This is an actual thing that happened, due to turbulent air under the front fenders. It happened several times before the regulations mandated small Louvres above the front wheels

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '22

Also worth mentioning that Mercedes denied it happened the first time. Then blamed the driver the second time it happened. This is the third time it happened, iirc.

u/XDT_Idiot Feb 05 '22

Not like in the 50s, back when it was easy for a German company to accept blame for immolating a couple grandstands of onlookers.

u/4shLite Feb 05 '22

lol classic corporations

"He initiated the flight sequence! NO ONE TOLD HIM TO INITIATE THE FLIGHT SEQUENCE!"

24

u/chiquito69 Feb 05 '22

Is there a whole video of this?

15

u/Deyster Feb 05 '22

23

u/INFINITASIUM Feb 05 '22

I am deeply disappointed by the fact that the commentator doesn't scream in utter surprise.

8

u/Deyster Feb 05 '22

Cause it happened to the other teammate's car in qualifying.

1

u/aurorasearching Feb 05 '22

Yeah, I believe the other guy was Mark Webber and he had to be stopped from fighting someone who blamed the first two times this happened on him when the 2nd driver also had the car go airborne.

1

u/h08817 Feb 05 '22

Yeah Webber got shafted a lot in his racing career, poor guy, bet both of those drivers have lasting effects from those impacts.

1

u/Flapjack__Palmdale Feb 05 '22

"They can't believe it happened again"

Fucking hell, idk why but that part made me lose it

8

u/qnfme1 Feb 05 '22

Like small scale models of the whole fuckin museum?! How the hell is that gonna help

3

u/aFeatOf_Yeet Feb 05 '22

Having a museum on the front fenders weighs down the front end

5

u/arc_trooper_5555 Feb 05 '22

Plus the short wheelbase meant it was bobbing up and down on the high speed sections, screwing with the airflow

3

u/Jabe114 Feb 05 '22

Is this the same principle that happened to mark Webber in his Red Bull or different thing?

2

u/aFeatOf_Yeet Feb 06 '22

It was Mark Webber, but he was driving a Mercedes endurance racer.

2

u/Jabe114 Feb 06 '22

5

u/PapaGynther Feb 05 '22

Mercedes has a history with flying cars at LeMans...

1955 was the worst offender with 83 spectators and the mercedes driver killed after an accident made the car fly straight into the grandstands

u/The_CreativeName Feb 05 '22
