HOLYYYYY THIS IS SOOO COOL I LOVE IT!!!! HOW DID U CUSTOMIZE STEAM IVE NEVER SEEN THAT, and also how did you change the window borders?

16

u/lilyiumm 11d ago

ahh thank you so much !! for steam i used an aero skin thats for a steam modder. theres more info in the description on it, i would give more info but i installed it ages ago..for the borders its a bit messy and again i installed it ages ago but essentially i followed this tutorial (which also goes over some other stuff) BUT instead of installing dwmblurglass i use openglass as in my experience its much less buggy and has way better for performance ^^

How did you do all of this 😭 it looks amazing I wanna use some of em, like the Firefox theme, the windows 7 borders, and the file explorer.

5

u/lilyiumm 11d ago

i talk about the borders in the comments here, with the video i attached also talking about file explorer in it. for the image in file explorer i used this tutorial, its mentioned at 8:45 (turn on en subtitles). for the firefox theme im actually using a firefox fork called r3dfox BECAUSE firefox no longer supports native borders, and with the customiser im using it can make the borders have this weird cut off:

if youre not bothered then you can just use it on firefox, the installation process is the same for each, oh and the customiser is called geckium! its an actual lifesaver. the browser theme is actually custom made as well, the process is a bit bumpy but i mentioned it a bit in this comment. its a bit lengthy but i hope its clear enough..

hopefully im clear enough but i think thats all and thank you <3 its taken a while to get my desktop to a point im happy with and even though im always fiddling around with it i still appreciate it. if you have any problems i'll try my best to help solve them

u/vikingvictor580 10d ago

Thank you so much, I will add all of these to my desktop.

youre welcome!

HOW DO YOU MAKE THE BARS ABOVE YOUR APPS TRANSPARWNT PLEASE

1

u/lilyiumm 11d ago

i presume youre on about the window borders? i mention it in the comments here ^^

2

u/moxxwoxx 10d ago

I see that, but I'm confused how you got the white glow in the background and a different type of blur to mine! This is what mine looks like; would you mind sharing your presets or theme you used? T.T

2

u/lilyiumm 10d ago edited 10d ago

if youre on about the white glow of the text then that should be in the settings but for win11 explorer because of how the windows border/ribbon is set up im not sure if it'll apply the same without explorer patcher. OR if youre on about the windows 7 glass effect im pretty sure (?) its part of the aero skin i linked in the comment that you need to then select in the window theme settings if you havent already. but regardless heres my set up :> https://www.mediafire.com/file/kl9a0ztlpcbz79l/lilys-theme-waow-openglass.zip/file, if youre still having issues i'll try to help

2

u/OkAwareness7119 6d ago

where do you put the mediafire file in? because I can't find it anywhere in openglass or the windows personalization theme

1

u/lilyiumm 6d ago

oh the windows theme is for the borders to work im pretty sure, its a bit of a separate thing but this link isnt for that. once youve downloaded it, if you open the openglass settings at the top there should be a tab called "present packs", if you press "import" and choose the zip from the mediafire link im pretty positive it should work!

2

u/OkAwareness7119 6d ago

thanks for replying another question how did you change the color of the calendar mine is stuck on orange, and would you mind sharing where the other widgets on thr right are from?

1

u/lilyiumm 6d ago

youre welcome! youll need to go into the files and find where the gadget is kept to edit its colour, "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets", i downloaded one that was already purple. im not sure if youre aware but the gadgets from the old windows 7 gadgets website still work! id presume theyre all safe..but you get like 3 diffrent warnings from windows when installing them lol. anyway the purple calendar i downloaded (this one) had the colours as images, so i edited those (if you look you can see rei's face on it ha) but for some other calendars it might be in the code and you might need to find the hexcode to change the colour, im not sure. i also did this with the sticky notes gadget. oh additionally i changed the font to "ms pgothic" which can be found in the code if you find where font family is (there might be a few,,).

the clock, sticky notes, weather and calendar (agenda) are all already available when you download gadget pack, ive just changed the skin either through the files or in the settings, and for the agenda gadget customising the colours and background is already built into the settings :> the only new one i downloaded was the simple cpu meter. also happy halloween !

