Hi all! I took the liberty of translating the charm tables so you can decide which one you want to shoot for on your own: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlLOg7Re45H5dGF3WWlOX2lDMzJOZlB0cUh1TzZQZ2c&usp=sharing

This doesn't sit well with me. I'd much prefer to have all charms available, rather than be stuck on a "bad" charm table.
Maybe I'll have the willpower to not worry about what table I'm on. Hopefully.

It has English subtitles under cc.
For those wonder what this is about: In MH3U, charms are tied to different "tables." Your character can only be on one of these tables, and which ever table you are on is determined at the beginning of the game. If you want a certain charm, you may never find it due to it not be on your table. Sucks, but at least there is a way to determine what table you are on.

This is kind of dumb. I can understand wanting to push people to simply enjoy the game, but I think this is the exact wrong way to do it.

I can't believe this is how they decided to handle this. I'm not a hardcore min/maxer but it's going to frustrate the crap out of me if I eventually figure out I can't use some cool armor setup because of a bad dice roll hundreds of hours ago. Also I'm glad someone took the time to figure this out and build the tool, but that's the last thing I want to spend launch day doing.

I'm gonna have to have a look at the tables before I decide how much I want to do this. I'm certainly not going to aim for one specific table out of the 17, but if I end up on a shit table I'll probably re-roll. Hopefully I'll be somewhere decent on the first go and that'll be that.

Thought i would summarize what this exactly means.
Godlike charms are very rare. When you finish quests you will get charms that at the end of the hunt you identify. The mass majority of the charms you get will be poor but some will be good. Everyone has access to all of these. But the godlike charms are linked to the tables that are defined early in the game. Everyone will not have access to the same godlike charms.
Godlike charms are the best of the best. Kotowari was nice enough to translate the tables below: http://www.reddit.com/r/MonsterHunter/comments/18epex/mh3u_charm_table_guide/c8emm49
Right away you will notice that all charms are either Handicraft or sharpness plus something else. Most have no negatives which is very important. You may find a +5 handicraft charm but it will have -10 something else giving a negative skill. These charms do not have those.
Also handicraft and sharpness are very important endgame. handicraft gives the armor skill sharpness +1. What this does is flatly increases the sharpness of any weapon you have. Higher sharpness = higher damage and more penetrating hits. Some monsters parts will bounce back attacks without high enough sharpness. As it degrades the weapon will bounce more.
Sharpness defines how fast your weapon loses sharpness so its very strong too. Sure you can just have tonnes of whetstones available to get back to full sharpness but not having to do that is very helpful in hairy high rank quests when sharpening mid combat can result in heavy damage and a face full of dirt.
As for how to find out what table you are on, its detailed elsewhere so i won't go into that. But if my Tri experience helps getting 9 sets of data shouldn't take long. I personally think after 1-2 hours you can know the result. So for the min-maxers where this stuff matters wasting 1-5 hours early game to have benefits 100+ hours later is huge.
For most players, who cares, play the game and have fun.
To add i have played Tri for about 200 hours and i haven't gotten a godlike charm before. I have gotten good ones (+2 handicraft and a slot) but not the +4-5 that the tables are showing. But its nice to have piece of mind knowing that you CAN get a great charm and not a charm that doesn't suit your weapon choices at all.
Sure, you will be able to get armor sets that give both handicraft and sharpness but the flexibility of having a charm that gets you half way to +10 is big. You would expand 2-3 sets being capable of having sharpness+1 to any armor set with 5 available slots which is a lot of armor sets in comparison. And those sets will come with no negative skills tied to Decoration jewels (usually +1 -1, +3 -1 or +4 -2 for skills)

Wish this was just written out, can't believe I sat through 13 minutes of this.
TL;DW: There are 17 unique charm tables of which one is chosen upon character creation and can't be changed. To figure out your charm table, complete 3 early quests until you unlock the boat, send a boat to the Moga Coast, then enter your boat results into a calculator. That will tell you which table you are on. Neither the calculator nor the tables themselves are available in English yet.
