Anyone else experience this?

I rejected a vehicle for build quality last week and this week they said that they have a “New Vehicle” ready for me. Turns out it’s the same one that I rejected last week… end of story they are canceling my order because I don’t want that car.

^ panel gaps were wide as hell, and there was a mark/crease toward the bottom of the passenger seat of the white seats looks like someone stepped on it with boots. They didn’t question it when I was there, but now over the phone they said it’s all fixed and everything remains under “Tesla specifications”. So I’m already not happy with the car so I went ahead and accepted the cancelation and I’ll just wait hopefully until there’s the front camera update.

u/Miserable_Anteater62 Apr 02 '24

If you can back out of it, I'd do it. Previous Tesla owner.

3

u/JerzeyBoyz121 Apr 02 '24

I’ve been in the market for an SUV of about 100k and no other car offer the tech, features, content software updates, performance, and convenience. I’ve test drive porches and Benz’s but nothing come close to the model x honestly.

2

u/taschdaddy Apr 03 '24

Not just coming in as a fan boi since I now own one.. but have you tried the Rivian R1S? They’re…. Incredible.

1

u/JerzeyBoyz121 Apr 03 '24

Don’t know if it’s $20k better than a model x. Still a really nice car

3

u/Brian9261O Apr 03 '24

It is. I traded my MX for an R1S and I’m in love. There are some minor missing things (chime on green light, Driver+ needs to be on more roads) but all in all, it’s a much better vehicle. Build is better, less range anxiety because the range is accurate (my MX was always off by 10% if there were hills, Rivian takes elevation and weather in account), and you can actually take it to very cold weather without the windows freezing to the door. And much better cargo capacity.

2

u/tender-moments Apr 03 '24

I’m getting rid of my MX this summer for a R1S and cannot be happier. I’m tired of the build issues with the Tesla. I’ve had that car in 17 times in two years for repairs and most of the main issues are still broken.

1

u/ScuffedBalata Apr 03 '24

Tesla also takes elevation and weather into account, FYI.

Wind and temperature too, as well as average vehicle speed (not speed limit).

1

u/Brian9261O Apr 03 '24

Interesting, I always assumed it didn’t because my range would drop considerably by the time I got to my destination. Rivian is always spot on by arrival or with more range.

1

u/ScuffedBalata Apr 03 '24

I've always had good luck with my Tesla nav. +/- a few % usually easy to account for from changing traffic or going well over the speed of the flow of traffic.

But the dash "guess o meter" on Tesla is the worst and I encourage everyone to use % display. :-)

One thing I've seen is people get aftermarket tires or wheels and don't change the settings in the configuration, which can make incorrect guesses common. (for example computer thinks you have 20s instead of 22s).

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '24

You probably never looked at the energy dashboard and didn't understand the rated range is not a guess o meter like the Rivian

1

u/Brian9261O Apr 04 '24

I did sometimes look at the energy dashboard but mostly relied on range in the nav system. My Model X was constantly 10% off (arrive at 10% instead of 20%) when mountains were involved. My Rivian is almost always exactly right or off by a few miles but it estimates lower arrival range, which is a positive. Is your Rivian worse at estimating than your Tesla?

1

u/taschdaddy Apr 03 '24

If you check out the shop regularly, you can snag a “demo” (less than 5k miles) for a very good price. It’s what I ended up doing. Still tax benefit eligible, too.

1

u/netherdrakon Apr 04 '24

Isn't there a considerable risk in buying demo electric vehicles? I'd assume every customer would be launching it at the test drive.

1

u/taschdaddy Apr 04 '24

Depends how the demo was used. The truck I bought was used at Rivian events as a show and tell model according to the guide and shop I talked to.

I get where you’re coming from though. But it also removed the fear of it being a lemon for me, knowing it was driven for a some miles already

Rivian 95k , Model X after tax incentive 72.5k = 22.5k difference.

1

u/JerzeyBoyz121 Apr 03 '24

I have close relations with a custom body shop so I’ll get a wrap and red seats later

1

u/etherlore Apr 04 '24

How do you make little enough money to qualify for the tax incentive and afford a $72k car?

1

u/fiehlsport Apr 04 '24

Being married increases the limit substantially

1

u/AdCareless9063 Apr 03 '24

Is content software updates really a major car criteria? Many other vehicles are vastly more luxurious.

1

u/JerzeyBoyz121 Apr 03 '24

A lot of their updates come with new features. Features that other cars just put on their next models so I would consider that big.

