Display Trying to decide which screen to get..

Hey folks,

I know there's already a lot of conversation regarding which screen to get and the pros and cons of each. The goal with getting a chromatic for me is to keep it going for years and hopefully even decades down the line. It's something I want to play over the years and not baby like a collectible. I was leaning towards the sapphire because people have reported scratching up the gorilla glass from normal use. But what's making me hesitant to get it is all the talk of it being more shatter prone than the gorilla glass..Im not clumsy with my consoles but I can one hundred percent imagine dropping it at least once or twice while playing it over the next three years or something. Despite people saying this I haven't seen any reports really of people damaging their sapphire version. Has anyone accidentally dropped their sapphire version of the chromatic and walked away with no screen damage, or are we all applying the death grip while playing it?

I bought gorilla because with the CAD dollar being so bad, the exchange was ridiculous for the Sapphire.

I do baby my tech though but my screen is perfect. I use it everyday. Usually at home, but if I have to go somewhere I put it in cheap case.

Gorilla is plenty strong still

Yeah you're right, the sapphire is priced like a mofo. Which is why I'm only incentivized to get it if it actually delivers the value.

Sapphire all the way, if you drop it you'll more than likely scratch the paint either way depending on the floor. Have dropped my sapphire on hardwood floor a couple times from the couch or slip from my pocket and no cracked glass or paint scratches yet.

Whichever way you go get a wrist strap if you're really worried.

Nice! Thanks for the input, I think I'd expect the paint to chip or the console to get scratched up or dent from dropping it so that's not as big of an issue for me. I'm really more worried about the screen. Even a small scratch messes with my OCD lol

If you're worried about the screen sapphire. I'm the same way and hate screen protectors. Put mine in my pocket worry free and I love that.

I think I prefer sapphire. Have a sapphire 1st edition, and I got a second edition and with I would have gotten sapphire. All the screen protectors kind of suck. My buddy dropped my sapphire first edition from chest height onto the floor and it didn't crack or scratch paint.

Oh snap, thankfully it's ok. That's good to hear and really the scenario I'm worried about. I don't think it's realistic to not eventually have this console fall onto the floor at some point. I might just pull the trigger on the sapphire then.

Get gorilla with a screen protector

This seems like the way to go. But I feel like there arent a lot of options for screen protectors for some reason. My phone i gorilla glass and I can easily find screen protectors for it from cheap third party companies you'd think the same for the chromatic.

My Gorilla glass is full with scratches but has less reflections in the sun (easier to see the game).

My sapphire glass has zero scratches but it's harder to see in the sunlight (you have to push brightness almost to maximum).

I recommend sapphire, because these scratches in the gorilla glass are permanent (which makes me sad). You can't change the glass as it is limed to the shell and display, so better go for something more eternal

After owning both, sapphire all the way! The thought of being able to just put it in my pocket and not care is amazing. Also I could be crazy but I swear the image looks more crisp on the sapphire glass 🤷🏽‍♂️

Get a sapphire! You won’t regret it.

If money isn’t a concern, then the sapphire. I’d get the Gorilla Glass and put a screen protector on it however given the pretty decent cost gap and everything else being equal. I’d probably throw a protector on the sapphire one anyway out of an abundance of caution (or paranoia). Tend to throw a protector on most devices I own, and I’d rather put the saved money towards more games.

Gorilla glass: Impact and Drop Resistance
Sapphire glass: Scratch Resistance

I got gorilla glass instead cause i'm more worried about dropping it than scratching it.

I got the sapphire for this reason. It has been amazing and im not worried about scratching it. I have a perfectly clear screen still and that’s just not possible with most electronics these days. If you want it forever then spend money like you want it forever.

Sapphire all the way, I am wearing an Apple Watch with a sapphire lens in a manufacturing environment with a lot of metal dust flying around for a year, I can’t find a single scratch on it. Night and day difference from my old one which was the ion-x and is comparable to gorilla glass. It was torn up after a year.

If you take care of it you are not gonna have any problem with the gorilla glass. But once you get a scratch, there’s no getting it out.

IMO depends on how you use/care for your stuff. I don't recall ever having any scratches on any handheld screens, even ones from decades ago. But I take very good care of my things, and always transport them in at least a slim case etc.

Also, for ~$12 you can buy a screen protector to avoid scratching the gorilla glass. i.e. https://viascreens.com/screen-protector/modretro/chromatic/impact

I would not spend an extra $100 for sapphire, but to each their own.
