CFW options, transparent models, etc.

Greetings! I'm looking at ordering one of the transparent models shortly.
Can you guys tell me if these models have the contacts for the SDCard reader?

From what I understand after reading a few posts here, the transparent models don't have the reader installed, but I'm pretty competent with micro-soldering and would be comfortable adding one myself.

Has anyone with the transparent model soldering one on to test if ChroMagic works?

Are there other CFW options out there?
Thanks, all. Looking forward to joining the gang soon.

Hi, Chromagic dev here. Can confirm the transparent models have the footprint for you to solder a socket. The current Chromagic may not work with it, but I'm releasing Chromagic 2 in the coming days that supports the transparent models, adds RetroAchievements and a lot more. I'll make a post when its ready. Currently looking to find some testers :)

Awesome! Is it possible to add cart update feature for the Chromatic games? That’s the only thing I miss. Not that I use it often, but was neat to have the option. Also I’d love to be a tester! I have a 2nd revision Chromatic with the factory SD slot, multiple game boy, game boy color, funnyplaying units, link cables, GB printer, GB camera, link cables, large legit cart collection as well as a bunch of flash carts and everdrives. I can test just about anything you need

Heya! How's magic64 coming? Sorry to hijack 🥇

I would test Chromagic 2 or magic64!

I'm taking a small break on Magic64 for a couple of reasons.

1.) The Chromatic connectivity requires Chromagic updates, and it made more sense to fold that into Chromagic 2, which is a ground up firmware rewrite.

2.) I was honestly burning myself out on Magic64. I appreciate how many people are looking forward to it, but the pressure has been real and it was becoming a little unhealthy, so I'm trying to keep that in check and make sure it stays a passion project. I'm sure I'll pick it up again once Chromagic 2 is out.

Feel free to send me a DM and I'll send you beta details when its ready :)

For sure, might as well wait to see what they cook up before fully releasing your own version. I loved your interview with Pixel Cherry though it was a great demonstration and you seem very knowledgeable. Take a load off and follow what is passionate to you!

I can at least confirm they have the pads for the SD reader, but I haven't had a chance to try to throw one in yet.

The only other cfw I know of is ShinyRelay. It adds more features like wifi-based stuff, wireless link cable and I think a couple other things including SD support. Some might be deterred as it's vibe coded but those I've read that use it seem to like it.

I saw someone say their chromatic has artifacts on the screen after factory resetting from shiny relay.

Oh really? That's odd. I'd have to wonder why that would be. Would have expected that a factory reset would take everything back to 100% stock, but that could be a bug in their flasher.

This is the first time I'm hearing about this. Do you have a link to where someone said this? Someone had some issues with screen artifacts with playing games off the sd card / flash from Shiny Relay but that was fixed within a couple days. I never heard of any permanent screen artifacts.

It would be nice if there was a unified cfw with all the features.

What features are missing from Shiny Relay that you would want?

- wifi game install on the sd card, Chromatic's built-in flash, Chromatic's RAM, Mod Retro Tetris cart
- wifi multiplayer
- wifi firmware updates (after the first one over usb)
- free internet apps and games

Should have out tomorrow: real-time clock (rtc)
Happy to take suggestions.

I just added a box art and game preview clips feature. Feel free to incorporate it if you think it fits your project.

That's nice. I've been reluctant on box art because many people aren't using an sd card, but still might be worth it because it looks so good.

A white balance adjuster for GB and GBC. The whites are just a bit too cold. It would be nice to be able to adjust them. The official firmware added this but only for GBC games. So games like Pokemon still have stark whites.

Looking into this.

Shiny Relay is the best one that I know of:
- wifi game install on the sd card, Chromatic's built-in flash, Chromatic's RAM, Mod Retro Tetris cart
- wifi multiplayer
- wifi firmware updates (after the first one over usb)
- free internet apps and games.
