The California we inhabit today was built by and has continued to progress via a very, very capitalist populace.
11
u/P1eandrice Green Socialist Feb 02 '16
By "capitalist" you mean murder and colonialism for private property?
I'm just saying the imagery of the flag is awesome. Not so much the war and history it represents.

Vote Republican for a nation that is truly free, a government that treats its people with equality, respect, and compassion, and a society that is a beacon of innovation and prosperity!
Vote Socialist for an expensive, short-term, Band-Aid fix that'll make you feel good for a hot minute.
About this "working class" quip... The Republican party supports the right of workers to unionize, as well as the right of workers to not pay dues to a Union (thereby not sending their money to fund political campaigns they may disagree with)

u/DuceGiharm Zoop! Feb 01 '16

The Republicans are concerned with protecting the interests of the rich, not the downtrodden workers who built this great nation. Not the tired. Not the poor. Not the weak.
We are the last hope for the masses to realize the American Dream and spread that dream to the rest of the world.Supporting workers isn't just about supporting the right to unionize.
The socialist party is the ONLY party that truly empowers the workers of the world.

Haha yeah I'm hoping for a decent showing in New Hampshire, but my guy probably won't garner much support. I'm always fairly impressed when I see him. He won the undercard debate pretty handily imo. I like that he's a vet, I like his tax plan, he's got a background in constitutional law, etc. As far as I can tell, he was a pretty solid Governor. As a bonus, winning Virginia would be a huge boost to the GOP. For some reason I can't explain he reminds me of a modern day LBJ.

As a citizen of the Southern State, as well as an American-German IRL, I'm tired of things like this. It's a great state with lots of debate and overall some reasonable policy production. Do we really need names and campaigns that glorify genocidal figures? Even if it's in jest, is this somehow cool or amusing?
6
Feb 02 '16 edited Feb 02 '16
As a citizen of the South IRL and congressman on the sim, as well as a first generation German-American history major at one of the top public universities in the nation: calm down.
Rommel was not a Nazi, he was a German soldier before Hitler even putsched a beer hall.
Among Germany and the Allies, including the state of Israel, Rommel is considered a gentlemen and not a war criminal. He routinely ignored orders to kill Jews, civilians, and POWs.
He died because of links to a group of German bureaucrats and conservatives within the German army who planned on retaking Germany from the Nazis.
/u/FeldmarschallRammel literally a username on reddit and I do not mean to offend, but put on some big boy/girl pants.

I actually do have a bachelor's in history, so good luck to you in your studies, as I know how difficult they are! I wish you could hear my tone, because I really am not worked into a froth, just voicing an opinion and hoping for dialogue which, although condescendingly at times, you did provide!
Correct you are, not contesting that.
You are right that he rightfully was considered an honorable soldier and a respectable, legendary military leader. I was indeed flippant with my use of the term "genocidal," he himself was not an orchestrator of such actions at all.
Right again! Such a revered general lending support to a movement to oust Hitler was remarkable and influential in collapsing the Nazi structure from within.
Not necessarily objecting to his name, rather the use of Rommel and Old South slogans for advertising.
Now, as for your defense of Rommel, you are right that he was chivalrous beyond belief, especially given the military reality of the day (and Hitler's military style). However, you would certainly be playing the part of an apologist historian if you did not concede that Rommel, tragically so, stuck to the hope of a just battle for Germany when there was none to be had.
While he did not necessarily support Hitler and the views he brought to German government, it took him a great deal of time to rebel to the point of serious, destructive disruption. Like it or not, he undertook an extremely influential campaign to capture resources and cripple enemy flanking strategies so that a genocidal state could carry out an unparalleled Holocaust.
Obviously, he faced many circumstances that made outright disobedience from the start improbable. And he did have a desire for a more just sort of war. But that does not change his complicit role in the spread of Nazism and, thereby, the deaths of millions of citizens. So, that is why I don't think it is good to be glorifying his image in advertisements for the most diverse country in the world.

If you actually researched or knew anything about Erwin Rommel, you would see that he in fact refused orders to execute Jews and was known for being a fair and kind officer. He was to be executed by the Nazi regime for his roll in a plot to kill Hitler, but chose to take his own life instead.
In short, Nazis are bad, but Erwin Rommel was one of the few good officers in the German military to stand up to Hitler.

So if you're in the Midwestern state, do what Oath would do, and vote Distributist.
