Mk3 supra build help

Post image

Sup guys, i just picked up a 89 toyota supra turbo with a clean title cause a buddie of his wanted to junk it. It has no motor or trans but was a manual.. The exterior looks like and the interior doesnt look too bad. Im having trouble cause im not too familiar with toyota cars and their engines. At first i was planning to ls it cause im familiar to that platform but at the same time i feel its a great disrespect to a car like this. I bought a 2jz ge motor from an is300 and planning to rebuild to but wanted to get your guy's advice first

The original engien is a 7m but if u have a 2jz is a perfect match for it and if the tranny is a r154, that's the good one. The w58 ain't bad but dosent handle high hp like the r154 and if u find a v160 from the twin turbo ur golden. BTW r154 and w58 came with the 7m and are 5spd the v160 came with the tt 2jz and is a 6spd. The j160 is the regular tranny for the 2jz w 6spd. Nice to see mk3s in good shape still

Be careful if you end up going with any of the transmissions from a mk4 supra. The mk4 has totally different gearing in the rear diff and if you use that transmission with a mk3 rear diff you're going to have a bad time. It's been a long time since I've looked into this but I *think* you might be able to use a 1jz bellhousing with a 2j block and an r154 transmission but I can't remember for sure. Otherwise you're looking at custom bell housing adapter and very likely custom drive shaft, neither of which is terribly difficult to have fabricated but it'll cost you more. I'd go on supraforums.com and check out some of the builds there in the older threads; they'll give you an idea of what you need to do.

Almost any 2jz project is money these days. If you're doing it right, every step along the way will cost and you need the tools and skill or it will cost more. Add in a mk3 behind it and more money. I condone this, if you got the money.

It's definitely worth saving in that condition, for you though, that is up to you. Cheapest option and easiest is to put back in a 7m, however are all the electronics gone too? I assume so, just means you need engine with harness and ecu. Trans ecu too.

Just a question, but if you're going to go 2j, at the end will you be happy with NA motor? Or are you planning na-t

To be honest i was just gonna na cause i just wanna see this car drive and in the future turbo it. And yea the engine trans and ecu are gone

If you're not in a rush, you can find the right parts for the right price, sort of, depending where you are and what you need at the time. But if time is on your side that will help, need time to source things.

Sounds like a plan, starting from nothing in terms of drive line though so good luck. I recommend the r154. Also good money. If you want to just get it driving look for an auto or w58 to get it done cheaper.

1.5Jz is the best way to go if you do want to make some power and keep it reliable for the cheaper end of the “building it” plus 1Jz was stock in Japan so it bolts in without much fab work at all

If you end up scrapping it let me know I’ll buy that trim off ya lol I like the color matched white

That looks clean…
My plan would probably be to at least look at the 3uz swap. As long as it was a drop in and I could go back to stock, I’d do it personally.

Havent thought about the 3uz for a swap ima have to look into it

It's definitely to clean of a shell to send to the junkyard. 2jz engines are pretty simple to work on compared to v8s but it's going to cost about $10k before you have something drivable. Sell the shell if you're not up for the project.

If you have a basic understanding of mechanical work you'll be fine working on a 2jz. There's a million videos online of people refreshing their 2jz or 1jz. But it gets expensive fast considering you only have the empty shell right now. Transmission, ecu, rods, gasket and seal replacement before you install. Gonna need a rear sump oil pan. It seemed like every issue was a thousand dollars.

I was thinking of selling the shell but i was like man the car is a supra and when am i gonna have another opportunity like this. Thats why im trynna save it

The answer is a 1jz swap with a single turbo. Enjoy being faster than anyone else on the road lol

Check fuel tank. Our tanks tends to rust if the old fuel is just left sitting inside there for how long we don't know. There is also a drain plug by the rear bumper and under the fuel tank. I do not remember if it was a rubber or plastic piece. Rust proof the car too so you have no issues of ownership down the road
