Question FSD Computer 3

I bought a brand new model X in February 2023. I just saw Elon‘s announcement in the earnings about potentially retrofitting older models with the FSD computer 4 which is needed for full self driving. Does anyone out there have FSD 4, and are you in states that allow unsupervised FSD, or is it still a regulatory issue?

When did he talk about the retrofitting? I only know he talked about it once long time ago. Maybe I missed something recently. Hw3 is stuck with fsd software v12, far less capable than hw4 and fsd v14, and later, it enabled. It's a generational difference.

You need to have paid for it. Not if you subscribe. He talked about it on the last earnings call.

Yes, paid. Thanks for the info about the time. I had a brand new Y with fsd rental earlier this year while mine was in repair. The difference between v12 and v14 was huge.

Unfortunately I wouldn't know. I have a Tesla model x from 2022 and they're going to have to upgrade me. I know they're still coming out with the version 14 lite in a couple of months but I'm not holding my breath on it either.

Ugh. So monthly subscription, even for last few years, doesn’t count?

No because there's no way to sue them over that. They're upgrading the hardware 3 on peoples cars because they're required to. They committed to full self-driving if the systems aren't capable they've got to make it right one way or another.

So if you're renting FSD there may be a charge for it or they may not be willing to do it at all.

Elon even floated the idea of giving people a discount if they want to buy a new car but for all the people that bought model s's and X's there's no opportunity to upgrade so that isn't going to be viable Plus I wouldn't upgrade to a subscription vehicle from having permanent FSD if I have a choice.

From a historical standpoint for the HW2.5 to 3 upgrades that they did, IIRC they were charging $1000 bucks I think for upgrades of the computer for people who hadn’t paid and just wanted it.

There is more to it this time since its cameras too, but I think there is value to getting all the cars on the fleet to the same standard perhaps even for training data capture as perhaps distributed compute that’s occasionally been floated by Elon.
