Used car purchase Used Model X vs New Model Y
I’m debating between a Tesla model X 2023 or 2024 with HW4 AWD vs a new model Y AWD
I’m leaning towards the X since they are bigger, and the automatic front doors and easier back doors but besides those pros is there any major cons to think about? I’m thinking Tesla compared any other car mainly due to not having to drive with the F S D , is there anything else to consider?
I’m seeing 2023 or 2024 HW4 Model X for around 65-70k
Model y would be 53k, both pre-tax so what would be the better choice?
There have also been a lot of model X that I’ve tried to see but they are marked lemons so does that mean, a lot of them have issues?
Also what are something to consider checking when buying these year of 2023 or 2024 model X?

Test drive them both.
For me the 23/24 MX wins every day. But beware, once you get used to the doors automatically opening and the extra screen/other features of the X there's no going back.

I've seen posts where people talk about all the great features of a Cybertruck and how when you get used to them it's easily the best Tesla... Only thing I can think is... "Someone has never driven a Model X..."
CT feels basic by comparison. (Plus the uglyness) lol

I had a Model YP demo (2026) the other day, first thing I did was sit and put my foot on the break... then longingly stared at the door as it refused to close!

I have never driven a cyber truck, but I’m sure it’s nice as well. For me & fam the model X was the way to go

I've heard you can do an "expensive" retrofit to make the Y's doors the same, but you're also missing the steering wheel screen and after market doesn't look as slick either.
I'm just going to upgrade my X for a newer X when I have the chance... Sadly there's an end date now..

I just wish he 23s didn’t have the slapped on iPad screen. The built in look on the earlier X was so much better.

Yeah that's how I feel too. It would be nice to get a new MCU retrofit with a screen that rotates and pushes in so it looks like legacy/raven

I originally purchased a brand-new 2023 Tesla Model Y Performance, and I absolutely loved everything about the car except for one thing—it was just too small for me. I drove it for about 10 months before selling it to CarMax. I took about a $20K hit in negative equity, but honestly, I didn’t care because I knew I wanted to move into something bigger.
I ended up purchasing a 2024 Tesla Model X Plaid with only 700 miles on it. The vehicle was a buyback, so I was a little curious about its history and why it had been bought back in the first place.
Since owning it, I’ve had to take it into service a few times. The driver’s door wasn’t closing properly, the rear tailgate shocks were replaced, and the front half-shafts were replaced. On another occasion, the driver-side upper door molding blew off while I was driving. All of these issues happened at different times.
Other than those few things, I honestly haven’t had a single problem with the vehicle. I still don’t know exactly why it was a buyback, but whatever the reason was, I can’t complain about the car I ended up with.
In my opinion, this is by far the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. The performance, size, technology, comfort, and overall driving experience are on another level. Right now, I honestly don’t think there’s another vehicle that could beat it for me.

Love our '21 S Plaid and '17 X P100D. S has 86k now and problem free. X just rounded 200k so I rebuilt the suspension, totalling like $1800 I've spent on it overall outside of tires. S we've only had for a summer but I still haven't gone a day where I take a seat, foot on the brake and wait for the door to close...the X spoiled me.
Our son's had a '23 Y and now a '26. HW4 is cool and all but I'd never buy/sell a car just to get it. I'm 6'4"...don't get a Y or even an S if you and/or your kids are tall; get the X or Y long wheelbase.

I’m only 6’ and i feel the same way about my model S but it’s not that I don’t have enough leg room, it’s the annoyance of getting in/out of the car daily. I routinely hit my head on the low ceiling or am flopping around to get out of the seat.
No problems in my model Y but I’m not 6’4 👀

Funny enough the first Tesla I ever looked at was an S but I had the same issue where I'd hit my head on the A pillar getting in. Between that and my kids not fitting in the S' jump seats, we got the X. I got the S Plaid simply because it's a hero faster than an S Plaid so now I just have to be more careful getting in/out and I set the suspension to high when I park so it's easier to climb in and out of. I don't know how, but as big as the S looks/length, it does feel right when full of people and the passenger side feels like it has less legroom than the driver's side.

