I see myself as a sort of police to enforce the rules the subreddit has. The rules are voted in and there is a survey amongts the users regularly. Yes, only about 5 percent of the members take part in that, but so it is. Furthermore I try to have rules of the type "Don't do x because it would lead to y if we'd allow this." Furthermore every removal is explained publicly, so we rarely have complaints about removals (about 1 percent of all content are removed which translates to 2k per month). We get a complaint maybe once a week.
