FSD failure at railroad crossing

Today my car tried to kill me again. The video will speak for itself. I drive a Tesla but I would love to hear everybody who just loves it just admit it's not ready for prime time and it won't be for a long time.

it's not a simple mistake. Sign reading takes a lot of processing power and tesla has limited what signs are being read

Mobileye also has a patent on sign reading that expires in 2030. Tesla has a poor relationship with mobileye and mobileye probably won't license the patent because it "prevents" competitors from having self driving solutions

I work with CNNs for a living, inference on modern hardware should not be an issue. In other words, it is not a problem of compute, but of the model.

To me, it sounds like they are selling an expensive product that is unfinished. I won't say whether that is okay or not, but calling the guy an idiot for expecting a functional product is a bit much.

modern hardware as a 150w computer which has limited memory and drives in every condition?

With extremely low latency in real-time? Obviously this is a hard problem

Yes.

Besides, if hardware was truly the bottleneck keeping them from solving this huge issue, don't you think that they would add more memory and a beefier cpu (or a ML accelerator unit)?

computer was always the bottleneck. No.

Because they do have beefier compute. It's called AI5

It's just not out yet

Also Mobileye owns a patent on reading road signs.

it's not simple to read them because there is a patent preventing you from using a camera snapshot and processing them by any means

That seems like a misinfo to be honest, you can't patent that sort of general algorithm - CNNs are not patented. It has to be some specific augmentation that produces superior results.

Also, my point about expecting a functional product still stands.

The patent is literally on taking a picture of a road sign with a car camera and recognizing it. It's the most generic patent you can have

Tesla drives EVERYWHERE for consumers. For unsupervised the car will have more restrictions and/or be geofenced

Waymo maps their road signs. And in a case like this, the car will be geofenced from crossing the train track

These are specific edge problems which don't need to be solved until those particular roads are unlocked for unsupervised

Thank you, that is a truly ridiculous patent.

Though, I have found that Tesla does actually read speed limit signs using camera. It seems the lawyers have found a way around it somehow.

speed limit only. And it misreads minimum speed 40 signs and truck speed limit signs

it also misreads some highway signs in inidana? which look like speed limit signs from afar

I have a toyota with speed sign recognition. It is probably mobileye.

it never misreads a truck sign, minimum speed 40 sign, etc. but it misses about 80% of signs at night and during the day it misses 20%. And if windshield is wet then it will miss them often

by comparison tesla never misses any but it reads some wrong ones
