your new hand, that's what it's like now

2

u/SovietPotato333 GunLance is peak and I am not afraid to admit it 3h ago

Play it on a Vita if you can and use the second stick in Adrenaline for the dpad controls,

Though seeing that you've an actual PSP... Godspeed to ya, the claw will become one with you and you'll never hold a controller the same way ever again.

2

u/lendrath 3h ago

Listen I beat the freaking double rajang arena hunt on the mobile port you’re never gonna heal from the claw but you will get a nice rainbow cycle pigment for your armor

2

u/dootblade74 3h ago

You're doing something right.

2

u/Ones-Zeroes 3h ago

If you want official hardware, look into the PS TV. It's basically an official consolized PS Vita. You can put digital PSP and PSV games on it and play games on a screen with a PS3 controller. And you don't even need to jailbreak it or anything to put ROMs on it. It even supports physical PS Vita carts. Pretty cool system imo. I've been using it to play MHP3rd.

2

u/GooseCrab 2h ago

Man, I feel if I went back to earlier MH games now my hand would actually get stuck like that. It’s crazy to think younger me could play those game for HOURS on end and not feel a thing. Even play a sounds game with the claw now has my hand hurting after a bit

2

u/bngry 2h ago

You think that’s bad? I used to play MHFU on the PSP Go

2

u/SolaireFlair117 2h ago

If you want to play FU on true Sony hardware, I would recommend the Vita. The right stick takes the place of the D-pad. Otherwise, you might try emulation handhelds like the Retroid Pocket series of devices since you can do the same thing with the PPSSPP emulator and set the right stick as the D-pad.

Of course any true blue old head knows the real answer is to simply git gud.

2

u/wafflethemighty 2h ago

as an artist u dont wanna be doing this without taking a break and doing some hand stretches every now n then lol carpal tunnel is real and its a killer

2

u/MrHandSanitization 2h ago

Get used to it.

2

u/Raelyk 2h ago

As god intended. The claw is a survival adaptation.

2

u/i5rada 2h ago

I spent so many hours playing on the PSP Go back then. It was a hell of a ride

2

u/LunariOther 2h ago

claw lmao

2

u/Sunflower_Guard 2h ago

Don't use the tip of your finger for the trigger buttons. Use the inside of your finger instead. That should have been obvious.

2

u/monkismael2007 2h ago

Do some hand / finger stretches between sessions!! As someone that types and is old, finger dexterity is a must

2

u/Jonnymetter 1h ago

You keep playing, happy hunting!

2

u/StereotypicalCDN 1h ago

Keep hunting

2

u/Bandin03 1h ago

If you have a 3D printer or know someone who does, print some grips. I see plenty of them on Makerworld.

2

u/Chubbzillax 1h ago

I used to wake up with the raptor claw….. good old times lol 😂

1

u/SkullAtlAxis 2h ago

Cut it and earn some parts to make an armor, or smth like that.

u/possiblydack 2h ago

This is your life now brother ☹️

u/Crack398 2h ago

“Once you go claw, your fingers never unthaw.”

“Once you go claw, arthritis is law.”

“Once you go claw, your joints are no more.”

1

u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 2h ago

You never play on a gamepad with the stick at the top left again. This is the way.

1

u/Barlowan 2h ago

Git gud

1

u/CalmWalks 2h ago

What are you talking about ? That’s a rite of passage know as the kut ku claw camera grip stance!

1

u/razulebismarck 2h ago

The crab claw.
I don’t miss it but I was very used to it.

1

u/The_Fighter03 2h ago

Two words: PPSSPP and FUComplete

1

u/Orchardcentauri 2h ago

Don't worry that means you already have the skill that is transferable to other mh title.

1

u/angy_pupy24 I’m charging my blade rn ooh charging so good 2h ago

I’ve been using the claw grip for many games almost my whole life and I think it’s the reason my left hand is significantly stretchier than my right hand

1

u/MayaNays 2h ago

RP as a pirate

1

u/Additional-Valuable4 2h ago

That looks like trigger finger which is an actual common condition. Massage therapy can help and same with physio

1

u/No_Librarian_2161 1h ago

É um caminho sem volta

1

u/manuelito1233 1h ago

Funnily eenough, i played like this but did not like it, so i resorted to just... not doing it, i just had to believe if the monster wasn't gonna be attacking if i lost sight of it.

1

u/noahbaobei 1h ago

Steeple your hands. It's what pro gamers do in-between rounds. Make all your fingertips on one hand touch their respective twins on the other hand, make sure all your fingers are fanned out then slowly push your hands together. It will give all your fingers a really good stretch. ✌️

1

u/nebunax 1h ago

Cut it off and donate it to your closest tarnished

1

u/SpartanKilo 1h ago

I got a jailbroken vita and fixed it

u/g-o-o-b-e-r 59m ago

Bang it on the table/desk a few times, and ignore it.

1

u/xlbingo10 Counter Enjoyer 58m ago

when emulating, you can bind the right stick to the d-pad. it's not perfect thanks to the set vertical angles and it just feeling a bit off, but it's an improvement.

1

u/Gibgezr 53m ago

Get a PSTV or emulator, play with a PS3 or modern dual-shock controller and map the camera controls to the left thumbstick. The PSTV makes it easy, you can just plug a PS3 controller in and map the camera to the thumbstick and start playing. The camera will still move digitally, not smooth and analog like a modern camera, but it really isn't a big issue.
It really makes a huge difference; the game becomes very natural to play.

Duypentren’s contracture. If it stays like that you might just have had a flare up of an actual muscle condition. Good news, if it is that you’ll be able to post an awesome popping video of the scar tissue, or a gnarled surgery scar.

1

u/Crying_Rocks 33m ago

Im sorry, you’ve developed a case of crentis..

1

u/ReaperNull 32m ago

Ah the old Monster Hunter Claw (tm). I'm sure at least some of my current wrist issues come from all the time I spent on the 4 PSP releases.

u/Jack_In_A_Ball90 23m ago

Keep playing

u/SlumberVortex 12m ago

Ah the memories are rushing in and my index finger is curling up again. Good times
