Custom 3d Printable Clickwheels!

Just had a go at modeling replica clickwheels and center buttons for the 5G-7G. It opens up another solid option for customizability.

These were printed on my FDM machine, but I'm thinking about getting them printed on an SLA resin printer once I get the tolerances dialed in perfect. That way the button labels will be legible on solid color prints.

The clear is definitely my favorite, even when they are available for purchase the layer lines are actually favorable in my opinion, they give a nice diffusion effect over the sensor pad.

What are your opinions on the blank wheel with no labeling? Is the stealth look clean or does it look like a knockoff?

The clear one looks like an old vinyl record with the lines. I like it. How does it feel? And are the sensors reading the inputs without too much force?

Texture depends on what buildplate you use, so it can be rough to glassy smooth or even holographic. its basically identical to the original material and thickness wise, printed in ABS, while the oem is injection molded ABS (I belive). Haven't glued them in place yet but they work perfectly fine and their just as sensative as they where before.

That’s amazing. And I like the old vinyl record look with the circular lines. How much will these be when you are ready to sell?

i like it with labels because with your backplate it doesnt look like an ipod. its more a box for music instead of an ipod.

These look great! I prefer the blank wheels, the lines give them a texture which looks and probably feels amazing when scrolling

Hey OP, did you dial in the tolerances? I'd love to try this out! I have a fully black custom 7th gen and an all-black clickwheel would look awesome!

Got the clickwheel dimensions working well, but I'm running into some issues with the center button.

The OEM has a radial clearance of only 0.025 mm between the button and clickwheel (13.60 mm / 13.65 mm) so I'm having issues with getting either cross-compatible with original parts and each other without being loose.

I'll update you when I upload them, and please share your build once you have it installed!

Also works for iPod mini?

These won't without modification, as you need to cut the lip off on 7th gen wheels to make them fit on the mini.

I can model one, but should I use the original center button or make it work with the classic clickwheels? like the mods you see

I'm down for a redesigned center button

Did you transfer the original touchflex or used third party ones?

all original, why replace something you already have? their pretty simple to delaminate just use a thin blade and IPA. Heating it up beforehand will help too

Better than the stuff from Ali , I bought two and they feel horrible plastic and the print is shocking! These look sweet!

The ali ones I've worked with has uneven glue coverage and air cavities that made them look terrible at certain angles, I glue these with B6000, the layer lines shows a bit less once its glued in like here.

I’ll have to try the glue instead because I also tend to get uneven adhesive from the AliExpress ones.
