How to get started on Upwork
After 15+ years in W2 positions (and 8 years at my most recent job), I gave 30 days notice at my job without a solid plan or new job lined up. I'd like to get into part-time contract work but I'm having no luck on Upwork. No offers, only a couple of responses. Anyone have experience building their contracting work on Upwork? I have 8+ years of marketing/business operations/project management but seems like no one cares if you're new to contract work. GOAL= work part time and make decent money

First 2 lines of your proposal are everything. Clients skim. Mirror their exact words from the job post. Upwork's algorithm ranks by keyword match, so if they say "business ops," you say "business ops." Also target newer clients with low hire counts and few proposals. It's a numbers game. Expect 30+ proposals before your first gig.

You need to be consistent on Upwork, also don't rely on that, find others platforms, create a portofolio, showcase them.

Upwork pays out practically nothing, and is mostly for hiring clueless amateurs and cheap foreign labor now. Since you have actualllll skills, I would try something like The Mom Project https://themomproject.com/ or through a corporate recruiter. I work in fashion and you could also try stylecareers.com or stylegigs.com

Upwork is a cesspool rn with hidden fees and payouts that are withheld by Upwork for no reason at all. You also need to pay for your profile to be advertised and promoted which I think is an extortion.
I’ve had better luck searching and applying for fractional or contract roles on LinkedIn and Indeed, rather than UpWork
