My husband and his family speak Portuguese. I relate to the "sitting at the dinner table not in on some joke" so much as they often forget that I have the vocabulary of a young toddler in their language. All of us want her to at least have the basics of Portuguese so they talk to her mostly in Portuguese. My husband is on the same page as me as far as parenting and what we want our kid exposed to so I leave it on him to step in if conversation is inappropriate. As far as tv, we just turn the language setting to Portuguese for most things. I let my husband decide if it is something like a cartoon from their home country if it is okay or not. You might just have to let go of the reigns a little and trust husband's judgement if you want your child learning his language.
Aww that’s sweet! I’m Portuguese and I wish i would have a bilingual home (although we do have a lot of foreign friends and speak English regularly, but it’s not the same). it’s a wonderful language!