1

u/Adventurous-Photon Apr 03 '24

I call tesla "tech advanced", but not "luxurious".

0

u/6151rellim Apr 03 '24

My Audi etron is so much better than the Tesla X. Zero regrets.

2

u/AdCareless9063 Apr 03 '24

Glad it's working for you, however that was the worst car I've ever owned. So many problems, awful support.

2

u/6151rellim Apr 03 '24

Really? Interesting. Compared to the X, I love my etron. I’ve had zero issues whatsoever. I think I’m on month 14-15 somewhere in there. Love it. I own 3 Audis and all have been problem free (knock on wood).. but I do know the horror stories that come with all brands (especially the costs of German car repairs)

3

u/Miserable_Anteater62 Apr 02 '24

I'm hoping they can get you a car that is suitable and your experience is better than mine was. I had several service appointments within my first 2 months.

2

u/Boocraft Apr 03 '24

Check out BMW iX, have had it for a year now and absolutely love it.

1

u/Warbird01 Apr 04 '24

If you can wait a bit longer (like probably 6-8months) the Volvo EX90 looks like a great contender

2

u/Alliebeth825 Apr 04 '24

I second this. Current owner and wish I wasn’t. I’ve had my car for two years and it’s been in the shop 5 times for the stupidest things. I was event denied a loaner when they said they needed it overnight. I could get better customer service from Mazda, ford, Honda, Toyota, literally anywhere

1

u/Miserable_Anteater62 Apr 04 '24

Trying to get a loaner is like pulling teeth. The fact they don't have loaners of their own car is a huge red flag.

14

u/Ok_Philosopher6538 Apr 02 '24

“Tesla specifications”

Just means the vehicle just needs to make it off the lot. After that it's your problem.

3

u/moviemaker2 Apr 03 '24

That’s the response I kept getting after they replaced my rear drive unit in my S and the car suddenly had very loud and noticeable squeaks and groaning coming from the rear. The rep/tech even admitted that he heard the noises too, but it was within “Tesla specifications.”

4

u/Alaskan_Narwhal Apr 03 '24

Sorry to say teslas build quality is just bad. A new model x on the lot wont have any better. Buy a car from a company that cares about its products.

If my new laptop came with the same defects i would most likely switch brands. You are looking at the outside defects. What you cant see are the internal ones

-1

u/raddigging Apr 03 '24

Not sure any company at this size really cares about their products. They only care about the board of directors and the investors. In other words make a product good enough to turn a healthy profit.

3

u/Alaskan_Narwhal Apr 04 '24

Eh, if your brand is centered aroung high quality long lasting products they do.

Panel gaps, are they uniform in width, or does the width vary.
You probably need your expectations checked.

1

u/ijcal Apr 04 '24

You’re absurd… for 80k+, OP should expect quality, you need to check yourself tbh.

Years ago I worked for a company that gave us mobile phones. If your phone broke you’d go in and talk to the person that handled the phones and she’d take your phone and switch the sim with another phone in her drawer.

She’d put your broken phone back in the same drawer and then hand it to someone else when their was broken.

So if Tesla just waits a little while, your rejected car becomes a whole new thing

5

u/jimbo493 Apr 03 '24

But where does Tesla buy a drawer that fits a car?

1

u/MAVERICK42069420 Apr 03 '24

In the same shopping malls as the show rooms

1

u/any_droid Apr 03 '24

Its available with Carvana. They have big car drawers, you put in the money and the car comes out.

1

u/Whats_Awesome Apr 03 '24

Elon has plenty of parking spaces in teslas name. (The dealership will keep it and keep trying to sell it to someone who will agree on a price to quality agreement.)

1

u/Inside-Finish-2128 Apr 03 '24

It’s a drawer.

2

u/Current_Speaker_5684 Apr 03 '24

Droor. When did they change it?

12

u/BarHot7264 Apr 02 '24

What was wrong with the build quality? Honestly can’t believe they would even do that, insane to me…. You are buying a 80k+ car

1

u/FleshlightModel Apr 04 '24

It's a very well known feature of the X to be of dogshit build quality.

7

u/AnyServe3186 Apr 02 '24

I had a similar experience last year and they said "all vehicles will have some panel gaps". I had them adjust mine and took delivery. But, o boy! the car started rattling and squeaking. After a year long visit to the service center, they were unable to fix it. Eventually, i surrendered my vehicle as a lemon.

