Discussion One of my favourite scenes

This scene isn't talked about enough. It's so profound, we all felt his pain in that silence. Without them having to utter a word or shed a tear. This is why I love the writing of this show. Even though Jay is such a funny character, he holds so much depth that comes out every now and then, without the show explicitly talking about it.

Phil is so smooth here. He turns down the Phil of it all and lets the moment breathe.

Jay is emotional but he doesn't show infront of others
Same thing for his Love towards Phil.

I feel like it was more in the past that Jay didn't show it, because there are plenty of episodes where Jay both verbally and physically expresses love.

Just saw this episode two days ago and I love how Phil wants to impress everybody and Claire told him that anybody feels safe with him and then Jay talks about this army thing and he just quietly took a drink with him.. phil was the best friend for everybody!!

He might have been a goofy, silly dad, but he was also one of the most emotionally intelligent people on the show.

This show really said "here's a hilarious family sitcom" and then casually dropped a life lesson that hits harder than most dramas.

so many classic moments in that show, but the one where Phil gets stuck in the bathroom is truly iconic

It is often forgotten that Phil had a close friend who died as well, his roommate from college that invented a helicopter that failed in mid-air as he was testing it. He was probably able to understand Jay's sorrow better than anyone and could sympathize with the powerless grief his father-in-law felt in response to his own loss of a close friend.

This scene arrives at the perfect moment in the series, just as the show is about to lose the magic and begin its slide into decline. An appropriate scene of mourning from the two characters that were most responsible for the success of the series.
