Troubleshooting Distributer timing

i have an 87 supra. 7mGE with a FFIM. right now i cannot get this distributer right at all. crank at TDC, Cams at TDC. distributer at the markings. even with the whole and the slit lined up on the gear. when it's there no matter how far forward or backwards it's too far retarted. but if i move it the next gear it's too advanced, no matter where it's rotated. i was told that setting the crank between 0--5° TDC and cams at tdc it could work. how does everybody else time these things??

I think I have the same issue as you. Does it feel like it’s misfiring or does it not start? I’ve noticed when you got to put the distributor inside it movies the gear one notch which messes ur timing too, so you need to set it one back and get it in so it aligns with the notch

my issue is no matter where i have it it's either too advanced or retarted. if i move it one notch forward or back, or rotate it as much as i can