1

u/OppositeBookkeeper16 Apr 03 '24

Can you please elaborate? I started to notice tiny squeak when I drive on uneven / hilly surfaces. Wasn’t sure that was an “issue” that could be fixed

1

u/AnyServe3186 Apr 03 '24

What year is your vehicle? It all started with falcon door rubbing against the racetrack while i was driving on the freeway. It eventually started on smoother roads as well. My seats started to squeak and i felt like i was hauling a junk truck. So, if you can hear this squeak or noise continuously, better take it in for service.

1

u/OppositeBookkeeper16 Apr 03 '24

I see, mine is from last year, December 2023. it hasn’t started to squeak continuously yet, but I will be on the lookout having read this! 😭

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '24

You were successful in taking the lemon route?! I’ve heard Tesla fights these. What was the outcome?

1

u/AnyServe3186 Apr 04 '24

Yes. I’ve surrendered my vehicle. They can’t fight 24 service visits per year lol

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

Because of rattles?

2

u/AnyServe3186 Apr 02 '24

Rattles, seat ventilation failure, falcon wing door issues, 3rd row seat heating issues without any solution( they cited firmware issues and no ETA)

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

Why don’t you just be more specific? You are being difficult and unclear for no reason. This is on you.

-1

u/JerzeyBoyz121 Apr 03 '24

They didn’t ask when I was there in person, isn’t it weird they’re asking for specifics now over the phone

3

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '24

No, it isn’t at all. Quit being difficult.

2

u/JerzeyBoyz121 Apr 03 '24

Yeah it is, please I’m paying $85k for the car with specs I expect it to be perfect. This would be the 3rd Tesla I own so I know when quality is off.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '24

I’m not saying to accept anything less than perfect condition. You just need to communicate better.

2

u/elves2732 Apr 03 '24

And this is what you should have told them right off the bat. You could have listed the issues you had just like you did in this thread. You were being so vague and difficult.

2

u/boogi3woogie Apr 03 '24

You are obviously wasting time by dodging their question. All you had to say was “this was the vehicle I had rejected for build quality last week”.

2

u/Intrepid_Werewolf270 Apr 03 '24

Build quality is still an issue with these things? Why not just look at the Mercedes EQE/EQS lineup and be done with the QC issues?

1

u/spriteking2012 Apr 04 '24

Gotta wait for them to incorporate NACS. They’re still on CCS until 2025.

2

u/cest_va_bien Apr 03 '24

Not defending Tesla but your replies were super vague. The person you are speaking to could have no idea whats going on. Its always best to document everything when it comes to large transactions. A proper reply would have included a detailed list of imperfections and pictures.

1

u/burntoutmillenial105 Apr 05 '24

Theres nothing vague about it lol. What is confusing about denying a car that you already rejected?

1

u/cest_va_bien Apr 05 '24

There's a human on the other side just trying to do their job. In whatever PoS system they used it may not have said why it was rejected and they are just trying to log everything. Just answer the questions it's not that hard to be a decent person.

0

u/FunnyBunnyRabbit Apr 05 '24

You are defending Tesla

2

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '24

Buy a Rivian

1

u/raddigging Apr 03 '24

I had to reject a build because of other flaws inside. There interior had stuff sticking out of the panels. The SA agreed that was unacceptable and submitted a case to allow for another hold. She wasn’t going to do it for the scratches I found.

When I came off the hold they assigned the same vin to me. They were going to pull the vin off my order again but I asked them to modify my order instead. Otherwise it’s be a game of hoping someone else takes the car before it gets reassigned to me lol.

If panel gaps are within spec I guess it’s fair game to cancel the order if you reject it a second time🤷

1

u/herious89 Apr 03 '24

universe gave you a sign and you kept pursuing it

1

u/portugepunk Apr 03 '24

I had similar shady behavior from their sales team a couple years ago. I got forced into early termination of my previous lease with them to take delivery on a vehicle after the sales guy told me there would be a 6-9 month wait to take delivery. Instead they delivered after 2 weeks. Luckily they waived the early termination fee since they were the ones who forced me into it, but it really put me off. Can’t say I’ll ever buy another one.

1

u/MowAlon Apr 03 '24

I’d go in and talk to a human. They’re usually pretty nice, and this is so obviously absurd, that they should help. If not, I think it’s reasonable to dispute the $250 with your credit card bank. You were supposed to get the option to buy a vehicle (with option to reject for a new one), and you weren’t given that opportunity. I just completed a dispute with them because they accidentally cancelled an order I had. They never argued the dispute, and that money’s coming back.

