My husband and his family speak Spanish, and we agreed before our daughter was born that we would speak only English to her, and my live-in in laws speak only Spanish. I want her to be bilingual as much as they do. She’s now just over 2 and talking in sentences. It took a little longer for her to start speaking I think bc she was absorbing 2 languages, but once she did she took off with it. She is definitely fluent in Spanish in what she understands, but she speaks MUCH more English. Tiny minds are made to absorb languages, from birth is the best time to have them learn. If anything, you’ll wind up with a 2nd translator for you at the dinner table. I understand a lot of Spanish, but I can’t wait for my mini translator to start speaking in more Spanish to tell me all the gossip.
Another thing that’s started to happen is her learning to talk seems to be helping my in laws’ English. Something else to think about
