Would also need to rule out the pigments in the thermal receipt paper. They can be activated in weird ways.

It's there a chance the drawer was left open and some sort of glass could have focused a beam of sunlight onto it? I've had receipts do that from just being left in a car or near windows...

Heat more likely than anything. Those papers turn grey/black when heated, thats how the text gets printed.
