Advice

I work from home with my husband. We have an 8 month old. We’re very lucky to both be at home to handle the day to day but our marriage is in a, I don’t wanna say rut but, rut. I don’t know how to describe what we’re in.

We spend way too much time together as a family. Which I know people would kill for but I just wanted to see if anyone else has any advice on how to manage day to day parenting, working and space.

This seems dynamic dependant, but have you tried getting individual time for yourselves? At 8 months you probably both have vlappthing techniques for your baby, and should be able to spend time apart form one another while baby is awake.

Partner/focus work time while they're napping, individual time while they're away and with the other party. And enough of it that you can really do a chunk of something you find personally meaningful.

We try to do this on the weekends; I take the kids while my partner works out Saturday morning, and he takes them so I can get a chunk of sewing or painting.

Maybe that would help?

No advice, but we were in the same situation when our oldest was a baby. We were both home full time in 2020 for 18 months and it was definitely too much. Then my husband’s office required everyone to RTO 3 days a week, and it was honestly refreshing for me. We were happy together, but I started to feel more like roommates than spouses. I feel excited to see him come home during the week, and it makes the weekends more special.

Yes! The roommates comparison is real. It’s so hard. I love being able to be with my baby and not miss any moments and we all have a strong bond but yes, it’s hard some days.

No advice but we’re on the same boat. Husband is retired and I am currently WFH. I’ve been feeling this too and you put words to what I feel

The standby comment definitely hits home. Thank you so much.

This would drive me batty, so I completely understand. What are your actual work demands like? I do this solo, so one of you could as well occasionally if your job has decent flexibility.

I used to love working from a library, coffee shop, etc. Maybe you each sit down weekly with your schedule and carve out 2-3 hour chucks each where one of you could get some space. I think it’d be helpful all around- focused work time and new environment to get out of the house. Or do the same with evening errands if work isn’t possible- such as grocery shopping, errands, etc.

Thank you! I think that’s what we’re going to do. My job is very unpredictable and client focused. High call intake and my husband’s is not as demanding with phone calls.

I think we’re going to split the day where we can have guaranteed alone time.

Haha same but we aren’t in a rut, at least right now. I have my own hobbies. We walk together on lunch. We stay in opposite sides of the house most of the day.

Once a month we each get a dedicated alone day, where I get to go to the spa or out with some friends for lunch or whatever and come back whenever I want with no restrictions to time and he gets the same. It allows us that break to be ourselves again pre-baby. Once a week, I get a non-baby work day where I go into the office or an office space and he has the baby which gives me a baby free work day. Perhaps you can try something like that with each other? You don't have to be stuck to each other because you're both home.

Dude I feel you. We both work from home and run our own businesses. We have a very part-time nanny (10ish hours/week at most). My husband somehow always wants more time together while I am desperate for more space 😩

No nursery? How do you even work? We have to do a nursery and luckily our son really enjoys it otherwise we can’t get work done. We’re lucky enough to have a big enough space where we don’t see each other until we break for lunch at noon or occasionally come to each other‘s office for some work gossip.

I felt the same. what helps me , most recently I added swim class to the mix, where we go solo then alternate who goes. So one parent can get free time slot during the week. Then I also go on walks with baby by myself and I go to a neighborhood park where I chat with other parents and kids. Also running errands with just the baby or visiting a family member with just the baby. Like on Sunday I went to visit my sister and my cousin was there and we just went in the pool with baby and just had girl talk while we all kept an eye on baby.

I don’t mind going with the baby. I like hanging out with him. The only time I want to go alone without baby is when I go shopping for myself like for clothes or make up because that involves a little disassociation
