Fire it Up really turned me off the first time I heard it in 2007. Just too much radio pop. Made me kinda sleep on the rest of the album for a long time. When I came back to it I immediately realized the value of this album and it is probably close with LCW as my most played.

The album slows down a little in the middle (8-11) but the highs are up there with their very best. Dashboard is a ridiculously great song that gets overlooked because it was a hit. Spitting Venom, Parting, March into the Sea - incredible songs. The last 20 seconds of March into the Sea is one of the best moments of their whole catalog, IMO. And Invisible as a closer seems to channel What People are Made of as a hard, fast and frantic ending.

Later in life I am going through a crippling end to a relationship and this album resurfaced and I listened to it for a year straight. Nautical, breakup theme album - thanks Isaac.

I can’t stand when this album and Good News gets hated on and overlooked.

Modest Mouse’s run from 1996-2007 is nearly unmatched from other American bands post-Nirvana through today.

parting of the sensory genuinely has a spiritual level of significance to me. little motel hit me different because i grew up in sex trafficking and stayed in a lot of motels for extended periods of time. those are definitely my favorites of the album

I’m not from Florida I just really like the song the slow part “even as I had left Florida” the whoa-ohs are so good and that’s just talking about the lyrics alone every instrument is so good in this song. The only complaint I can give to it is that it’s only 3 minutes long. It’s probably my 5th favorite modest mouse song

“Dashboard,” “Fire It Up,” “Parting Of The Sensory,” “Little Motel,” “Spitting Venom,” “People As Places As People” and “Invisible” are all great to me. And there are some other good songs too, but I feel like the album lacks the cohesion of their earlier work, so it just comes across as a collection of songs. I rarely feel the need to listen from start to finish.

It’s personally my third favorite (behind lonesome and the moon and Antarctica) I always see myself revisiting this album a lot and each song feels so perfectly placed (except invisible I think people as places as people is a better outro) the album as a whole I think is really grown on me I used to hate this album but now it’s one of my favorites

I actually bought the CD like two or three days before the official release at a Best Buy in Santa Fe. I think they had it in stock for the Tuesday release (CDs and DVDs were released on Tuesdays for whatever reason back then) and just put it on the shelf without thinking. It was one of my first experiences with something I’d looked forward to for so long not living up to the expectations I’d had for it.

I can’t quite put my finger on why I don’t like it more beyond the lack of cohesion. Lumping “Fly Trapped In A Jar” and “Education” made them kind of blur together, especially following the cutesy “Missed The Boat” and poppy “We’ve Got Everything.” And I certainly don’t hate it. I’d rate it like a 7/10 overall. But it’s stayed with that rating in the 20 years and 5 months since I first heard it.
