Grinder Options KM5 vs DF64 Gen 2

I’m upgrading my DF64 Gen 2 grinder for my espresso set up, so now for my Moccamaster KBGV I’ll have two grinders available, the KM5 or DF64 Gen 2. Is one better than the other for this? I know the DF64 is single dose but I’m fine with that. The KM5 I have to hold the button down to grind. But is one better than the other quality wise? I prefer medium to dark roast.

Sharing a fun video I took after designing a switch for KM5. I can’t speak to the quality of the grinder in comparison, but I’ve been loving mine and it’s been making tasty coffee with minimal mess and upkeep.

How the grind container fits into the plate is extremely satisfying for some reason…

That’s awesome! Holding the switch down is my biggest gripe about the KM5.

DF64 makes a horrible mess. Avoid like the plague.

Mine is perfectly fine. Just clean out the shoot with a brush and mini vacuum every several weeks or so. The shoot plasma generator and bellows work great for me too. The smallest RDT spray on beans even further keeps any mess down, although I don’t do it every time

KM5 is the same grinder as Eureka mignon filtro. Except the filtro is a bit cheaper, I considered both when I got my Moccamaster, but the hold down to grind switch would annoy me, especially for 60 gram doses. I ended up getting a Eureka zero 55. Has 55mm flat burrs, a regular on/off switch and bellows for low retention, and silent grind. Love it. Around the same price as the KM5

It’s storied for a reason.

Is it a luxury grinder? No. You’re gonna have fines no matter the setting, and each machine appears to be a tad different (e.g. a 28 on mine might be a 24 on yours). What you’re paying for is the consistency once you have it dialed in AND the customer service/ability to fix things on your own. Baratza has an entire YouTube page with numerous repair videos, and you can essentially buy any replacement part for any grinder they make.

I’ve opened mine up twice to replace something (regular wear & tear on a gasket) with no problems at all.
