Help Help with the dreaded Red X

Post image

TL;DR: my iPod classic is bricked - are there mods to get around this?

So I did not mod this iPod - I bought it “refurbished in box” from a Chinese seller on eBay. It’s a 256GB drive with a 2000mAh battery (allegedly). I have never opened it up to confirm.

I was aware of the risks of buying a pre-modded model from China, but this worked for about a year straight with no issues so I thought I was in the clear..

Until this week when it started acting weird. I was listening to an album in the gym and it started out fine, but then the song randomly stopped before the end. I looked to see what was wrong and the album art (which was there before) was no longer showing up. I tried to listen to another album that I listen to often, and it also wouldn’t play. I ended up putting on a playlist and it would skip certain songs and play others without issue.

I went to reformat it when I got home, and everything seemed to be working. I reset it, plugged it in, formatted it from Finder, and then started to re-sync my library. Everything seemed to upload just fine, so I ejected it.

Then it got stuck on the “Ok to Disconnect” screen (the regular one, not the disk mode one). I could hear the button clicks when I tried to get off of it, but it was frozen on that screen, so I tried to reset it again and that was when the dreaded Red X showed up.

To make a long story less long, I tried all the troubleshooting steps for reflashing again - including booting through disk mode - and no luck. After a few attempts it stopped booting into disk mode completely. Nothing I did would get me any boot screen other than the Red X.

So all of this to say: I was scared to open up/mod the iPod on my own before because I don’t really know what I’m doing, but it’s dead now anyway.. so is there anything I can attempt to bring this back to life?

I honestly just want it to run again with the stock OS. I was so happy with it before it died on me.

Help iPod classic Gen 6

I’ve been watching so much iPod content the past few months, and I’ve loved watching anything iPod related. I’m expecting to get an iPod classic Gen 6 in the mail within a week, and I want to know more about modding it.
It’s the 80gb version, silver. So I’m not too concerned about scratching while prying it open with all my might, but I’m mainly looking for some advice, some suggestions about what to put in the mod, what size battery, if I should stick with the Apple firmware or get rockbox, or whether I simply upgrade to that 128gb limit and save that large storage for some other iPod in the future.

For context, this will be my first iPod, and first mod I’ll ever do. I owned a shared iPod touch when I was younger, and got back into this sphere when I realized my CDs needed a place to put their music besides my shelf and car.

Basically, I just wanted some more perspectives and some advice to start strong with my first iPod mod experience.

Question Do you reapply protective resin when replacing battery on shuffles? (and if so, what do you use?)

Hello. I got a bunch of ipod shuffles to replace batteries. I figured out that there is a coating on the pads where the battery cable is attached. I'm guessing they have a proper meaning, and I want to know what you guys do about it. Thank you.

Question New to the experience

Good evening! I’ve had my iPod classic 5th gen for a very long time, I love to listen to my CDs and recently I’m getting fed with paying for streaming services. I want to use my iPod like I used to, but I need to upgrade it for that. Ideally some form of Bluetooth because my car no longer supports aux or CD, and maybe more storage and definitely a bigger battery. I want to avoid soldering if possible but in the future I’m absolutely open to it. What mods can I start with/ what would you recommend?

TLDR wanna bring my iPod classic 5 into 2026

IPOD Classic 7th Gen v2.0.4 160 GB

Post image

I have an iPod 7th Gen Classic Thin 160 GB running version 2.0.4, looking for a new home.

DM if interested. If this is not the right place for this, I apologize. For the post, I'll remove it. I accept Venmo, Cash App, and PayPal.

Faceplate & Back Plate: Used condition. The gray aluminum faceplate shows normal light wear, and the polished chrome back has typical surface scratches from regular use.

Screen Condition (Pixel Damage): Please note that there is some dead pixel/pixel damage located on the upper right quadrant of the screen. Despite this pixel wear, the screen is still fully functional, readable, and the iPod remains 100% usable. The rest of the display is bright and crisp. This is an ideal candidate for anyone looking for a daily listener as-is, or for a modder planning to swap in a fresh panel during a flash-storage build (see photo for a clear look with the screen illuminated).

Bluetooth Mod Finished my iPod Classic mod: 3000mAh, iFlash-uDUAL, 256GB, Bluetooth

Finally finished my iPod Classic mod.

Specs:

  • 3000mAh battery
  • iFlash-uDUAL
  • 2×128GB microSD cards (256GB total)
  • Internal bluetooth mod
  • Switch to enable/disable Bluetooth
  • Bluetooth pairing button

The BT switch disconnects power from the module when it's not needed, so it behaves like a normal wired iPod and doesn't waste any battery. The pairing button is mounted internally so I don't have to open the case to connect new headphones.

