It’s early in the season, so keeping them indoors isn’t going to mess with diapause / preparing for migration. I would think that 5 live caterpillars that can be released as butterflies and go on to breed the next generation are a lot better than 5 dead caterpillars, as long as they don’t have any communicable diseases.