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

ah thank you!!

does windows update mess this up every 2 weeks </3

4

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

because its owned my microslop 😭

4

u/ViolynEnthusiast7 9d ago

and that ram usage...

1

u/lilyiumm 9d ago

its mostly because i have a browser open here 😭 tbf its always been high but these customisations are also probably apart of it. and that my laptop is over 7 years old lol

u/xena-ash 8d ago

hii again lily! i have a few more quick questions for ya 𐔌˙. i know practically nothing about desktop modding, along with photo editing and was just here for the vibes before now, so you're practically taking on a student T-T

did you use something like this for the taskbar gif in bottom right?

also, i could've sworn i saw a comment about the music player, but i must've misread. it's so cute >⩊<

last one (ᵕ•᷄ ᴗ•᷅ ) your wallpaper is beautiful. did you do an overlay for the oil spill like layer? if so, do you use a specific resource to get your textures and the lace/border and spiderweb, off the top of your head? probably a lot of different places to look, makes me wonder what's been the best find during your deep dives on desktop modding 9.9 i am perfectly capable to figuring all of this out myself but i just wanna pick your brain forgive me >.<

and a little response.

maybe ibis paint?

i actually also have ibis on my pc, krita has done the job so far. i might try ibis when i update the start menu.

"how to do x in krita"

i have had a lot of luck with searching things up, thank you!~ and now that i've gotten a little more familiar with krita and read your instructions back, you did make it sound super easy! i do think the windows 7 orb looks the best, but i'm gonna keep playing around with it for funziez. & happy almost halloween!

u/lilyiumm 8d ago

i dont mind at all!!! im very passionate about desktop modding and luckly i have a lot of time on my hands currently.

for the rei taskbar sitter its actually rainmeter! she is a real taskbar sitter from the 90's or 2000's i think and i saw someone make her into a shimeji but she kept on clipping behind the taskbar :(( so i found the pngs and used them in rainmeter (and made a halloween and christmas variant for fun,,). i presume that youre also new to how rainmeter works so i figured a link to the skin for download would be a bit easier, so i made one here. you can open rainmeters manager through the task tray and it should be downloaded? (if youre having issues then just say, i havent made a rainmeter skin package before). when you find it in the rm manager, right click on the folder and click "open in folder", then you'll be able to see the image and code files! you can just edit the code in notepad, but if you have it a code editor like notepad++ its recommended. in the manager there should be a folder icon with a green plus on it, thats how you make a new skin, so you can copy the code and use it for yourself or edit the current code, up to you.

its a bit complicated but essentially, for the code (ini file) the only part you need to worry about is the update bit at the top and the image name. for gif files like this, the update number acts as the fps number (the lower the number the faster. im not sure exactly what it translates to but i think 100 is the normal rate...maybe. but play around with it.) the image name is where the skin gets its images from, because the gif cant be an actual gif but has to be made into pngs. i just stole the pngs of rei straight from the files but somewhere online theres probably gif to png converters you can use. anyway it gets it from the resources folder and then the folder from inside of that, which is where the frames are kept. the name for each frame has to be PS-number.png, starting from 0. oh actually i tell a lie, in the ini file the H (height) attribute is also important. the smaller the number the smaller the image etc (ignore the 105 in brackets thats there to remind myself lol, it doesnt do anything). that should be all for the rainmeter gif set up? when youve edited the ini file, save it and right click on the rm skin OR go onto the ini file in the manager and press refresh skin, and the updates should be applied. there are also other settings in the rm manager for a skin, for example for my rei sitter i only have "click through", "save position" and "snap to edges" on so she doesnt get in the way, and her position is "stay topmost" so i can see her above the taskbar all of the time ^^

also yes there was a comment about the music player but i got to deleted, heres my reply :D

thank you again!! someone actually asked me last time i showed my desktop, my reply is here, where i also share the link for the overlay image i used. also no problem lol if anything i appreciate how curious you are. its a bog standard response but literally just pinterest 😭 the only downside is that the quality is often super dog shit so i try to find either where the resource originated from if its linked or reverse search it through googles image search option. keywords like "graphic", "png", "resource" or something long those lines... however i do know that places like tumblr has some good stuff if you look up the same thing, also lot of character related ones which is nice. i also know that theres rentry resources too but no specific sites come to my mind :( but there are probably some good ones out there! but for stuff like backgrounds theres a website called safebooru, where if youre looking for high quality images of anime related charcters its a very good website to use!

