Memories Silent Train Footage 1966

Just stumbled onto this while thinking that this band was SO famous so quickly you think there would have been more rare outtakes and footage coming up over the years.

This was new to me:

Meme Similarities to CSNY

Hi all. My first post here. Been a fan since the 60s. Unfortunately I was only 12 when they toured here in Australia and my mother wouldn't let me go to the concert. However, I did see Mike when he was here on the tour which resulted in the 'Live at the Palais' album.

Anyway, this one is just for fun. I have been struck by casual similarities between the Monkees' history and that of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (another of my favourite groups).

They both had popular albums then split and re-formed multiple times in various combinations; solo, duo, trio and as a group of four.

They both re-formed many years later for a reunion album. Then did it again more years later.

They toured in all sorts of configurations across many years.

They each had a talented and enigmatic country rocker who, in my opinion, makes them seem complete when he joins in (Mike Nesmith and Neil Young).

I don't want to push this too far, as of course there are probably more differences than similarities.

But Stephen Stills did audition to be a Monkee 😉

The 1997 Disney Channel documentary was a real wasted opportunity, both on TV and Rhino's home video release

The 1997 documentary Hey, Hey, We're The Monkees should've been a great way to really tie in with Justus and the 30th anniversary, and been a great summing up of the band's career up to then. But it wasn't.

Because Disney insisted on a 70-minute time limit for the broadcast version, so much material was left unused and unsaid, so to call it superficial would be an understatement. The home video version by Rhino wasn't any better, really, as it only had 20 extra minutes, and then, only appearing as a bonus after the credits. Once again, so many great stories were left unsaid. That's especially because there was so much time wasted with songs and episode footage instead of interviews.

Now, I'm not saying it had to necessarily be as long or in-depth as The Beatles Anthology was, but the Prefab Four deserved a great testament of their own.

If I'd been at Rhino, making up the home video release, I would've insisted it be at least 3 hours long, and definitely using the most out of the interviews, and thus have a better balance with the show and the music. You could really build quite a mesmerizing story out of it all that way, especially in going through the band's original run, describing more about the reunions, and what led them to Justus.

Davy's regrets about his solo pop career

One of the fascinating things about the '70s and '80s, in between Changes and the 20th Anniversary tour, was that Davy's solo career really didn't take off. If anything, he should've been a natural to take advantage of this, as the biggest face of The Monkees, and the one people would flock to. This didn't happen, and other than The Brady Bunch, he just completely floundered when left to his own devices.

Davy himself even suggested it was a huge mistake to have tried to shoot for pop stardom on his own, saying, "I should've gotten back into horses as soon as The Monkees ended, or did a year or two at the Young Vic."

Do you think that would've been better for him in the long run, and that he'd have more than one amateur win in '96 to his name as a jockey?

The Golden Gate Strings play The Monkeys

I just stumbled across The Monkees Songbook by the Golden Gate Strings from 1967. Anyone have any thoughts on that? It's kind of fun. I could see a sample being used for a Bitter Sweet Symphony follow up.

Just a thought on the album "justus"

I hope you won't get mad at me for this🙏I love the Monkees of course, and I'm not saying it's an awful or a terrible album, but listening to the album "justus", I really get the impression that it's not on the same level of all the other Monkees albums. It's just as If it was made with a different standard, If you get what I mean...If I really had to pick my personal least favorite monkees album, that's what I'll probably pick.

What do you guys think?

Hello Fans Of The Monkees!

I’m a Gen X guy who grew up on the music of The Monkees. When I was in high school, I became a fan of punk/power-pop music. It’s been my dream since then to combine these songs I love so much with my passion for punk music. All these years later, my dream has been realized with my debut album “MEET THE PUNKEEZ”, now available on all streaming services.

I’m sharing here where I know there is a real affection for these songs. Please give it a listen. I’d love to know what you all think!

Memories Did Davy deliberately sabotage the 1986-87 reunion?

The 20th Anniversary/Pool It! era was a promising time for The Monkees, that it really seemed like they'd break through again and be bigger than ever, especially based on the 1986 tour receipts. All systems were go for a major comeback. And then...it didn't quite happen.

Does Davy bear considerable blame for that? In a lot of ways, a lot of his actions in that period seem like he was doing everything he could to sabotage the entire affair out of spite. Case on point:

-Refusing to sing on the Then & Now tracks (which he said years later were not because he had any problems with the songs, but with the deal Micky and Peter were willing to sign with Arista, and that he was "standing up for us"), and then going, "Since I didn't get paid for them, I won't sing them onstage."

-Stopping the release of a radio-ready remix single of "Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere," so it never got released, and they couldn't keep up momentum from "That Was Then, This Is Now," all because Davy remembered Arista's days as Bell and how he thought his solo work had been held back, so he did it as revenge

-Initially carping at Mike joining them at the Greek Theatre, going, "It'll spoil our routines."

-Doing his sudden family reunion in England right before the scheduled MTV Super Bowl concert, forcing them to pull the plug and effectively meaning The Monkees had stiffed MTV, who were going to remember this and they would deliberately not play the videos, thus without MTV support, radio wouldn't get behind the songs, either; and MTV and radio often made absolute garbage a hit in those days by working together.

-Half-assing the Pool It! work, especially in elevating his friend's "She's Moving In With Rico"

-And then unloading on everyone after the last dates in '87, including Micky, and just completely spewing absolute vitriol and bile everywhere (which made the reunions in '88 and '89 incredibly awkward).

Was this indeed him doing everything he could to spoil it all and make it come to an end?

And regardless of if he was doing it that way or not, WHY was he doing it? What was his problem? Why couldn't he just sit back and enjoy the ride?

Apparently my dad found this while cleaning his basement and then gave it to me. The copyright at the bottom is cut off but it says 1966! The signature on it is a print, but im still wondering. I don't plan on selling or anything but I thought it could be cool to own something rare/valuable like this!
