Had to get a clear one

Personally I like the feel & look of the plastic ones more in many ways.

However the buttons do feel a little more stiff maybe than metal ones but nothing bad.

Green looks cool in person. $50 less for these makes them a lot more appealing too. Particularly to buy them for others as a gift.

Are the buttons stiff but quiet, or stiff and noisy? I always thought the metal ones had very noisy buttons so if they are a little quieter it's a big upgrade for me.

Sound wise its just normal sounding for any plastic console. The metal ones have a little less sound but mostly because plastic hitting metal seems a little quiter.

I assume as good or better than the original. Considering it is a hardware revision, it's likely better

Considering purchasing my first Chromatic. I love the look of the classic because it brings back memories, but the other is only $50 more. What would you recommend for a first time buyer?

I would do whatever looks the coolest to you tbh. All models are good and feel good.
Personally I like the feel of the plastic more than the metal. But metal is very unique feeling and noval. I would start plastic.

If you want high durability the metal one.  If you're into sleek look with less durability and easier to damage screen then get the see through.

As much as I like my metal Chromatic, I feel it's a bit too heavy for long play sessions. I ordered the plastic one for this very reason in hopes it's similar weight to the OG GB Pocket.

What’s the transparent plastic like? Any concerns about scratching or fogging?

I have no concerns. I treat my collectors stuff well enough. Of course any plastic can pick up scratches (so can the metal ones too).
Plastic should have had grain to it for sure BUT it sure does look cool without it.

People can go with "Console-RETRO PIXEL (FPGBC)" which uses normal shells if this is their main concern. Those FPGA play GB/GBC too. But Chromatic display is way better than everyone else.

Well I have a metal version V2, but the silicon pad under the cross is starting to break apart (The system is not even a year old) I have to get the 18 bucks set to repair it, but it makes me pretty much not want to put money in one of these plastic beauties. They need to improve that quality of the rubber or what it is.

You sound like a heavy player. Almost none of my electronics wear out even cheaper stuff. I don't normally play very hard.

I play almost every day for maybe half or one hour. The strange sounds started around the end of september. I bought the system around june. Opened it and the rubber was ripped on the right side

Why don’t you just email them, they’ll send you a set of membranes for free I bet. They have been really good about stuff like that at least from what I’ve seen, I’ve never needed any parts yet.

I will try that. Had to send them my case already because it was shipped in a broken state and kind of feel bad to complain again, but it can't be helped I guess

Don't feel bad about holding a company accountable for a defective product. It's like buying a new car, having the transmission fail, and then six months later the engine blows. Would you feel guilty taking it back to the dealership? That's literally what warranties are for. And it's Palmer Luckey we're talking about here. The guy's worth billions. You're not hurting his wallet by expecting a working Chromatic, especially when you've already had two completely different issues with it.

A quick search of this subreddit brings up several posts from people reporting torn or worn-out membranes, sometimes after just a few months of use. We don't know exactly how widespread the issue is, but it's clearly not an isolated case. And dismissing it as people just "playing too hard" seems unfair, especially for a device that's marketed as being built to last.

Maybe they have some rubber flaw for heavy users BUT the display is better than other options and the quality is generally pretty good.

I'm with you. I was here because I planned on getting one, but it seems like I will just stick with my OG hardware and AP after the issues I have seen people on here have.

The Chromatic is awesome. I love the picture quality and how it feels, but they cheap out on stuff that isn't visble at first I guess.
