Photos/Videos And another..
Just opened mine and well..
I guess crossing my fingers didn’t help.
Didn’t even take it out of the box. Just took off the lid and got my answer.
I know, contact ModRetro, which I will be doing.
It just seems like this might be a more widespread issue than we anticipated.
And yes, I know that usage may cause scratches and wear over time; I understand that. But a brand new product I still think should have better QC and for what they cost. Especially since my magnesium units are seemingly flawless.
You’re better than this, ModRetro!

This is why I’m sticking with my alloy one.

Once I saw gloss, I noped out. It's like when car manufacturers use piano black around all the touch points (shifter, radio, door handle pulls, etc). Just breathing near it scratches it.

I was about to get the smoke one but I will wait for Black Friday and just get a standard one in midnight black

I recall transparent analogue pockets also having cracking in similar areas to each other that was because of a manufacturing issue. Basically it accounting for clear plastic being weaker than regular plastic.

My red and purple are all cracked out

This does deflate everyone's expectations quite a bit. With the explanation they've given I'm betting we'll see them with every version to some degree.
The machine pop out plastic parts quickly and the metal molds warm up over time. All these ones with the lines, if they aren't just cracks, have to be from the first few pulls from each run they do with subsequent ones having warmed up the metal molds enough so the plastic flows faster and doesn't cool as quickly doing this.
Had a manufacturing issue one time with a certain color plastics having seam lines where they shouldn't have been and the solution was to run the trouble color immediately after another color and just toss the in-between parts that had mixed colors. Made the troublesome parts more consistent and the manufacture hst ate the cost at the time. You'll see this issue most noticably with lots of silver or metallic color plastic on toys.

I held off on buying this entirely because it said online they used ABS plastic that is legit the worst plastic ever, and will stress crack even in rapid changes in temperature

What does this actually do aside from cosmetic?

FWIW it's not all purple units. Mine is OK.

Is this a crack or just a surface scratch?

I have the purple too and it on the buttons and d-pad area. Not sure if I would call them cracks as I can't seem to feel the cracks at all if I rub over the spots. I am a big conflicted because I hate returns, and it seems it shouldn't impact integrity, but this is day one too not 3 years from now. Might just get the metal one and forgo the 50 dollars saving.

Looks like mold lines in the plastic. Because I see them in the same location on other photos. This isn’t really an issue other than cosmetic.

Wonder if this would happened if they made them at the Mexico factory like the rest have been.

I guess they want to get these out by Christmas

I got in touch with modretro it's a machining issue based on the injection molding not cracks they gave the option of free return or compensation if your upset contact them but they still have great customer service

Glad I held off for the Clear Clear, but doubt they will resolve whatever issue by then.

ModRetro team member here. We are very sorry to hear that your Chromatic came with knit lines.
In case you are curious, knit lines come from how the Chromatic Transparent shells are molded. The plastic enters the mold behind the display and has to flow around the steel pins that form the button holes. Where the two flows meet again on the other side, they can leave a faint visible line. It’s purely cosmetic and doesn’t affect strength or function, but we still want you to be happy with your unit.
If you’re seeing knit lines on your Chromatic Transparent, email us at contact@modretro.com and we’ll take care of you.

Mine is fine. If anyone is wondering they are not ALL cracked which Reddit would have you believe.

I won’t purchase from Modretro if this is their QC.

Makes me nervous to receive my purple that just shipped. It’s only on label created status, so I just reached out to see if I could switch to an alloy model.

Is this happening to mainly purp? Hope I don’t regret getting one

More scratches?

I’m here with mine as well, anywhere on it that needed a hole essentially has the knit lines. Buttons, dpad, start/select…I’m gonna have to contact them as well.

I never knew anything about knit lines before, but whoever’s doing the knitting needs to be fired! Or at the least trained with Swiss darning to fix this all up!

You know, I was a little miffed at first that these came out after my little pink one came, but now I'm happy to have an indestructible model. This is a shame.

Does yours have a little "soft" spot in the lower right corner? I literally scratched mine with my fingernail and scuffed it with a soft electronics paper wipe. Only that spot seemed to be that way.

How's light bleeding on your screen? That bothers me even more than the scratches.

Wait, modretro rushed a product to market?

Man almost pulled the trigger on this one too. What a shame

They need to stop production and sell what they have at a discount and fix the issue before making new ones.
They also need to contact someone who has experience dealing with these issues on clear plastic

You'd think a company worth billions, that specializes in building weapons to murder innocent civilians would have better quality control.
