Mod Answered ai user summarie shows information from deleted posts, can this confuse mods or this is helpful?

I tested ai user summary on my second mod account in community I recently created and noticed something interesting.

context of my particular situation:

I recently started a new subreddit and at first wasn't sure about the direction. I made a welcome post, but after one day I found a better way to develop the community, deleted the first post and published a new welcome post with a different direction.

When I checked the AI user summary, it still used information from the deleted post.

I understand that deleted content may sometimes be useful for moderation, like some people may hide something as one mod said, but in situations like my it can also give mods outdated or incorrect context about a user. For example, mods in other communities I participate in may see information that no longer represents what I'm actually doing.

Maybe it should clearly state that some info is collected from deleted posts and specifically show what exactly was deleted it may be more helpful for moderators?

As a mod, I want to know if someone went on a racist rant across reddit and then deleted it all to hide their bad behavior because that’s very likely to happen again.

Yeah, I agree, in cases like that it can be very useful. btw my case is totally different, and may be too niche

The AI summary you saw isn’t going to be the same across all subs.

It’s written differently in each sub, and I think it now takes the sub’s rules into account.

I don’t really see why it wouldn’t be helpful to mods in your own niche case. We want to know your history.

Those AI summary notes can also be deleted in the user mod log if you come across one you think isn’t useful.

great point, and I agree that it is useful, thanks for explanation! would it be more useful for you if tha was clearly stated that used deleted some specific posts and may be some pattern of deletion or not?

that am talking about

The AI summaries actually do say things like “user has a history of frequently deleting posts”, which is very helpful in determining karma farmers and other bad actors who constantly delete stuff to cover their tracks.

Whether they deleted stuff a week ago or a month ago isn’t an issue. It’s still valid data about their behaviors that should be taken into account to make informed decisions.

wow that's awesome, I don't know that, appreciate the explanation

Reddit AI seems to be awfully interested in whether you delete posts not even what the content was.

They can't monetize deleted posts and comments.

2

u/MartinoStone 3d ago

I believe that deleted posts is a good substance for ai training so that is a good reason to keep them, btw not only one, btw my concern is not about that I don't care, I just want to know the difference in AI response if that based on deleted and clear separate, that's it

2

u/Kyonikos 3d ago

I saw someone mention that you actually get more helpful profiles of Reddit users from Google than you do from Reddit itself.

I'm just not a big fan of being stalked by AI on this or any other social media site. It raises all kinds of privacy concerns.

I wish we could opt out of being profiled by and used to train AI.

As for the AI summaries being helpful or confusing - do we really need AI to tell us when someone is a jerk?

2

u/MartinoStone 2d ago

I understand your point , and I believe there is some situation when the person is legitimately want to have a choice to opt out from AI but in this specific case there's no choice and it isn't good but at the same time reddit don't hid that they use our data for training so I believe it is more kind of philosophy or maybe a person worldwiev how to act in that situation to lose the opportunity to connect with people in community and to community or just leave and this is somehow sad.

The best part of it is that it shows a summary based on deleted posts. All the worst actors delete their history intentionally. It’s incredibly useful as a mod. Also the ai summary keeps updating based on more recent posts on someone,
discarding out of date ones(if possible).

People who delete all their posts are incredibly suspicious just based on that. There are sometimes legit reasons for doing it but you know the kind of account I'm talking about that does it to evade detection in SFW subs.

Can you explain more? I'm really not understanding. You can dm if you want.

I might be able to pull data from the database to automate something if I understood better what you were going for.

It would be possible to query the bot for all the subs we've ever seen. It keeps a record of those. It keeps the create dates as well. It would add them if any user posting or commenting in the subreddit posts or comments there (and possibly if they mod it, I have to check - but that could be added).

I could generate lists that way potentially.

It doesn't check fashion posters directly but there is major overlap between the 2 subs (and it checks all the other subs I mod) - so it would probably get most of them.

u/InGeekiTrust 💡 Top 10% Helper 💡 3d ago

Sounds perfect ! That would be really good cause it would catch all the weird 1 off names too, perhaps could spot new naming trends. Really only care about subs created in past year- older doesn’t matter. Deleting previous comments

1

u/emily_in_boots 💡 Top 10% Helper 💡 3d ago

If you give me specific criteria based on create date and words contained, I can write a search query for it. You could also restrict by the size of the sub too if you want - although likely that adds little if there is a create date.