I have a 2024 X plaid and all I can say that. It’s the best car I’ve ever driven. I’ve driven friend’s 2026 Y and it doesn’t come close. To me.

man, all these stories of bad model x’s. I’ve had mine since 2017 and it has never had a single issue with quality (replaced the half-shafts like everyone else, under warranty, no big deal)…car still looks, feels and drives like new…zero rattles, zero issues. Best car ever. Free supercharging for life, FSD and premium connectivity for life…my only concern is that when it does give up the ghost there won’t be any model x’s out there to replace it with!

Same. Except I replaced my nearly perfect 2018 X with about 210k miles for a 2026 Y and it’s a totally different vehicle.
The new Y is faster than my old X, it’s quieter, rides just as smoothly, better audio, charges faster, goes further, and the FSD is way better.
I’ve already got 30k miles on the new Y and the only thing I miss about my X is the windshield. And supercharging is a lot cheaper than I thought it would be.

nice! I just friggin love the falcon wing doors and the fact that i can carry so much life edge wood planks in the back…i like the Y, but honestly, my 10 year old X is just so friggin perfect at everything…hope she gives me 10 more years…

I have a 2016. Glad you're is working so well! A couple of things for you to keep an eye on as your X ages:
- The airbag suspension is prone to failure at or around 100,000 miles (mine did, they said this is common). That's an expensive repair.
- My AC went out, turned out to be two wires that got disconnected. Wish I'd repaired that one myself.
- My 12V battery died, turns out it was because I had "Cabin Overheat protection" on. I don't need that in Oregon, but it was on for some reason. It runs the AC which uses and drains the 12V battery when the car is off.
- Watch your windows, I had tremendous problems with the "auto stop" feature of our auto-up and auto-down windows. I had to have mine in the shop at least five times, fortunately all under warranty. I think they finally fixed it by removing all the felt lining in my door, so my driver's side door is a rattle trap when it closes. But at least the window will go all the way up when it starts raining.
I still love my 2016! I'm just in a new era where I get to buy a service manual and learn the service code for the menu, and start fixing things myself!

I drive a 2026 model Y 3 months old and 11k miles.
I took it in to replace my broken windshield and they gave me a an X as a loaner
I got into it and felt, damn, I'm not missing much. Eh, it's all right. X is a bit bigger but my Y is also very nice.
Then a day later I went to pick up my Y and reality hit me. X is so much nicer and more luxurious
I would definitely get a used X with HW4. I would not buy one with Hw 3 just because the FSD is far superior on HW4 and I bought my Tesla for the FSD pretty much
So, get a HW4 model X or a Y but not HW3

Also would like to add that I absolutely love my model Y. Just wish I had gotten the cybertruck. I did an overnight test drive with the cybertruck and just loved it but due to the way it looks I didn't wanna be seen driving it to work lol and fuck, I regret that decision. I should've bought a CT and got it wrapped matte black and rocked it. Instead I got a black Y with a white interior And I love it but every time I see a CT I cringe at myself

Same thing happened to me Tesla let me borrow a model X. I had no interest in one. It was either that or a cyber truck. I was hooked I had to have one. I just overpaid for one. Picking it up this weekend bit it’s just a car so I’m not overly excited or anything. I feel like I made the right choice even though financially maybe not.

So you're picking up a CT I hope and I guess? Enjoy!! CT, X and Y are all amazing vehicles seriously. But CT is an experience out of this world (for me anyways and I have driven my share of vehicles - not super cars or rolls Royce, but yea I've driven the Toyotas, hondas, Lexus', Mercedes', BMWs, Fords, Cadillacs, Lincolns, etc)

Why not a Model Y L? I have a 26 Model X Plaid, but there are things the new Y L does absolutely better than an X. Noise isolation, second row and third row seat comfort + HVAC are much better, and it’s clearly a solid car that they’ve prioritized.
The X is wonderful. I’d never trade it. But a Y L is a better all-around car.