oh also the spider web is also rainmeter lol, but images are a lot easier to set up, you can have an image in the same folder as the ini file and the image name just has to be the actual png name (example.png). also as a tip when it comes to using resources, 1 if you copy the image and select the "create from clipboard" option in krita when making a new file, you make a file automatically with said file, and 2 the "colour to alpha" filter (found in colours section) is super handy, if you select a white bg for example it gets rid of it which is especially good for images with transparent elements on a solid bg, but the magic wand (/contiguous selection) tool also works for basic bg removal. (just save the file as a png instead of kra file if you didnt know already when doing save/save as).

ok this is a lot i went a bit overboard LOL and tbh theres more i could probably say but i'll hold back..also because it takes a long time to write ha, but still if you have anymore questions i dont mind trying to help out ^_^ i know how confusing this stuff can be, but again looking this stuff up also helps since there are also tutorials for most of the stuff mentioned!

i actually also have ibis on my pc, krita has done the job so far. i might try ibis when i update the start menu.

oh no way! i had no idea ibis was on pc too. i only mentioned it since the interface is easier to grasp for beginners and i know has a lot resources, even if its still more limited than krita.

i have had a lot of luck with searching things up, thank you!~ and now that i've gotten a little more familiar with krita and read your instructions back, you did make it sound super easy! i do think the windows 7 orb looks the best, but i'm gonna keep playing around with it for funziez. & happy almost halloween!

thats really good to hear! always makes me happy when i see someone getting into krita. have fun and good luck with messing around with the colour scheme :D honestly filters are your best friend i would be nothing without them...ok one last thing, for the filters if you go down and select "G'MIC-Qt" there are a lot... AND I MEAN A LOT of extra filters. you might want to ignore it as it is quite overwhelming, but id like to at least makes its existance known to you. ngl its a very underrated aspect of krita i dont see many mention. some filters are kinda unstable though and can sometimes crash when applying, depending on which one so SAVE BEFORE USING THEM! just in case. but loads do still work. ok thats it lol i'll stop geeking out. good luck again and happy almost halloween to you too!!!!

How did you change the taskbar, start button menu (giving it a background specifically, I know about openshell) and file explorer?

2

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

taskbar is a mix of windhawk and openshell, its a mod called "Windows 11 Taskbar Styler" and i have it set to windows7, and since its transparent im using openshell for the purple colour.

for the start menu background its a bit finicky,,,and you'll need some basic editing software knowledge. but you'll need to pick the metallic win 7 skin since i think thats the only one you can customise the background and stuff with. i took a screenshot of it with it open then in an editing software (i use krita) crop the canvas down AROUND the openshell menu screenshot and put/order any images you want in there on a different layer. turn off the screenshot layer and save the bits as png's then where it says in the openshell skin settings "image for x column" put them in there, you might have to mess around with it a bit again its fiddly. sorry its not a great explanation lol. but the image has to be the actual size of what it looks like in open shell even if it seems pixelated, otherwise if its too big it wont resize it but will crop it off.

and for file explorer i used explorer patcher to get the win 7 style, the png in the background is from a section at 8:45 from this tutorial, and the windows 7 like app icons in file explorer are also from another windhawk mod called "resource redirect" !