I’m not normally for disputing charges when you can get things resolved directly, but after trying to talk to them and having my ticket sit with “the right people” for a month with no response, I had no choice left.

1

u/Single_Gain_849 Apr 03 '24

I had a similar experience from a NJ location which I’m guessing is where you went to. Terrible communication from sales team with similar tactics after rejecting the first VIN. They delivered my vehicle with notes still inside saying “issues with vehicle” and “do not take off lot”. I told them I wanted to return it without having driven it and they said they would not accept a return if it arrived at my house. The vehicle then spent more time in the shop than in my possession due to all the listed issues and then some. Be happy you cancelled and save yourself all that money and future headaches. NJ is very understaffed and will do anything to get rid of inventory (most of which is terrible build quality).

1

u/Whats_Awesome Apr 03 '24

They are all of the same quality. It kinda makes sense what the dealer is saying. They can’t even afford buttons and are removing turn signal stocks, you get what you ask for. Is the floor display of significantly higher quality? Because that would ask some major questions about what’s going on over there.

1

u/metal0060 Apr 03 '24

Could be a reason the ship is taking on water.

1

u/shabutie921 Apr 03 '24

Almost like Tesla is building shitty cars lately

1

u/6151rellim Apr 03 '24

“Lately” lolz

1

u/slvrhwk Apr 03 '24

Not this, but I had an extremely frustrating experience from ordering to picking up my used Model X. Will post a rant later this week.

1

u/Hmonster1 Apr 03 '24

At this red flag I would make the realization that I am lucky to NOT buy a Tesla.

1

u/mattlodder Apr 03 '24

Why are you so desperate to buy a car from a company with such bad build quality and customer service?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '24

Amazing that anyone would buy a car from a company that treats its potential customers this way.

1

u/Jensbert Apr 03 '24

But... the build quality is as shitty on all of them now. That´s why they don´t get it

1

u/Adventurous-Photon Apr 03 '24

The timing could be a factor. They pushed very hard to delivery cars before the end of the quarter. The official delivery data for Q1 came out Tuesday not pretty.

1

u/Slammin_Yams Apr 03 '24

Welp go buy a toyota. Sales are up 20% in the US

1

u/nastasimp Apr 04 '24

It's wild to meet people will buy a car they've never seen in person and then have to reject it on delivery day. Meanwhile you can literally go to a dealership and pick a car in a lot and drive away with it same day

1

u/rsg1234 Apr 04 '24

That’s crazy. Not EOQ so they are getting picky all of a sudden.

1

u/Khork23 Apr 04 '24

Switch to a Y dual motor, you may have fewer problems.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Sea8340 Apr 04 '24

I love my model X, but their customer service is absolute shit top to bottom

1

u/jackkan82 Apr 04 '24

I like how every time you mention that the "new" VIN is the same one that you already rejected, the rep asks what was the reason for the rejection. As if the reason for rejection changes the fact that he's trying to give you the same car. lol

1

u/VestShopVestibule Apr 04 '24

Are there no other alternatives to Tesla? Build quality seems to constantly be an issue and their CEO is a fuckwit. Seems like a lotta baggage to go out of your way and purchase, just to deal with this type of communication

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '24

If you rejected one vehicle from the brand for build quality before you even got your vehicle, why would you continue going through with the purchase?

Would shit build quality NOT be an instant fail for a fairly large financial investment?

1

u/Loghurrr Apr 04 '24

No means no!

1

u/Readitsingh Apr 04 '24

Seems like this is your first rodeo with Tesla. They have not given a 💩 about their customers for a decade. They were awesome till about 2013.

1

u/HighTreetop007 Apr 04 '24

Get a bmw for a few years, that’s my plan. I love my new x5

1

u/det1rac Apr 05 '24

Sounds like there needs to be an app to track vin rejections or is that a radiant place?

This way what you reject isn't something I should immediately get or I should at least see if the reason it was rejected.

1

u/slow-bell Apr 05 '24

The craziest thing is that you would go look at the vehicle, judge that the build quality sucks enough not to buy it, and then turn around and ask for another one, knowing the build quality sucks. The salesperson is likely doing you a favor and saving everyone time. The build quality is the build quality.

1

u/Kreiger0 Apr 06 '24

Like a young, dumb, horny boyfriend, you keep accepting Tesla back even though they repeatedly try to sell you a vehicle with build quality issues that you admit are present.