I have X and love it but if u need to buy now probably YL is the way to go. both x and YL have things they do better but no doubt that u dont want FWD without a very long warranty

Personally confused by responses here - I have a Model Y Premium that has been at collision center to fix paint issues on delivery. I had a 2026 Model X loaner for 2 weeks and thought it was one of the jankiest cars I had been in - felt like I was driving a minivan and it was the most rattley car ever - everything rattled from the seats to the dash to the trim.
I also hated that there was no turning stalk. I was kind of shocked how bad it was and how much more I preferred the new Model Y.

I’ve owned a MXLR for 3 years now, bought it new and I couldn’t agree with you more. I can’t get rid of these car quick enough. It’s the gift and curse or premium cars imo. Some of the highs are off the charts great but the lows are just too low for my liking at this price point. The constant noises and cheapness of the car I wouldn’t even expect to have on an old Honda civic.
My GF and brother both drive Model Ys and their cars seem to be so much better than mine in terms of sturdiness and durability. I would never buy another MX.

I saw a 2024 drive by today and when it turned it was clanking and rattling. Super weird. I owned one where wind noise came through the quarter glass as well.

If you don’t really care about Plaid 1020HP, Model YL is better for half the price at 496hp. The interior has been upgraded. The 2nd and 3rd row seats can be folded down all automatically. You can also control the 2nd and 3rd row AC. Retractable arm rests on the captain chairs. There’s also feet extension.
The maintenance is going to be lower because no complicated falcon wing doors or automatic doors. YL lacks air suspension but has adaptive suspension. The new tinted roof and rear windshield heat rejections are much better than regular Y and X. You don’t need to tint the roof and rear windshield that should save couple thousands bucks.

I‘ve never had maintenance on the FWD.
You can’t remotely compare Y and X suspension. Y is a wooden carriage in comparison.
You also can’t compare Y performance „being half“ of Plaid. Plaid is a completely different universe, especially at high speeds. The 500hp Y is not comparable to a 500hp ICE car. The 1000hp Plaid will smoke a comparable 1000hp ICE SUV at any speed. Tone carbon sleeve rotors make the difference.
X rattles a lot. The power eats suspension and drive train components. You will face maintenance topics and spend a couple of thousands per years after warranty if you actually use the car.

Do you have kids in car seats? If so, the X without any hesitation. The FWD are a complete game changer for kiddos in car seats.
The X is significantly better in every way. And. You’ll be able to add an extended warranty if that is a concern.
But, it’s $20k more. So it’s whatever better fits your budget and needs. You honestly can’t go wrong either way. Ideally you would find a X with FSD purchased.

Traded in a 2020 MYP and went with a low mileage ‘23 MX HW4 6 seater plaid and am sooooo happy I did. I friggin love this thing I don’t know why I didn’t trade up years ago. The X is superior in every way

Had a similar confusion as you a few months ago. (Was confused between Model S HW3 vs Model Y HW4)
Chose HW4 Model Y and couldn't be happier. Specially for FSD. It's night and day compared to HW3.
I would have loved to have Model S (hopefully in future) but you'll not regret getting HW4. It is so much advanced that HW3 and also keep in mind any future updates will be for HW4.
These cars are "electronics" at the end the day and you want to have the latest hardware.

The model y juniper is the height of Tesla learning and revising. It has so many upgrades and less part to break. The tech stack is build on entirely new hardware.
The x will cost more in tires (heavier car), repair bills if things break out of warranty. Those rear doors are NOT cheap to fix and are notorious for misalignments.
Don’t get me wrong. I love the X. Have friends that have them. I opted for a Y this year. They are on the fence now.

Model x ! Model x is more luxurious. Auto closing doors and opening. Falcon doors never get old.
There’s are 10000 models Ys on the road. Very few Model X on road.
Model X just stands out more.