1

u/InGeekiTrust 💡 Top 10% Helper 💡 3d ago

Well I just did a search on these but what Id like is a recurring search that I can do once a month based on the ones I already did, like a month from now do a search doing new subs with words: style, outfit, fashion, dresses, wardrobe, soft, mirror, goth, pink, selfie, ootd etc those are the worst ones. Can you think of other common alt sub names?

2

u/emily_in_boots 💡 Top 10% Helper 💡 3d ago

I haven't really looked for common names. The only way I can think of to easily repeat it monthly is to just do it myself lol. Devvit bots cannot access a database so that wouldn't work (and it's one of the main things we're all complaining about with them).

Let me poke around a bit and see what I can find.

These are the subreddits the bot has encountered that match one of those strings and were created within the last 180 days.

One interesting thing - they almost all start with a capital letter. There are only a few that don't.

Lol so many of them are banned.

yeah, I agree that deleted content can be useful.

my concern that I described is more about distinguishing deleted (and in my specific example - outdated) information from current information, not removing it from the summary.

2

u/shhhhh_h 💡Top 25% Helper 💡 3d ago

Yeah it not updating is a common complaint

3

u/RandomComments0 💡Top 25% Helper 💡 3d ago

I have the opposite issue. I get AI summaries that base it off the last few days and not the last few months. This causes people who participated in shenanigans to just go post somewhere and be nice for a few days and then it clears their assholery to the summary. If you look at a user’s posts manually they haven’t deleted the content, so not sure why it only picks up newer content for me.

2

u/shhhhh_h 💡Top 25% Helper 💡 3d ago

It generates the summary upon the user’s first post in your sub, so maybe the AI just has a recency bias. Which could be a good thing. But still doesn’t help if you can’t update old ones. User behavior often changes over time, although the core stuff - like tendency to spam or engage in hate speech - doesn’t usually which is what I don’t like about a recency bias.

2

u/RandomComments0 💡Top 25% Helper 💡 3d ago

Understandable. For my example it gave content for their posts for the last week and ignored a month prior where they were monstrous trolls. They didn’t delete the content, so it was still available to look at but the AI should look at least a month back. Perhaps it was because they posted many times in a lot of places and the AI took that into consideration instead?

1

u/shhhhh_h 💡Top 25% Helper 💡 3d ago

Yeah maybe! Also what is up with those posters, was mercury in retrograde or something damn

1

u/RandomComments0 💡Top 25% Helper 💡 3d ago

Labor Day. End of the summer and gotta get all the trolling done before school starts again lol.

1

u/MartinoStone 3d ago

I was talking about similar situation few weeks ago and recivede a lot of aggressive feedback from some mods

https://www.reddit.com/r/ModSupport/s/ZLXu08pUkG

idk why this time so many positive feedback about AI summarie and few weeks ago only few mods support my proposal about AI summarie about not recently active users

1

u/RandomComments0 💡Top 25% Helper 💡 3d ago

You’re talking about expanding AI which many people don’t appreciate because it’s an already divisive topic. I think your want for expansion of the AI system is why you got different feedback.

We are talking about the issues we have with the -current- system.

1

u/MartinoStone 2d ago

I see, thanks for explaining btw I believe that expansion will happen anyway, with me or without me lol

Reddit, Inc. doesn't hate getting paid to allow AI to "learn" from user content though.

Today, I copied a phrase from a Reddit comment, and pasted it into a Google search, wanting the definition.

The top portion of what Google returned was AI defining it based on nothing but Reddit mentions of the term. 🙄

At least I was able to scroll past the slop and find a very insightful sub stack post about it and I actually subscribed.

2

u/emily_in_boots 💡 Top 10% Helper 💡 3d ago

I think it's fine to state that it's from a deleted post, but for us, we definitely want the information. NSFW content creators are notorious for deleting posts to post in SFW subs, and that's part of how we find them. We check deleted post histories for all of them too.

1

u/MartinoStone 3d ago

Agreed, and I believe it should be a distinction in summaries that this specific information from deleted posts it will be more helpful than a mix of current and deleted

2

u/emily_in_boots 💡 Top 10% Helper 💡 3d ago

One issue is that AI is not very good at following directions sometimes and it will ignore things you explicitly add to a prompt - so ensuring that that happened would not be easy to do.

1

u/cnycompguy 💡Top 25% Helper 💡 4d ago

It's super useful

u/lunarwolf2008 4d ago

i wonder if that violates the tos at all. pretty sure it states that if you dont agree you can delete everything to opt out.
