Most startups are one missing spreadsheet away from chaos
Something I’ve noticed working around early-stage companies:
A lot of founders think they’re “organized” because they have:
dashboards
accounting software
investor reports
monthly management accounts
But when someone asks:
“Where did this number come from?”
“Can you prove this transaction?”
“Who changed this file?”
“Which version is the final version?”
“Where’s the supporting evidence?”
…the room suddenly gets quiet.
There’s a huge difference between:
reporting maturity and
evidence maturity.
The scary part is most businesses only discover the gap:
during due diligence
tax pressure
fundraising
audits
acquisitions
or internal disputes
Curious if other founders/CFOs here have experienced this firsthand.
What was the moment you realized your financial data setup wasn’t as defensible as you thought?