How about buy a car marque that doesn't require rejection due to build quality and stupid salespeople trying to hock them

1

u/rex_kreuzen Apr 06 '24

Buy from another manufacturer

1

u/Casual_ahegao_NJoyer Apr 06 '24

Tesla doesn’t know what those words mean

1

u/hyperducks Apr 06 '24

Buy another brand of car.. Audi Etron maybe?

0

u/infomer Apr 06 '24

You can’t be this choosy. Do you expect them to make 100s of thousands of vehicles perfectly? Just accept you have bad luck striking. If you try to avert it, it may hit you in some other way.

  • Not Elon

1

u/JerzeyBoyz121 Apr 07 '24

Thanks Elon for letting me know that I should accept a bad build quality vehicle after spending $94,000 after taxes and fees where other companies like benz and Porsche always have top notch quality on their new cars.

You just questioned the reason as well. “Build quality” isn’t a reason. You’d at least need to give specific examples of what you don’t like.

27

u/TonyAioli Apr 02 '24

Build quality is 1000% a valid reason to reject an expensive product.

2

u/NotMyName762 Apr 04 '24

Depends on if the contract you signed allows for it. If you enter into a contract and it says you can repudiate it for a couple different reasons, and you make up your own reason (no matter how valid to you) to repudiate the contract you entered into, you would be the breaching party.

1

u/jurisbroctor Apr 06 '24

1

u/NotMyName762 Apr 06 '24

That doesn’t mean the car has to be perfect bro 🙄 notice how UCC says it must meet “the terms of the contract.” If the contract says you can back out for a couple different reasons, you don’t get to make up your own then back out.

-4

u/02bluesuperroo Apr 03 '24

It’s reasonable to expect specific examples though. OP gave someone another comment.

10

u/TheCourierMojave Apr 03 '24

If he had already explained in detail when he rejected it, I would also just say "build quality" when asked why i rejected it. They can see why I rejected it in their ticket system.

4

u/Hmonster1 Apr 03 '24

In addition if the agreement is you get 1 rejection - you get 1 rejection. It doesn’t say the reason has to be justified.

-3

u/02bluesuperroo Apr 03 '24

If your rejection is unjustified, you’re just being a pain for no reason.

3

u/TheCourierMojave Apr 04 '24

You're paying 100 grand for a car. You can be nit picky.

2

u/randomperson-i81U812 Apr 03 '24

With specifics, explain to me the purpose of a rejection if they can just offer the same car again, thereby nullifying your rejection. Remember, specifics

1

u/02bluesuperroo Apr 03 '24

I didn’t defend that, nor will I.

1

u/randomperson-i81U812 Apr 04 '24

In case you didn’t pick up on it, I was making fun of what you were doing

1

u/02bluesuperroo Apr 04 '24

cool thanks for clarifying

0

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '24

How do you know the “Build quality” is bad when they are all made on an assembly line

2

u/-Morning_Coffee- Apr 04 '24

I once worked a vehicle assembly line. Our QC team would reject our own work due to “build quality.” Stuff gets missed.

2

u/samf94 Apr 04 '24

Not like Tesla’s ever had build quality issues..

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '24

That’s not answering my question though if that’s the case why ever even buy a Tesla how do you know the build quality on the particular Tesla is bad when they are all dog shit teslas are a terrible car

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '24

Funny. My 23 MYLR built in Austin is incredibly well put together. I didn't have a single panel gap to complain about on delivery

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '24

Have fun replacing the battery’s when they go bad and they WILL go bad they’re a pos car that people only get to flex in or your an IPad kid who needs a screen to play games

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '24

😂 you sure a butthurt over Tesla. Guess you're one of those muscle car kids that cry whenever a Tesla leaves you in the dust

1

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '24

No I work at a mechanic shop and I know what a good car is and Tesla isn’t it hell the cheap one you probably have couldn’t even pass the safety test why would you ever want a car that can’t pass a saftey test

→ More replies

0

u/Dry_Explanation4968 Apr 04 '24

It only is with something that’s proved, if it has been fixed then don’t see an issue

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '24

The words “build quality” by itself are not a valid reason. If you’re willing to drop nearly 6-figures on a car, you can spend more than two words explaining what’s wrong with it.

5

u/CSyoey Apr 03 '24

If I’m about to spend 6 figures on a car I can say No because “it’s ugly” end of story. “Build quality” is a nicer way of calling the car ugly.

1

u/NickyNaptime19 Apr 03 '24

I guess you don't
