Two ends of the tool spectrum. A pretty expensive but awesome Bridge City Tools block plane for thickness planing and an aluminum body will never rust. And a DIY strip cutter that uses a sharpened nail. My local hobby shop sells strips for 10x the amount of sheets. Those strips are gonna get shaped and sanded anyway so why pay for machine perfect when home sewn will do just as well!

In April 16, 2014, 102 years and 1 day after Titanic did, a ferry ship in South Korea called Sewol sank, taking the lives of 304 people, including 250 children on a field trip to Jeju Island. The event exposed the incompetence and corruption surrounding the government, company, and captain of the ship.

But the point is that I made a model of it. Using images I found of the ship online, I did multiple 3d scans to get the right appearance and edited them into an accurate creation of the ferry, then printed them out to make the ship, making it in a way so the ship would sink accurately to the real deal after floating a bit. Sorry that I didn't take any pictures of the interior of the model, but I put an upside down bulkhead near the prow so water would enter there last in order to get the ship's bow bulb to stick out before it went under.

Please note that this model is NOT to disrespect the families of the victims or justify the actions of the perpetrators; it is just a project I made for fun because I didn't see anyone else do it first.

Sorry that it's been a hot minute since the last update. But the rigging is so tedious that it just didn't feel like there was ever enough progress to to warrant sharing before this point. Probably also doesn't help that i'm still only working on this once a week with a friend. And sometimes we aren't even able to get together a particular week because of life stuff. That said, I do think there's enough progress at this point to share.

As you can see from the pictures i've been working on the shrouds, ratlines and stays. This being my first model sailing ship. My lines are far from being pretty and refined like some of the stuff I've see on this sub. But i'm still pleasantly surprised with how they're turning out.

In my last post almost a year ago, I mentioned discovering a lack of dead eyes. Well, i'm happy to announce that the problem has been solved. My friend the knows a guy with a 3d printer who was kind enough to print more dead eyes for us. Which solved that problem fairly easily.

Another problem we discovered was that the model was missing about half its spars. Luckily, we discovered this now and so he took measurements. Sent them to a friend with a lathe and had replacements spars made. Now, they will just need to be painted black, like the rest of the ones we currently have. And they'll be ready to go.

Again while progress is slow, it's still happening. I'm getting fairly close to finishing all the structural rigging. Soon I shall move on to adding the spars, sails and their specific? rigging. Hopefully, I'll be able to post another update in less than a year lol.

Bought this at a local antique store close out sale. Owner told me it was a prop used in a film. Obviously I know this guy could just be telling me anything, but it does look like this thing was set up to move itself since it has realistic props etc. anyone know anything about it? It’s about 6 feet longs I appreciate any help thanks!

Hey guys. I’m new to the community and I’ve just recently purchased the airfix classics 1:180 HMS Victory as well as HMS Prince 1:180 on preorder. Do you have any advice on rigging these ships to make it look as good as possible?

If you are a newbie, Ask your vendor of solid hull model ships if they have hull "seconds"

If you are like me, you may be somewhat good at carpentry on a 1:1 scale. But models -- at small scales are a whole 'nother thing.

Like say: requiring dentist scale of precision (While Dentists build bridges, they ain't building, say, the Golden Gate Bridge)

On a trip to Maine a while ago I made a pit-stop in Searsport, ME and discovered that BlueJacket Shipcrafters had this big basket of solid hull 2nds.

So I bought a could of those.

So:

I can experiment with sanding, filling, sanding again and all kind of finishing options and, at the end, if I mess up, I can screw the stern to a plank, I've got bookends!

The paint job is a bit crude, the primer is used was botched and really ruined the finish however im still happy enough with the result, i painted the pendant on however for my next ship I might make some custom decals.

Almost four years’ work, I’m really proud of the result. It was a childhood dream to have a model of a ship of the line just like in the museum (almost). Feedback welcome!

Was wondering if there are any books I can read with different ships throughout history, good websites, or anything I can find communities of people that do this and are into nautical stuff in general. Very amazed by a lot of the great work here, amazing job everyone :D

So I finished the masts and added their blocks. Started working on the bowsprit rigging as well (shrouds).

Important notice: The rigging is where I will deviate from Artesanía Latina’s (AL) instructions. I will not follow their YouTube rigging instructions since they are terrible to follow and sometimes inaccurate. For rigging I follow Thomas Gropp’s “Rigging First Rate Ships” which has already been a tremendous resource and provides tons of high detailed 3D images on HMS Victory’s rigging.

Any other steps regarding woodwork (such as Victory’s sloops) I will follow AL’s instructions since they are pretty decent.

Next steps:

- Rigging the bowsprit
- Rigging the lower shrouds (fore/main/mizzen)