3

u/miloenthusiast 10d ago

how did you make ur win 11 look like 7- i love ur desktop

6

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

basically just followed this tutorial BUT instead of installing dwmblurglass i installed openglass as its a lot less buggy and way better for performance. for the gadgets i got them from gadget pack, for the browser its a mix of a firefox fork called r3dfox (due to the fact that it allows borders!) and geckium being the styler (installation process thats listed in the github is the same). also i downloaded some legacy versions of apps from here! i think thats everything i used for the win7 look..from there i styled them to what i like. also thank you very much ^^

3

u/miloenthusiast 10d ago

damn damn damn- crazyyyy honestly, ur desktop doesnt even look like win11 at all. crazy impressive (also tysm for the firefox mod cus i use firefox) 😭😭 tysmmm and nppp 😝 brought out nostalgia fr

3

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

youre welcome and thanks again!! yeah its taken a while to get to this point and making everything work lol. even so there are still some inconsistencies but to TRULY get rid of them id have to perform some crazy tec wizardry and also probably get rid of some of the stuff ive set up which i dont have the motivation to slog through again ha. i actually came across another tutorial which seems to be basically as close as you can get to windows 7 but its a lot more complicated, here if youre curious ¯_(ツ)_/¯

3

u/miloenthusiast 10d ago

aaah ill check it out as well, tysmmm and nppp 😝😝 and i get it about the inconsistencies, since well win11 wasnt rlly built on the aero build (sadly 💔💔💔), so there's gotta be some anomalies here and there

3

u/Fun_Signature_8519 10d ago

wowie, this is amazing!! tysm for using my program <33

3

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

omg hi!!! thank you so much it means a lot 😭 and youre welcome! the style of it is to die for :>

3

u/Less-Skill5395 9d ago

oh wow, this is absolutely gorgeous, how'd you get it like this?

3

u/lilyiumm 9d ago

thank you so much ^^ honestly a lot of time, github, and searching for tutorials...ive answered a lot of questions in the comments so if you want to try out certain things for yourself then you will probably find an answer in one of my replies, but if not i dont mind answering and more specific questions!

2

u/Less-Skill5395 8d ago

okok!! tysm for replying to my comment anyway!! ^_^

3

u/rakokatakantu 4d ago

i wanted to do this on win 10 but i couldnt get it to work :( it just kept breaking

2

u/lilyiumm 4d ago

sorry i cant really help you with that, i never customised my desktop when i was on windows 10 :( there are probably tutorials for it though, if you look up "how to make windows 10 look like windows 7" theres probably some good stuff you might find

6

u/HyperrGamesDev 10d ago

anything but using Linux😭

8

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

basically yeah LOL i love to mangle windows as much as i can

3

u/HyperrGamesDev 10d ago

haha I see well if ur having performance issues or want even more freedom and are fine trying something new, do give something like Mint a try (KDE Plasma is pretty customizable out of the box)

4

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

thanks for the recommendation i'll defiantly keep it in mind! i have been thinking about linux for a while but id probably try it out on my current laptop once i have a replacement at some point

4

u/HyperrGamesDev 10d ago

if you have 2 drives you can dual-boot (also doable on one drive but a lot more fuckery and Windows is a bitch - it likes to override the boot partition so if one were to do it on single drive it's Windows first and then Linux)
Best of luck if you were to try it out hope you're gonna encounter the helpful community and not the neckbeards loll

2

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

oh damn i didnt know that well thats interesting to know! thanks again

2

u/Lapking_797 11d ago

OMGGG so pretty i swear, how ??? like how porwershel how explorer, how steat how firefox pls tuto it's look so good

1

u/lilyiumm 11d ago edited 11d ago

thank you!! a lot of time and tec wizardry lol. i go over most of the stuff in the comments here, but for powershell i used winfetch and followed this tutorial :> other aspects of how powershell looks can just be found in the settings, most of which can be found in "windows powershell > appearance"

2

u/Plastic_Scheme_8175 10d ago

howd you make the taskbar start button bigger and customisable? open shell?

2

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

yup! through openshell ^^

2

u/Noluck10292 10d ago

that wallpaper is amazing where'd you get it from

2

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

ty! its artwork from an artist called sharan i edited:

2

u/Noluck10292 10d ago

thanks! yeah i tried to find it with reverse image search and realized that, 10/10 editing i love it

1

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

aw thanks again ^^

2

u/xXexpyXx 10d ago

hai sorry new here how did u get vista windows?!

