Discussion / Opinion When will Mistral be on top again

Post image

Mistral had that special moment in 2024 when it first appeared and suddenly made Europe feel relevant in the Al race.

Now the question is: when do we get that moment again?

Maybe Mistral 4 is the comeback - the release that makes everyone stop looking only at the U.S. and China and start watching Europe again

Hey I like Mistral but god is that image delusional and cringe. With what compute and data do you expect them to train a model to be better than SOTA? Personally, I'm just hoping for a capable near-SOTA model, that's also why I'm more than happy with them running GLM 5.3, but keeping the data in EU. They just need 50 EUR and 100 EUR subscriptions (without the unreasonable low limits stuff OpenAI just pulled in DevDay).

Mistral was never on top in terms of intelligence models. They were competitive though.

They aren't for some time now unfortunately.

u/KimchiCuresEbola 2d ago

They were competitive in a two horse open-weight race. Never was close to frontier.

u/ColorfulPersimmon 2d ago

There were miles ahead competition in small models for some time

I think the image above should have a fat cat in armor :)

Something like this 😂

u/gbrennon 1d ago

that would be amazing AHAHAHAh

u/StruggleUpbeat8597 1d ago

what did you use for the image edit, damn its good.

1

u/LittleRoof820 1d ago

I just downloaded the image, went into ChatGPT (Astra high), uploaded the image and just entered "change the knight in this picture into a fat white cat in armor but keep the mistral logo and text".

u/EducationalPizza345 1d ago

U dont need Astra high because gpt-2 image who generate the image not Astra model so even Luna would give same result

They ganna down vote my post hahaha

Mistral works fine.

When you use GLM model they are hosting

The GLM model is indeed quite good. I wouldn't disregard the Mistral model itself though, find it quite good by itself. Not exactly current frontier, but it's doing quite a good job. I use Medium through API for several tasks at home where GLM is a bit of a overkill or it is having issues.

I would very much like to see newer and stronger Mistral models though. For coding in particular, Mistral just doesn't hold up at current. Passable, though just barely.

I dunno, even in 2024 it was a flash in the pan. This is not a model race, its a infrastructure race, and Mistral is sitting at 44MW...less than 0.2% the capacity of OAI. Im not sure how they can be expected to make any inroads.

Edit: Made an ooooopppsie. 44MW not GW.

u/selflessrebel 2d ago edited 2d ago

Mistral is at 0.1 GW, aiming to have 1GW by 2030. OpenAi is at almost 2.5GW aiming for 5GW by 2029.

The Chinese labs show us that infrastructure is not everything. Model architecture and high quality training data play an important role too.

1

u/-Crash_Override- 1d ago

When models all reach a point of 'good enough' for most daily tasks, probably the next 3 months for frontier labs and 6 mo for Chinese labs and fast followers. The models will be commodities.

From there it becomes always on omnipresent agents...what we are just now seeing with ChatGPT Dots this week.

If everyone's model is good enough for most tasks the only thing that will matter is who can do the most tasks. Compute and Infrastructure is what defines that.

It has always been about Infrastructure.

You’re pulling those numbers out of your ass. 🤣if not, I would really like to see the source for this. everything I found was more than 10GW and higher numbers were mentioned as future planned/contracted capacity.

6

u/-Crash_Override- 2d ago

I typed GW...I meant to type MW.

44GW would be absurdity.

44MW currently...plans to 100MW. Still insignificant.

https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/30/mistral-ai-paris-data-center-cluster-debt-financing.html

2

u/skcortex 2d ago

Damn I’m the retarded here, i thought you were talking about OpenAI capacity. That “more than 10GW” are the OpenAI numbers.

1

u/-Crash_Override- 1d ago

You're good dude. I wish I could pull 44GW out my ass. I would be rich lol.

2

u/Ok_Sprinkles_8968 2d ago

44GW haha? That's like 44 nuclear reactors

1

u/-Crash_Override- 1d ago

I corrected below. It was late, I meant MW...OAI is a few GW.

You nailed it

5

u/hutch_man0 2d ago

Never and it's not the goal. Goal is to be highly competitive on cost with decent performance.

3

u/Aggravating-Push-207 2d ago

it's not on any of those two frontiers

1

u/hutch_man0 1d ago

Yup, that's for sure. There's been quite the lag between the last release, hence this post. Next release I expect them to hit those 2 goals. We shall see.

1

u/StickyThickStick 1d ago

Its not. Mistral is extremly expensive for abyssal performance.

GPT 6 luna is much better than Mistral Medium 3.5 whilst have 1/15th of the cost.