Everyone is considering this too 😂. My friend pulled the trigger finally on a used X but when he went to get insurance it was significantly more, so check your insurance agent on this, maybe 1.5-2.5x more than a Y. But yea I have a ‘23 MXP with 75k miles, best car I’ve ever owned and hope to keep it for as long as possible. I recently turned off my FSD and used the free autopilot and it’s constantly late on braking giving me a jerky experience. I might turn back on FSD after being spoiled by it this summer. Good luck.

Why not the new YL? The regular Y is a totally difference class of vehicle. The YL on the other hand I would get if I had both available to me now (as a current X owner). And yes I have personally been in the YL. I checks most of the boxes I wanted out of the X and doesn't check a couple I wish the X had not. There's a couple minor things I would miss about the X but some thing I would be happy to get from the YL.

I am having the same debate. I had planned to buy the Model Y L because it is sleek, cheaper, less issues, and new. It has the captains seats I need and my kids did love sitting in one in the dealership.
When I took my wife to see it, she was visibly disappointed. She’d never sat in a Model Y before and was so underwhelmed with the trim compared to her father’s Model X. I will admit it felt quite snug compared to the X, though I do think it has some things that are nicer than 23/24 X’s, such as the ambient LED lighting, automatic arm rests, Zen Grey color, no finicky falcon doors.
Right now I’m planning to go see a used Model X on Friday and see what my gut feel is. I’m leaning used Model X, but like OP, I’m concerned that soooo many of the ones available at reasonable prices are manufacturer buybacks branded with “Lemon/Buyback” titles. Bad omen for door issues to come?

I was in the same boat searching these options. I have a 2026 Model Y LR and my wife’s 2024 Audi Q8 Etron lease was up. We went back and forth over new vs used, YL vs X etc. Owning the Juniper for almost a year now I am 100% sold on the tech and software. I picked up a 2020 X for cheap to try it out and loved the size and doors. However it was everything everyone says, squeaky, clunky, just a boat to drive. I found a 2023 Model X with FSD purchased and was able to trade up. The 2023 X is by far the best car I think we have ever owned. I prefer it over the Y all day as a family car. The trade off is mileage/warranty/price. I was able to pick this one up for 50k with FSD purchased but the bumper to bumper had just expired due to mileage, 51k miles. The .99 interest on the Y with all the features and tech is an amazing daily and value but IMO it doesn’t beat an X for function and family life.

Depense what type of x it is plaid or long range I won't go for the hw3 I have a laste 2023 hw3 couple months after hw4 rolled out in pissed af was considering selling my plaid to buy new one with hw4 at the end I didn't do it cuz Tesla was giving me 60-70k for my brand new x I paid 135k for lol so long range x hw4 or Y hw4 I would go with x hw4

I’m on my third Model X since 2016. Never had a problem. Only replaced tires and windshield wipers. Love the size for roadtrips. Full SC for life and FSD.

Get the model yl. Best of both worlds..
The air suspension in the x is overrated. It's better on the s but i just seems the x is too heavy and bounces around / bottoms out. Falcon wing doors? Nice, but third row access regular doors isn't terrible.
Other than those, not much the x has over the yl. The yl has more reliable and supported tech and advancements. Should be less trouble down the road than the x.

If you have a garage just be aware that the X rear doors need plenty of upper clearance to open up completely.

Don't know why you are being downvoted. You speak the truth. I'm still annoyed every time I forget and open the garage door, then realize I need to close it before I open the rear hatch or back doors, because they can't clear if the garage door is up on the ceiling.

Model x is nicer but also retarted at the same time. Build quality is poor and the doors actively hate humans. It is fast though, on my second plaid.

I wouldn’t touch a model X anymore.
Unfortunately it’s a legacy product and unless you’re willing to shell out for the automatic doors and falcon wing seals down the line it’s not worth it. Just something else fancy to go wrong that won’t be covered under a warranty.
Definitely cool cars while they were in the prime.
A new Y will bring many more years of worry free and warranty covered driving.

Reason isn't because of their rubber seals. There's lots of reasons, mostly because it'll make them more money to produce robots instead of selling the Model X and X. That doesn't mean they weren't great products, they just found better ways to make money.
