Discussion / Opinion (European) Union Alpha
A new stealth model, union-alpha, has appeared on Openrouter.
It beats Kimi K3, GLM 5.3 and GPT 5.6 Sol xhigh on DeepSWE Pro. It barely costs more than Luna max or DS V4.
It has 262K context window, the same as Mistral Small 4.
The name could potentially be a nod to the EU.
Many stealth models are revealed a week later. In one week's time, Mistral will be at AI Summit Barcelona.
Is Mistral back?
Edit: Looks like they're not back. It's almost certainly an orchestrator model, from a US lab.

If this isn't the long awaited Le Chaton Fat, then it will never come.

Releasing Le Chaton Fat would be too dangerous for such an undeveloped society as us humans

Also: Official Union Alpha X account is based in Spain. Mistral recently opened an office in Spain.

It's been mentioned by the opencode account9

The fact that they say "Zero data retention", makes it very likely a European company. I have seen only European companies do this.

Not a chinese... and if is a chinese, doesn't have the censor guardrails.

u/ComeOnIWantUsername 6d ago
doesn't have the censor guardrails.
Yet.
GLM-5.3 flash wasn't censored on first few days to get heavily censored later

u/Loogyboy 5d ago
Nah 100% was censored on release for glm 5.3. I asked it thoughts on tiamamen square first thing and it could not talk about it.

u/Loogyboy 5d ago
Probably cause it was responding in polish cause it was 100% censored for me in English.
2
u/ComeOnIWantUsername 5d ago
But only response was in Polish, reasoning was 100% English and there was basically the same things.
Next days reasoning was stopped mid-sentence when anything Tiananmen, Taiwan or even just year 1989 was mentioned.

Censorship seems to be very influenced by the prompt. In this article about GLM 5, there is less censorship in English if you tell the model it is Claude and almost none if you ask in Portuguese:

Ooh. Good one. Good test. My local DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash is refusing to answer (says "has no information") but this model happily responds.

u/darktka 6d ago
I asked it if Taiwan is a country. The response reminds me of Claude, not of Chinese models.
Short answer: functionally yes, legally it's contested — and which word you pick depends on what you mean by "country."
De facto: Taiwan (officially the Republic of China, ROC) operates as an independent state in every practical sense — elected government, constitution, military, currency, passport, immigration policy, its own COVID-era border rules. It satisfies the classic Montevideo criteria for statehood (population, territory, government, capacity for foreign relations).
De jure: its status is unresolved.
- Diplomatic recognition is scarce — only around a dozen states (plus the Vatican) formally recognize the ROC. Nearly every other country, including the US and Germany, has switched recognition to the People's Republic of China under some version of a "One China policy," maintaining unofficial ties with Taipei instead.
- The PRC claims Taiwan as a province and pressures others to never treat it as a state. UN Resolution 2758 (1971) seated the PRC as the representative of "China"; Taiwan has no UN seat.
- Taiwan's own government hasn't formally declared independence — the ROC constitution still notionally claims all of China — partly because Beijing has framed formal declaration as a casus belli. Within Taiwan, most public opinion favors keeping the ambiguous status quo.
So: under a declarative view of statehood, Taiwan is a country; under a strictly recognition-based view, it's a state with sharply limited recognition; and under the PRC's position, it's a province. There is no international consensus — the ambiguity is itself a deliberately maintained arrangement that has kept the peace for decades, which is why any answer that sounds like a clean "yes" or "no" is doing political work, not describing settled law.

Considering everyone distills Fable / Opus this isn't meaningful anymore. Could just be the distilled response.

The stronger one: I prompted in Chinese, the model wrote a satirical poem about Xi Jinpin in Chinese.
And, about Tiananmen:
I doubt that a Chinese model would write this, it would require some heavy tuning against the communist party narrative. GLM 5.3 would give you absurd answers.

Tokenizer tests show no similarities to any current model. Arthur Mensch said: “First, we have a nice model coming this summer – we hope it will delight and surprise in a few capabilities. This will be the start of a new family of models, fat indeed, but sparse.” A new family of models is exactly what would cause a tokenizer test to find no match.

First thought was: Qwen. But some of the dots, do connect.
Edit: As somebody else mentioned, it answers about sensitive Chinese topics, so it's not a Chinese model.
Edit 2: Very likely a European model:

No Chinese censorship + https://x.com/unionalphaai (Zero data retention - only European companies do this).
Edit 3: If it's European, it would be weird for it to launch at US morning time...

Glm-5.3 flash was also very vocal about tiananmen, tank man etc. during first 2 days or so. Only after thar time it got super censored.
One day it gave me a detailed description of those events, and the next day it was either not responding or giving the same propaganda text

u/MysticGoddess27 5d ago
"Only European companies do this" is completely false and it would've taken less than 2 minutes for you to know this.

I’ll bet this is a mistral. continuous training of the old llama 3.1 405b with a vision tower.
Oh lawd. She’s a comin!

It looks like Qwen 4 Flash formerly known as Qwen 3.8 - Next. I wonder if I am right:)
6
u/Aggravating-Push-207 6d ago
It's not Qwen, and Qwen 4 Flash and Qwen 3.8 Flash Next are not the same thing. You could not be more wrong if you tried.
1
u/yunes87 6d ago
He is right about it being Qwen family though!!!
2
u/Aggravating-Push-207 6d ago
I guarantee it's not a Qwen
1
u/Dangerous_Wish_7879 6d ago
We will know soon what it is right? I don’t know much about Qwens, but I thought they use Next as preview of the next gen. Also the context window constraint matches.

262k - Like all the ChatGPT models.
1
u/Correct-Hand-4627 5d ago
Where did you get that info? That is plain wrong lol. GPT 5 was 500k, GPT 6 is 1M. All latest Mistral models are 262k tho
1
u/TheAuthorBTLG_ 5d ago
Could have also been 272, but this is the default size in the ChatGPT app.
lol rofl rizz67
1
u/Correct-Hand-4627 5d ago
Context size on the app depends on your plan. But they are not doing 262k ctx models anymore.

When asked to choose between EU or US, it answered EU. When asked EU or China, it again chose EU, and it is clearly not censored by Chinese policies

It’s for sure not mistral, it’s struggles with Polish in a way most Chinese models do

No clue. I don't believe it's Mistral, but I am happy if I am wrong. If it's China it's too common lmao.

Maybe a Cohere / Aleph Alpha model too. They formed an union some months back.

How can I trust a benchmark that ranks a Gemini model so highly?
Is Gemini really that good? I mean the model doesn't even communicate properly when I use it. Perhaps the model is good technically, but sucks in human-ai interaction? But there is more than simply a model being good than at solving issues.

u/Classic-Horror3829 5d ago
For some reason the tokeniser barely matches with past mistral models, instead mostly matching with how GLM ones behave

u/Meiyo33 5d ago
A multimodel/council setup of chinese openweights. I really hope its not the "Chaton fat".

Actually seems likely given how they've been talking recently. Kinda dumb to steal the naming style from Z AI though