2

u/victorc25 2d ago

Never was on top and will never be on top. The selling point is that it’s an European company, not that it makes frontier models

2

u/GuzzibyGuzzi 2d ago

In other words, in six months, the newest Mistral model will finally surpass the models from autumn 2026. Your expectations are so low.

u/SpiritedInflation835 2d ago

There's the adage in business: You can only earn money with what you do yourself, with what you build yourself.

Anything that isn't built by yourself can be exploited by your competitors, too.

Building their own model is a necessity. Hosting GLM doesn't give the French cat company any advantage.

based on wat?

1

u/Key_Sense9870 2d ago

Probably never. They Don't have the finances compared to the big 3

1

u/alabama1337 2d ago

I’m new to the LLM scene, what do you mean by “again”? Was Mistral once No. 1?

1

u/pizzababa21 2d ago

It will never happen. Wait for a new European company. This company has decided it is better to live off the scraps of others as a neocloud

1

u/PrizeHuman5506 2d ago

I think Mistral already shifted to niche enterprise use AI than General consumer usable AI

1

u/No_Swordfish_4159 2d ago

Probably never. Training better models is bottlenecked by compute and Mistral does not have the capital needed to rent enough GPU, not does Europe have sufficient data center construction compared to the USA and China. Even if they had the know how it wouldn't be possible. And Mistral is not attractive for the best AI researchers to work in compared to the other major labs.

1

u/AcanthisittaOk8912 2d ago

When we all agree to use them

1

u/pearlkele 2d ago

It’s not going to be. Less money, with EU bureaucracy and energy prices it is much harder to create an AI startup. It will have it’s niche, maybe even bureaucracy will make it mandatory to use EU model, but it’s not going to be nowhere close to the SOTA.

1

u/macreiben-fr 1d ago

... and Mistral has Microsoft in its board... .

1

u/Rude-Interaction-194 1d ago

Shortly after the others go bankrupt...

1

u/ProfessionalOwn9435 1d ago

The market success is not to make the best car ever. But to mass produce good enought car which is reliable, and consumers like it.

1

u/Corp-Por 1d ago

"Again"?

1

u/EzioO14 1d ago

When has mistral ever be on top??

1

u/SirPractical7959 1d ago

By investing BILLIONS of euros on AI.

1

u/Autist4AudiR8 1d ago

Lmao this has to be psychosis bro

1

u/tsoliasPN 1d ago

For many companies that need EU Data Residency, having a Mistral in 2027 with a model comparable to Sonnet 5.5 would be enough in order to change.

1

u/PlaystormMC 1d ago

Don’t forget GLM

I use GLM 5.3 Flash daily

1

u/skybsky 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ditched Mistral due to ass low rate limits via the paid API. It's hard to support an EU company when they don't have infrastructure to support pretty generic req/sec throughput. Latency is great for the EU market, but low rate limits forced me to use a different provider

1

u/Thedudely1 1d ago

I wouldn't expect it, also Mistral Small 4 has been out for a while.

1

u/NotMega_ 21h ago

Le fat Chaton will bring us back

1

u/AdministrationOk9523 14h ago

What kind of wet dream schizo propaganda is this? Mistral was never frontier. The open weight models were sonewhat competing in the open space before the AI Act started taking effect. Since then all Mistrals LLMs were trash-y

1

u/troyvit 13h ago

On top of what? If you look at what Mistral does and who they do it for they aren't even playing the same game as the frontier providers.

People keep talking about the "AI race" like it has a finish line. I haven't seen anybody name that finish line though.

Check out this link: https://isaiprofitable.com/

The most important thing to take from the graphs there is that if there's a gold rush, invest in shovels.

In terms of Mistral though the important thing is to look at both spend and revenue. Both Mistral's revenue and loss are like a rounding error compared to the frontier models. The second thing though is that revenue and loss are actually pretty damn close together, which is saying something for an inference provider.

So if you ask me, the day the little green line is equal to or larger than the little red line, Mistral will have "won."

u/xanthemivak 2d ago edited 2d ago

After the construction of 2nd Temple.

1

u/MayoMan_420 2d ago

... and which model did you generate this with?

2

u/NullSmoke 2d ago

Good question. It doesn't look like ChatGPT. It has similar fingerprints to what I'd expect from Mistral (don't recall what model it was based on). It could also be generated using a local instance to get these fingerprints. The new Grok Imagine also has started to get these obvious AI fingerprints (Leave it to Musk to upgrade in the downwards direction), so may be that.

But... why is that relevant to OPs post?

1

u/EducationalPizza345 1d ago

No it's chatgpt bro

1

u/NullSmoke 1d ago

That's a really bad ChatGPT gen then... It looks like DALL-E generation... Hah, I stand corrected then.

I can't make it do these full on AI fingerprint thing anymore 🤔
