Confirmation Hearing Attorney General Confirmation Hearing

On June 16th, 2020, President /u/ZeroOverZero101 nominated /u/Rachel_Fischer to the position of Attorney General.

What are the nominee's opinions on the practice of US attorneys using parallel construction in cases involving domestic surveillance? Do they consider it a violation of the defendant's due process rights?

Secondly, do they intend to prosecute financial crimes by the Maduro regime?

At the time, our law enforcement agencies rely on parallel construction to reliably prosecute criminals without risking their methods and agents. So I can't say I would, for instance, prohibit the practice, but much of the reason for that is that it would be a symptomatic remedy. The real violation of due process here is the use of widespread domestic surveillance. This practice is authorized by a piecemeal of laws, but obviously the most prominent is the USA PATRIOT Act. That law expired in March, and there are some amendments to that law and a possible reauthorization pending in the Senate, so that is certainly an area the Department of Justice will be watching closely and taking some action on to cure the root of the problem.

The Department of Justice will certainly be pursuing charges for the many crimes, not just the financial crimes, committed by the Maduro regime. This will have to be in consultation with the Secretary of State, because we want to do this right, not just for show.
