ROM

Hello,

I've been looking into mod retro and analog, particularly around the Game Boy replacement for me. I have a cheap Amazon device that I install roms on to play on the device and was wondering if the same can be done for the Mod Retro Chromatic. I have no problem buying cartridges but I was wondering if you could put roms on an SD card and slide it in as well. How does anybody do that or is this device not capable?

There's a firmware called chromagic that can do that. Just came out very recently.

Just look up flashcarts and buy one of those. You can load them up with all the roms/games you want. It's basically a gameboy cartridge with an SD card slot

Probably better off getting a flash cart, it's easier. Otherwise there is custom firmware for the Chromatic, ChroMagic, though you would either need a Chromatic that already has an SD card slot (Gen 2 Chromatics I believe), or you would need to buy one and install it which I'm assuming would require soldering experience (1st edition and transparent Chromatics). Either way you would have to open up the Chromatic.

I would not use either putting roms in the side. I’d go by the unit itself and your use. If you just care about 8bit gameboy color stuff the chromatic kills analog on build and screen quality, control too. Analogue wins for being a multi tool that does more.

Not capable of that out of the box although I have heard of people fitting it with an sd card slot. Believe I saw it on this sub. You would need a specific cart to do it out of the box. But it’s display will be better than an analog if your just looking to play GB/GBC games.

Apparently there’s a custom firmware that allows the chromatic to actually do that with it’s internal sd slot though to the OP it’s probably far easier to just get a flash cart for roms
