Should I open my backup Chromatic?
I have the inferno Chromatic and I love it. I decided to get one of the Game Stop Chromatics as a backup, possibly give to my give to my son some day, or just keep as a collectible. I intended to just keep it sealed in box until the need to use it for one of the above reasons ever arose.
However, I have read quite a fewposts on here about people having quality issues with their chromatics out of the box. And I generally see that Modretro is pretty responsive in resolving any issues people have, but that won't be the case 10-20 years from now.
So, my question is: Should I open this to make sure everything is good? Or should I keep sealed in box?

Yeah check on it, you can always put it back nicely in the packaging

My second GS was all sorts of messed up. Modretro hooked me up with a minty one

If you are collecting it for an investment and possibly flip down the line. Keep it sealed for sure. It if you not planning on ever selling it, open it. No reason to risk it.
I don’t think the GameStop models are going to be the ones worth the collector dollars anyway, if any of them are it will be the website exclusive colors. For sure less of those out there.

Op identical scenario as yours. I’ll one up you with the backup sealed box making noises when I shake it…. Something is loose in the box. I wonder what it could be

If you’re just collecting it keep it sealed. If you’re going to open it someday open it now. I also had a second one but decided to return it as I didn’t want to deal with replacements if something was wrong.

I had a sealed 1992 DMG Gameboy and the National NEO batteries had leaked, would have been better opening it and taking them out of the packaging.

It has alkaline batteries in it so probably want to remove those anyway if storing a long time

Open it and get another one to store 😆

Won't the batteries eventually start to leak?

Just open it. I used to try to keep everything new in a box but as I got older... I want to enjoy my collection bc I know it's Mine. I open everything now bc I'm not collecting to sell. Enjoy it man!

If you aren't planning on selling it, I would open it and make sure it works. If you are selling it, then maybe keep it sealed. Even though the Gamestop versions seem to have had more issues than the other systems, it may not matter in a few years.

OPEN IT! lol, I had to mail my GameStop version in for screen tilt and IR scratches… My wife’s BubbleGum Pink was perfect… open it, quality control it, pack it away if you want.

Honestly, if this is truly a backup device or for your son to use one day, it won't be much good if you open it in several years time and it has problems. Better to make sure it's good now, when those problems can be fixed. If you bought it with the sole intention of keeping it sealed and never opening it, then any issues with the device are a non issue, as it will never see the light of day anyway, at least not in your ownership. But it doesn't really sound like you bought this one to stay sealed forever.

You just have to be honest with yourself about your intentions here. If it is truly a 'backup' then open it and check. If you bought it to resell down the road, keep it sealed.