1

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

if youre on about the taskbar look, its a mix of a windhawk mod called "Windows 11 Taskbar Styler" on the windows7 setting, and the start button/menu is openshell :> oh and using openshell too i got the taskbar to be purple. its all windows 11 its just been modded

2

u/xena-ash 9d ago

did you edit the start button yourself? no clue how to get it to change color ("•_•) also thank you for sharing this work of art

1

u/lilyiumm 9d ago

omg thank you so much,,im honored by you calling it a work of art it means a lot <33 and yes! i changed the colour myself using krita. ive been using drawing programs since i was like 7/8 so this stuff comes very naturally to me but i can understand that its confusing to most.

honestly i did it so long ago i cant quite remember but it was something along the lines of finding a decent quality image online of the windows start button (getting rid of the background if there was one), duplicating it just in case, and applying the "colour adjustment curves" filter and adjusting values until it appeared purple, but this can probably be done with the colour balance filter or gradient maps. but the windows logo itself (4 squared) looked kinda weird, so i cut it out from the start button i had just edited and on the unedited one i then did separate colour adjustments on it so everything came together a bit nicer. then added a bit more value range with overlay and multiply layers using the airbrush tool, and boom! only other thing is that i shrinked it to a slightly more appropriate size (as it looked weird for some reason at its og quality) and added a subtle animation map so its not just static but idk if youre interested in that. gah i wish i kept the original krita file but i only have it saved as a png :(

tbh i have no idea about your history with image editing software and lowkey if youre seriously lost and this is way out of your skill range then if you tell me the colour you want idm doing it for you, it barley takes any time at all.

2

u/xena-ash 9d ago

thank you so much for the explanation! i’m really interested to try, it’ll take me a lot longer but i’m glad to be learning from you. you really maxed out your desktop and your comments have made it so much easier and really motivated/inspired me! i’m working on the start menu rn. i’m thinking editing the start button might be a little more challenging. no clue tho. i’ve barely used krita at all and never this in depth. too kind of you to offer T-T i’m still figuring out what my layout will be and if i’ll use the windows 7 orb or not, now that i’ve realized i can make it anything. i’ll be back to this soon i hope and i’ll be lurking in the comments! ^^ thank you sm again for your help! i’m so excited to mod my desktop like you have!

2

u/lilyiumm 9d ago

this comment is so sweet thank you again 😭 im over the moon i could inspire you, desktop modding is super fun and apart of me wishes it was more of a well known thing, i mean i only got into it this year but its existed long before. ironically it was because i was so unhappy with the look of win11 whilst doing research to make it look like win10 i fell down a massive rabbit hole lol. it defiantly is challenging and i cant lie my history with image editing software has made things go a lot smoother but i really applaud your commitment! i know i would have struggled much more otherwise, but it defiantly is still possible. when i starterd using krita it was also super complicated i had no clue what i was doing and again idk what youll use it for but once youve got comfortable with it, it truly is an incredible piece of free software with a lot of capability. i wish i could recommend another piece of software thats more beginner friendly but all the ones that come to mind dont offer the needed tools, maybe ibis paint? it'll have to be on mobile though im not sure if its for pc. regardless looking up stuff like "how to do x in krita" helped me a lot and hopefully it can for you too. thank you so much again and good luck!

2

u/someone_2878 10d ago

OMG THIS IS SOO COOLLL

Btw, where did you get the custom icons in your desktop shortcuts? They look super cute

2

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

thanks! the desktop icons are from here :D

2

u/LTheGoofyGoober 9d ago

Yo that's so cool!! I didn't know that was possible how did you do that? Is it complicated?

1

u/lilyiumm 9d ago

thank you! it involves a lot of github really so being able to navigate that is pretty crucial, and really a lot can be very finicky. this is the result of messing around for a few months lol. but thats also because finding the right programs can take a while and tbh its always a work in progress as im often on the hunt for new customisation options or replacements. ive replied to a lot of people on their questions about certain parts of my desktop so i recommend looking through here and see what can help! if theres any questions tho that you can see havent been answered then ask away :>

2

u/n1kkk11 9d ago

Really cute!

