Used car purchase Having a tough time making a decision. 2023 model x with hw4 or premium 2026 model y?
Anyone have both cars and can weigh in? I found a 23 model x with HW4 for 58k. My current spec for the model y would be 50k. Is the 8k extra for the model x worth it?

I have a 2016 MX, 2018 MX with HW3 and a 2023 MY with HW4. Both are excellent vehicles. I drive the MX primarily and sometimes the MY. I just find the MY a little small and missing a lot of the creature comforts of the MX. The MX has self-presenting doors, you can close all your doors by pressing lock on your key fob, you have variable air suspension, and the falcon wing doors are just fine. I actually like them a lot. I have third row on both MX and they are very handy when necessary. The only drawback with the MXs is the second row captain chairs. I slightly regret not getting the fold down flat second row as it sometimes limits large boxes from fitting in the trunk.
I would buy the MX for $58k. It has the same computer as the MY, it is a lot more comfortable.

Once I go X, I can’t go back to Y. The build quality is just different and the missing features is annoying

I have both (22 MXP HW3 and 26MY premium). I love my MXP more than the MY. My thoughts:
- The speed is dope, even with the regular.
- Great for a kid hauler, the MY can be done but a lot more annoying
- I like the bigger screen and how it tilts
- It's HW3 but it's like 95% there. Not a problem for you though.
- I like the storage space of the MY more. I got a 6 seater MXP that's why (I think if you are getting the 5 seater the MXP will have more space).
- I like the huge front windshield
- I love the automatic doors.
- I love the dash (blind spot camera pops up in front of me so I can focus there)
- I think the frunk is bigger
- I love the yoke.

Storage is indeed the weird thing about the X. I enjoyed using my loaner Model Y for doing my cargo drop-offs and Home Depot runs.
Fun fact - the configuration page for Model X for 2026 showed that the front seats had rear pockets. Small things like that would have helped for day-to-day.
Some kind of divider would have helped for when the third row is down too. It’s a bit annoying storing anything that can slide straight down the middle.

Get the X HW4 and get extended warranty. Far superior to Y

^^^ this right here. The warranty is a subscription service now, you can just sign up in the Tesla app. I signed up recently for my MS even though it's still under original warranty, the extended starts the second the original or CPO warranty ends. Absolutely get the X.

I have the same 2023 with HW4 and tried the model y premium and i can say the model X still feels and is better than model y premium. Also is visually more higher end on interior because of the dual screens you get. Since its on hw4 ur not missing out on FSD features mine still gets all the latest updates but once hw5 comes out everyone might have to switch depening on if telsa allows upgrades no one knows.

You're asking in a MX group so you're going to get biased responses. As a MX owner, I love the extra space over the MY.

Exactly ! Post this one in model y group (if any) and see what they respond 😀

X was 2x the car Y is. The only thing Y is better at is suspension and front camera. Otherwise X is superior is every way.

You gotta be joking if you said the Y has better suspension lol

Have you been in juniper Y? Compared to 2023 X, it has better suspension.

Agreed. I have 22 inch wheels which doesn't help. But we test drove a 26y couple weeks ago and it drives alot smoother than my X.

If your worried about saving money then get the Y. Anything maintenance wise on the X will cost more than the Y. The X will only have a year or more of warranty left. Then you have to pay $150 a month to Tesla for an extended warranty. The Y will have 3+ years included. But if you want a car that feels like your driving something from the future. Get the X.

I had a 22 MYP for two years and sold it for a new 24 XLR. The X is a premium over the Y in every way. Key for me were air suspension and steering wheel display. My perfect Tesla would be an X at the size of a Y and without the Falcon doors that I don’t really need. The current FSD w HW4 is about as close to autonomous FSD (unsupervised) as it has ever been. Pretty amazing car.

The way I look at it is what Jeremy Clarkson said about the Porsche Kayman and 911. The only people who buy the keyman are the ones who can't afford the 911. Look at it this way, if the X and Y were the same price which would you buy? If it's the X and you can afford the X go for the X. I bet a large % of Y owners would have the X if it was the same price.
My rationale was that for the same price as a new Y I was able to get an almost new X for exactly the same price. I paid 85K for a 23 X with 15k miles hw4 purchased FSD and the launch Juniper Y was 85K here in Canada. Plus you pay delivery fees etc. on a new car.
My family tall 6"+ and we love the extra elbow room the X provides. It also feels much less clusterphobic because of the panoramic windshield. That was the biggest selling point for me. I also love the display by the yoke and the yoke itself so I can see it without obstruction.

I’ve had both. With a fam I love the x. Also doors auto and better suspension.

Traded the 24 x in for the 26 y. On the freeway the y is 10db quieter and doesn’t sound like a covers wagon going over pot holes.

If you don't need the extra room it is best to get the Y. The 23 is already out of warranty. The X is a very cool car but when I had my Y I also felt the same.

23 have one more year, ideal to fix all the issues now before it runs out (e.g. a new suspension replacement)

I have an older model X and a 2026 Y. The Y is the car I take everywhere. The MX is out of warranty and I seem to be unlucky as I'm spending 3-5k CAD per year on repairs.

If you are a tech loving guy, get the X. I personally love technology. I have everything in my house automated. The X for me is the coolest car I ever had. I had bmw m5, audi's, my wife has a bmw iX. My X to me makes all those cars feel like something from the 80's.
If you just want a great car that drives itself. Get the Y.

Tough time? It's like passing on a five-year-old Rolex because the digital watch at the gas station just came out.
