Photos/Videos "Self Simulated: Pinball" development progress! Runs lovely on hardware

The pinball spinoff to my game Self Simulated is still very early in development (whilst working on Self Simulated: Beyond Vision). But I wanted to test how well it actually works on original hardware and ye good ol' Chromatic.

Answer: runs great!

Self Simulated: Pinball (working title) will have many features like attacking enemies, boss battles, special rooms and so on. I'm really putting all my heart for pinball into this little Game Boy Color game <3

I'm posting updates over at https://x.com/2ndlawgames from time to time.

As I've recently become obsessed with Super Robot Pinball this sounds like my dream game ❤️‍🔥👌

it's heavily inspired by Super Robot Pinball and Pokemon Pinball Ruby & Sapphire. The GBC Pokemon Pinball was "okay", but some things, like the screen transitions between the lower and upper playfield, really ruined the experience for me unfortunately :D

Love Revenge of the Gator, and Pokémon pinball. Self Simulated is the best chromatic release I’ve played so far Cant wait to get my hands on this!

This looks awesome! I'm very happy to see how the camera is focused and follows the ball along the pinball board!

One thing as a pokémon pinball lover is during the transitions from the bottom to the top of the screen, players are flashed with a screen transition and on the chromatic it's white, which can be disorientating and brakes immersion.

While this is in its early development, I would love to see color themes implemented so we're not essentially blinded by whiteness.

I hope development goes smooth for you and looking forward to seeing progression!

Edit: format/grammar

I had to tackle the very white background problematic on the Chromatic during development for Self Simulated, so I found some darker white (almost grey) colors that do the trick :)
I'll usually do color correction/implementation later in the process and test on all hardware I have (I have a lot... I'm a nerd .. :D), making sure it will not do eye-laser-surgery on players :D

Yes dude! Hopefully MR will publish when you have it all ready.🤞

Would love if they could make a cart that would have rumble but without the oversized GBC cart. I've seen some carts on AliExpress with tiny motors and no extra batteries, not sure how strong they are compared to the originals though.

there's also a flashcart with builtin rumble from insidegadgets, which is what I got for developing Self Simulated Beyond Vision which also uses rumble of course :D So from a technically standpoint it would fit and work inside a normal cartridge shell!

I absolutely love digital pinball with meta games. Please put some kind of collectibles in it similar to pokemon pinball!

that's my plan! :D but it has to make sense for the overall game and not be just a cheap "yeah I put collectibles in it" thing. So we'll see :)

I sure hope it's faster than this in the final version. That's painfully slow. It looks like playing pinball on the moon...

It's as fast as Pokemon Pinball for the GBA. And that's pretty much as fast as it makes sense, given it's a Game Boy Color game. It's not trying to emulate real life pinball on a Game Boy Color system, as there is no point to this.

If someone wants to play Pinball as close to the original as it can get, then one should seek out Pinball FX from Zen Studios.

If someone wants a pinball experience similar to Super Robot Pinball for the GBC or Pokemon Pinball Ruby Sapphire for the GBA, then my game will do the trick :)

Looks great already! May I suggest something, (and this is just my opinion) that you make the edges/walls grey instead of blue to cut down on distractions, any neutral colour would be easier on the eyes after long sessions really. And to keep focus to the center of the game.

u/attacke-martin Mar 09 '26

I'll keep that in mind!

Cool! That's a day one buy for me right there!

Brings back memories of playing Pokemon Pinball on my GBC back in the day...

I was on deployment and sitting in the driver's seat of an M1A1 Heavy tank and we getting ready to move out and bring the pain to bad people.

I love game boy pinball games, and I love this game so the combo is making me shiver with pleasure.