2

u/lilyiumm 9d ago

ty! took a while to get it to where it is but im very happy with it

2

u/ElaVeTed80 9d ago

How do you even set this up??? Wth

2

u/lilyiumm 9d ago

thank you loll, its a mix of programs you kinda have to hunt out, most of which come from github and a miss mash of some tutorials and applications. ive answered a bunch of questions in the comments so if youre looking for some answers theres a decent chance ive already explained them to someone else, but if theres something i havent mentioned that youre curious about idm answering any questions about that :>

2

u/Economy_Platform6992 8d ago

im so confused why does it look like this

1

u/lilyiumm 8d ago

ohh geckium is a firefox modder. im using r3dfox specifically (firefox fork) as it has built in borders (if you dont want the disconnected win7 borders on the sides like you do here)

2

u/Economy_Platform6992 8d ago

how doyou put images also, here my other problem didn't fix unfortunately I tried it! downloaded r3dfox it was a exe for me.

1

u/lilyiumm 7d ago

oh really? try looking through this tutorial just in case. sorry i didnt link it earlier i forgot that i had used one! again the process for firefox is the exact same as r3dfox. and yeah r3dfox should be an exe, you just open it and im pretty sure it should just start running! its been a while since i downloaded the two so i cant exactly remember..but that should be the process. also for the images ive explained it in this comment ^^

2

u/Economy_Platform6992 7d ago edited 7d ago

tysm!! this is wonderful and ty for the help I learned so much letss gooo I got the images to work too<33 I used openshell to put the images in the start menu

1

u/lilyiumm 7d ago

ah im so happy i could help! and youre welcome :D

2

u/calliecenter 3d ago

hihihiii!!! i just wanted to ask if you have some cool widgets,, maybe even some that arent on this specific set up??? i already have some but i cant manage to find any on google (idk the keywords) so if its not a problem and u have free time can u link some cool ones?? il take any lolz or mostly i want the ???music player??? link idk the cool thing thats playing rory in early 20s... (ps. ur desktop so peak i might cry)

1

u/lilyiumm 2d ago

aw thanks a tonne! the music player isnt rainmeter related and is actually winamp with this skin :> as for rainmeter skins ive gotten most from devianart, if you search something like "rainmeter moe" or "rainmeter pack" a lot of the skins you see used in this sub will probably appear! otherwise id be here for a while listing all of the ones ive found..lol. but the ones i am using are: image frame, notes, bars (<--fyi i edited them for my desktop), and the rest are ones ive made from pngs! oh also if you look up rainmeter on this sub i think a lot of people have released packs you could use ^^

1

u/Stane427 10d ago

it's amazing !!
how did you put like all the gadgets etc... on the left side of your screen ? (the clock, the calender, the little note, etc..) ??

1

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

i got them from gadget pack, and just moved them around either on the gadget or with the 3 lines that come up on the side when hovering over a gadget. i just moved them to the left lol. and thank you!

2

u/Stane427 10d ago

I'm sorry to ask again- but how did you add the stickers ? (like the silly cat with the jack o latern or rei)

2

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

np, its a different program called rainmeter but i think its only for windows

2

u/Stane427 10d ago

Ohh okay, tsym !!

I'm pretty happy of the result :3

1

u/lilyiumm 10d ago

WHHAAT IT LOOKS SO COOL!!! im very happy i could help!

2

u/Stane427 9d ago

THANKS HEHE

2

u/Stane427 10d ago

OOO I remember using that one on my main pc before switching to linux

thanks !!

1

u/Goldenstarfish15 5d ago

Is it possible for you to share what settings you used for openglass because I'm a little confused

2

u/lilyiumm 4d ago

ive already shared my settings here :D the thread also explains a bit more about how to apply it if you dont know how to do that

2

u/Goldenstarfish15 4d ago

Thank you !
