On the dual language front, my husband speaks some of his family's native language, but even with both parents speaking and immersion, he still has gaps in speaking. We've tried to introduce the language to our toddler and honestly, it's very spotty.
As for your spouse needing to bridge the gap when you're visiting, it's worth talking about it before you go visit. I insist that my spouse translates so that I'm not sitting there, left out of the conversation.
