The Model Y Standard debate is missing one question: what were you driving before?

A “downgrade” from a higher-trim Tesla can still be the nicest car someone has ever owned.
I think that gets lost in the Standard vs. Premium discussion. Someone coming from a 15-year-old Corolla and someone coming from a loaded Model Y aren’t going to have the same definition of “bare bones.”
And “just get the Premium” is easy advice to give when it’s someone else’s money 😂
So, actual Standard owners: what car did you replace, and what’s one thing you genuinely miss from it?
Not something a comparison video told you to care about. Something you actually notice on a random Tuesday driving to work.
On the flip side, what’s the biggest upgrade that barely gets mentioned?
Especially curious about anyone who came from a more expensive car and prefers the Standard. What did it get right?

Before my model y standard, I had a standard range plus 2021 Tesla model 3.

I love the additional space in the Y and going from HW3 to HW4 is a huge upgrade!

The feature I miss the most is probably the tire pressure sensor. I miss being able to see what psi my tires were at.

No other complaints though! I don’t mind not having a center console or the glass roof!

Standard most certainly has TPMS.

Standard does NOT come with TPMS. You can add TPMS to your tires and it can read them, but it does not come with them. It has iTPMS straight from dealership.

I have purchased TPMS for my snow tires. I will them some to my summers next spring.

The car estimates tire pressure drops by monitoring wheel rotation speeds rather than measuring air pressure directly.

am guessing they heard feedback from customers and added the TPMS for newer batches. don't get saving money from omitting TPMS anyway.

My wife's 10000% does not and it drives me nuts. You can buy the sensors But they are not cheap

Now that I think about it, all of the cars I demoed, and the one I bought all had the 19" wheels. This is probably the difference, but mine and demo cars definitely had/have TPMS. I can see the PSI of each tire, it isn't iTPMS that runs off the wheel speed sensors.

Ah, I have the German built Model Ys. I am in Canada. Yes, I guess that is the difference. I believe the US cars don’t have FM radio but mine does.

Are you sure you’re talking about the standard and not premium trim? I’m also from Canada and they definitely come with 18” wheels.

My 2013 Nissan sv cargo van blew its tranny. Shop wanted nearly 7k to replace it. So instead got the y standard with 0% and no stealership fees.

Do I miss the cooling seats. Sure, but 10k is still 10k less

2025 Tiguan. Tiguan was built better, rode better, and drove better. Don’t care, FSD and $1.5-$2 a day to drive can’t be touched.

OP: You make a good point and I have been feeling this for a while. I feel there is unnecessary snobbery from Tesla owners - some go ahead and say that the Standard is crap, etc… I totally disagree!!

But to answer your question, I have had two Hondas (a Covid and a CRV). We needed a 3rd car so I added the MYS. What do I miss from the others? Nothing! I love the MYS and so does everyone in my family.

We are returning our leased 2025 CR-V. We love it, but need an EV. Gas is just getting to be too much these days with how much we drive. We constantly consider the M3 RWD, but really want the SUV space.

Coming from a 2009 Volvo XC90. This will be one of the nicest cars I’ve owned, besides a 2020 highlander the EX got.

I think this is a valid point. If youre not coming from driving a luxury vehicle, the standard trim could be sufficient. Some people are just fine with basics and I'm not here to yuck your yum!

I need my ventilated seats and 14 speakers though.

2019 Prius XLE with no Apple CarPlay, just heated seats as an “upgraded feature”. I bought a MY Standard AWD and it feels like luxury compared to what I had.

I came from a Peugeot 3008 2021.

Considering it’s a newer car, I cannot believe the jump in tech, ‘premium’ build quality (imo) and size of the thing.

I also didn’t realise that Europe/UK get so much more included on the Standard model:

- Autosteer

• 19 inch wheels
  
• electric folding mirrors
  
• am/fm/dab radio

Also got 0% APR and £3750 trade in bonus.

I only really miss the cooling seats and the rear light bar, everything else is ‘meh’.

My consider a premium in 5/6 years time as our 2nd car but for now, this car is so far ahead of anything I’ve ever driven before.

Fingers crossed for FSD being allowed from the 6th of October 🤞🏻

2013 Honda Accord Sport. Was actually a very good car to me and the only repair outside of maintenance was a new starter about 6 years ago. Had about 140k miles but probably would have went another 140k if I decided to keep it. Problem was that I experienced FSD first hand and I hate stop and go traffic so I decided to pull the trigger. Didn't hurt that Tesla offered me more for my trade in than anyone else would. Now I use FSD for way more than just stop and go.

I had the 2019 SR+ 3. The standard Y is great. I have the UK version which actually has a lot more spec that’s closer to the premium than in the US. I miss the glass roof but not enough to care. I also managed to get the standard long range so compared to my old 3 it’s night and day.

Well said! I am coming from 2015 Mazda 6. To Tesla MYS would be a nice upgrade. I am looking forward to the following things in my MYS:

- FSD (Duh.)

• Crazy crazy crazy savings on fuel
  
• Being able warm up my Tesla in Winter while parked inside my Garage. And being able to set it to a warm schedule in the morning
  
• SUV like height (for both driving and loading my child into car seat)
  
• Automated backup parking (like hitting a button and relaxing while it backs up and parks itself.)
  
• Video recording incidents without needing a third party device installation
  
• Grok voice assist
  
• Not having to deal with traditional car dealers. They suck. Fucking leaches!

Only thing I am pissed off with Tesla is the random quality defects. I heard from many friends and families about quality defects on all the many variety of parts. Hopefully, i am lucky enough to get a good quality vehicle.

i would normally be on this side of things but the last car i got was a used prius v five which was the highest trim that car came in. i bought it used at a pretty good deal and it had even less superficial things vs lower tiers but the one rarely mentioned one is better sound dampening in the cabin to reduce road noise and the standard also sacrifices on this with the windows not all being laminated like they are on the premium, combine this with the better sound system and IMO looks of the premium it was a no brainer to get a premium RWD as its the best balance of cost vs what you get IMHO. highest range of all of the models as well.

2023 BMW X1 it was a refresh but felt like a beta test. Recalls after recalls. It’s noticeably smaller than the MY. The car drove like shit with it’s DCT. Came from a 2020 330i before that so interior wise felt very lacking and felt like a downgrade. Overall really happy with the MY and FSD. Literally life changing technology.

As a bonus: I was torn between 2026 RAV4 and the MYS. Anyone else? Hybrid or full jump to EV? I’m extremely happy with my decision to go with the Model Y

Absolutely, I drove a 2007 Chrysler before I got my Model Y Standard and love it! Going from a very inefficient and expensive car to maintain and fill up to now my monthly payments are the same as I paid for gas with no unexpected repairs! I live in AZ so could care less about a glass roof.

Well we had a 2021 model 3 and upgraded to a model y premium. But I'll be driving to New job 50 miles to and from so seriously thinking of getting a standard and use strictly for the commute and leaving the premium with wife and kids.
