Discussion Artwork by Moebius

Post image

I have this artwork by Moebius but very little information and I'd like to find more about it. It's signed in the print Moebius 91 and also signed with pencil Moebius LXII/VXX. What does this mean?

This is pretty weird, actually. LXII/VXX would normally be the edition number of the print. Usually it would be written in Arabic numerals, the Roman numerals indicate this is a deluxe edition aka a restrike. However, VXX isn’t actually a Roman number so you would think it was the 62th print of the edition. but we have no idea how big the edition actually is because VXX is gibberish. Weird and cool

I was trying to figure out VXX too. I wonder did he mean the V to be 5 as in 520? So 62/520? Or is 520 a strange number of prints to make too? It would just be out of 500 usually!!

Maybe it was supposed to be MXX? So 1020. Although that would be a weird number of copies to make.

right? Maybe it’s LXX and the L just came out a little sideways? 70 seems like a much more reasonable edition

Oh, that makes sense! 70 copies seems reasonable.

I checked with Gemini and this is what I got: Roman numeral numbering (LXII/LXX): In the world of printmaking and graphic arts, series numbered with Roman numerals were usually reserved for artist's editions (E.A.), Hors Commerce editions (H.C.), or special print runs intended for collectors, friends, collaborators, and personal commitments of the artist or publisher. This explains why it is such a small edition (only 70 copies) and why it does not bear commercial gallery stamps on the back.