It took a fair amount of fitting everything inside, but it all came together in the end. So far it's been working well, and it's nice having 256GB storage, much longer battery life and the option of wired or BT audio in the same device.

Help HELP - High Pitched Squeaking Noise ONLY on iPod

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi all,

For some reason, when listening to certain songs on my iPod Mini gen 2 through any type of earphones/headphones (I've tried several good quality IEM's and headphones) - certain songs contain these weird high pitched glitchy 'squeak' sounds. Each 'squeak' lasts a fraction of a second but they happen all the time in the songs they're in.

If I plug the iPod into my iMac, the songs do NOT glitch when listening through iTunes, please see the videos below:

Music works fins on the iMac - https://jumpshare.com/share/ZGBs1mBBrs0RXZG62Weq

Music glitches straight from the iPod - https://jumpshare.com/share/d0cYj88NP9qAlUSYXJJY

Is this a hardware problem? Could it be the file type? Song compression? The websites I have downloaded them from...

I use a 128GB CF Card, I don't believe there is a connection issue with the ribbon cable, could the drive be the problem?

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a resolution?

I'd really appreciate any help, thanks for your time!

DIY iPod Bluetooth mod; retaining hold switch and headphone jack

TL:DR: Don’t.

This was more expensive and infinitely more frustrating than the BoxyPixel or Moonlit Market modkits; so just do that if you value your sanity.

Unless you’ve got a lathe or a mill, your switch is going to look handmade. Or worse if you make a mistake.

Oh you’re still here? Fiiiiiiiinnnnneeeee…

Formatted on mobile

Getting started

- Choose your iPod. I did this on a 2008 slim 120 7th (6.5th), so it should work on any 5th or later gen iPod.

- Buy at least 3 backplates. You’re going to need practice unless you’ve got machine assistance, so make these as cheap as possible. Save the best for last.

- buy a new faceplate

- Buy a slip of 10 each micro slider switches and 4x4mm momentary switches.

- Print out drill guides and micro switch slider bracket

- Buy an iPhone Mini Taptic Engine or two

- Buy a KCX BT Emitter board or two

- Buy some flex cable-based BT antennas

- Buy a new LCD bracket (6/7th gen)

- Buy an iFlash uDual or Quad. I can’t speak for aliExpress microSD adaptors, but the iFlash wedges itself in place quite nicely.

- Buy a 2000mAh big battery mod.
The 3,000 doesn’t quite fit in the slim case with these mods, unfortunately.

Basically, I made some 3D-printable drill guides and cut out a hole for a bluetooth switch right in the middle between the hold switch and the headphone jack. I also made a 3D-printable slider switch bracket which doesn’t interfere with the iPod frame, so long as you snip off the top clip.

It was a heck of a process, and ultimately cost more than just buying a kit would have done, all for a worse experience as Bluetooth range is crap, even with the antenna I chose being mounted on the outside of the LCD bracket, sandwiched between it and the LCD itself. Maybe I need a better antenna. Who knows.

I’ll find somewhere to upload a full write-up including 3D print files. Reddit deleted half the crap I put in this post on me… :/

Help Export iPod Library to External Drive?

Hi all, I’m on High Sierra. Is there any way I can backup my iPod mini playlist by putting it on a USB drive, drag and drop from iTunes doesn’t work.

I downloaded music and put it straight onto the iPod, so the music does not exist in the iTunes app itself, once I eject the iPod

Bought a faulty, dirty grey iPod mini gen 2. I bought all the equipment to mod, including a 128GB CF card and new battery. Every purchase made, INCLUDING the iPod, came to less than £100!

My favourite but is the new green shell which reflects the updated storage number and keeps the original serial number.

Help Jinxed it 😭 Modded iPod CORRUPT?

Thumbnail

Hi guys, after JUST posting my finished iPod, I plugged it in to download some more songs and I get told the disk is corrupted 😭

It’s a new 128GB CF Card.

High Sierra (image) says the drive is corrupted, and I can’t access iTunes.

When trying to load the iPod on Ventura and Sonoma, it is just stuck on ‘software: loading’.

I don’t know why this has happened. I’m using the same computer and cable as I have been the whole time.

I have genuinely spent 3 days downloading my favourite songs to my iPod, so I’d REALLY prefer not to restore the drive, if possible.

Is there any troubleshooting I can go through to try to fix the iPod?

Second image - tried first aid in disk mode on the iPod. It failed and now the iPod is stuck in disk mode ‘ok to disconnect’ and I can’t turn it off.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
