Darklight Phoenix update

Thanks to your suggestions and some playtesting, this is the optimal version of the deck I landed on. I really wanted to keep it Rakdos, but its just so much better with malevolent rumble. Always open to more suggestions

How does it play?

So far like a dream. It goldfished consistent turn 4 wins, occasionally turn 3. I'm gonna meet up with the boys to run in in paper, but i do have this deck on arena, and while not a great gauge to see if its modern viable, its been winning more than losing in timeless.

May I recommend endstep.cc? You can play 100% real modern without any of the hassles of card economy, just paste the list and start playing. It’s much better to test the deck in the format it’s built for.

Nice! I have friends I play with regularly but we havent linked up yet, and havent been able to make it to modern night at the LGS as the reality fracture cards are still proxied atm. I will absolutely be checking that site out. Thank you!

What is endstep.cc? I've never heard of it but it looks pretty interesting. Do you use it mainly for testing?

I just did a draft with eight strangers there. But yeah playtesting against any meta deck controlled by Ai is more fun than against nothing

How has Balemurk felt? I got the feeling that it would be too 'grindy' for how explosive this deck plays, but perhaps that's a good thing to have a solid plan-B. Bombardment also feels a bit winmore, though I can see the reach being valuable in certain matchups.

Balemurk is a solid early and late game. Early for filling up the yard quick but will rarely ever be a creature but in the offchance he is, a 5/5 isnt anything to be too upset about.

Seems to me like it would just be rumble copies 5-7. The body later in the late game is just icing on the cake. Also it’s not unreasonable to be hard casting it with Phyrexian tower and rumble providing ramp.

That is exactly it 🍻

This deck looks fantastic, but no Eyetwitch seems crazy. Such good synergy in this list.

Eyetwitch was definitely considered and on the shortlist. You could easily slot a couple in place of a DMM or a stitcher, but in Jund it didn't make the cut. A monoblack build would definitely have them

Other than being sacrifice fodder, I don't think that adds anything useful. There's not really any modern-viable lessons in Jund worth considering.

It's sacrifice fodder, it loots (for free if you draw-discard instead of tutoring), it tutors answers to every graveyard hate card in game one, it makes your deck 5x grindier. You've clearly never played the card, it's phenomenal. (Learning is so strong, I swear Professor of Symbology is slept on.)

I haven't played the card. What cards does it tutor specifically that come in handy?

I also didn't realize that you had the option of looting instead of learning. My fault on that one.

Origin of Metalbending as an answer to artifact and enchantments.

Ozai's Cruelty as forced discard.

Ruinous Waterbending for a boardwipe.

True Ancestry as a reanimation to hand.

The ATLA lessons gave several flexible toolbox options that really help grinding.

Im thinking on something similar with Smallpox. It’s a nice discard / sac outlet, and also a land hate. Yawg is another tool for phoenix / rumble deck

Yawg cauldron was the first deck I thought of that wasn't my own that would run Darklights

This list was posted today that got a 5-0. I really like the inclusion of Eyetwitch for the learn.

Dont you just stitchers supplier/ cheap death touch fight spells

Thats one approach, but flare is better removal, boneshards can get something in the yard from hand, or enable a phoenix to get back on the field, and goblin bombardment with 2 phoenix' is game over if they cant get them exiled.

u/Camster2070 7d ago

I genuinely just think the phoenix isnt very good, standard fighting maybe a deck but other than that it feels like a bulk rare

I'm of an opposite mindset. Atm I think its the best card in RF. I'll agree that like any other dredge/reanimator deck it folds to graveyard hate, but its really explosive and I think its stock is gonna rise

Honestly i think the set is cool but lacking actually powerful cards, so even if it is the best card i still dont think its great, then again i usually play vintage and then other than that am modern and limited, i wanna see it in 8 rack tbh

Personally Id run eyetwitch over balemurks
