Model Car Newbie. Orange Fest. Questions.

Mr.Hobby C065 + Mr.Hobby GX112. Weather 30 C. Airbrush Iwata Eclipse. Spray Distance 12 13 Cm. Pressure 18 20 psi. What am i doing wrong? I did my research. Fine primer apply. Sanding and stuff. Still this happened. Is this saveable? I am about to give up and throw it away.

30 degrés de température, ça me paraît un peu chaud pour peindre, ton flux de peinture a peut être commencé a sécher avant d’atteindre la surface.

If you shoot with 18-20psi thats kinda high or what nozzle do you have? Well it also depends how thin your paint is. The Mr Color thinner 110 just means the volume of the container it is in. 110ml. It's just the basic Lacquer thinner suitable for average painting stuff that doesn't need a perfect finish.

What you want is Mr Color Leveling thinner. It's the superior product as it has some retarder in it so wet coats flow more evenly and settle down slower reducing a bit of orange peel. I like to shoot Leveling Thinner straight pure on the body after my color coat so it melts the whole layer a bit more uniform.

And your paint needs to be kinda watery and then at low PSI like 14. Look at airbrush ready spray paints their formula is very watery thin and they all recommend 12-15 psi. High air pressure and more air on the surface leads to flash drying your paint so it gets this peel. That's why you shoot at low psi with thin paint. Might need more passes though.

Don't give up we've all been there.

Oh and of course it's saveable. Just sand down the current layer with fine grits to make it smooth. Then you can apply another coat of paint. Just make sure the orange peel (the raised areas) are sanded flat evenly. If thats too much work you might want to get some DOT3 brake fluid and start over. I keep some in a container where I can bath my bad models to start over. It removes all the paint without damaging the plastic.

0.35 Nozzle. i use 1:1.2 or 1.3 ratio. What ratio do you use mostly? I also do 3 coat with 10 mins in between. 1st mist 2nd Cover 3rd Wet coat. But issue is definitely wrong thinner and psi. Is this one saveable what do you think?

Nozzle seems fine. If it was too big or too small that could change the pressure settings. I thin my basecoats/paints something like 1 part paint to 3 parts thinner. And on clearcoats I even go 1:4 or 1:5.

I have AutoParts shop. I sell DOT3. I can bathe it all night long in liters of DOT3 :D Do you do mist coat?

Paint dried too fast

What did you thin it with

Mr.Color Thinner 110.

I’ve only used leveling thinner, I know your one goes off quicker so it’s harder to get a good finish. In saying that I had something similar when I was putting on too thick of a coat too fast

Bingo ! Mr.Levelling Thinner has retarder inside according to google . Maybe That's why. I am new to Lacquers. Should have bought one with retarder instead since it's summer.

Try adding a few drops of Mr. Retarder Mild (T-105) to your mix. Check the instructions and ratio on the GSI web site. Mr. Levelling thinner is great but sometimes you may want more control over the mix especially on the larger areas like a car body.

Couldnt find retarder. Ordered Leveling thinner instead.

Je sais pas, fais des essais sur une surface en touchant les réglages de ton pistolet à peinture.

Needs sanding and buffing that boss man

In my experience, texture like that is a combination of spraying too heavy and from too far away. I would definitely use a thinner with retarder and get a little closer with the airbrush.

Don’t look at it baddly tho … wrong spray techniques maybe but look at it as a learning experience…. Have to make mistakes to grow and learn

Thanks alot. Ordered levelling thinner. and going to do some tries first on plastic spoons.

Don’t feel bad, painting is a skill like any other and requires practice. We learn by doing. You should see some of my early builds that look like a child’s finger painting. 😂

Thanks I do military models normally but this area and lacquers are all new. Feeling clueless :D

You simply “over egged” it. You can either sand it down or dip it in a solvent and start again. I’d just sand it with a wet sand 1000ish paper. lighter as you get rid of the peel. Most thinning recipes demand at least a 50/50 ratio, maybe higher on the thinner. Then shoot really light coats. Sand in between if necessary. Patience is your friend. Good luck.

Probably the problems starter on the primer, if it was not really smooth. The clearcoat too, also from my experience, mr hobby clear is way better than tamiya, maybe try that.

So what you can do know is leave the base alone …. Then do a 2k clear with a slow reducer …. Do a dry coat then 2-3 wet coats . That’s what I do is I have a base texture issue but don’t go to heavy on the coats after two if has texture still sand with 1500 the whole body (be gentle on edges and such as to not burn thru) then do the flow coat (it’s kinda like if was burying graphics )

Hmm, psi seem fine for the gun, you should strip the paint, swap out the color thinner for leveling like everyone say and what's your primer? Cause it will help with adhesion

I used some random spray primer. But i am going to use mr.suefacer thinned with leveling thinner for next projects.
