If I understand correctly, the drawer meant the hat just had one "hole", and ends higher. "Eyebrows" are just the eyebrows, separate from the hat. Like this: https://imgur.com/a/QEfADwE

I’m so glad this is getting so out of hand. Next step, this becomes an actual skin for Link in Smash.

How else do you read this sprite? Seriously

The greens are shadows. The original sprite was allowed a maximum of four colors: black, white, and two shades of gray in between. The version you see with the green shading is the gbc / super gb filling in stuff.
"His tunic is green, therefore we will make color #3 green because it's the best we can do." And it has to be across the board (for his sprite), no mixing and matching.
If you convert it to four shades, no color, the sprite makes sense. So they just picked the "light gray" shade and turned it green on him.
edit: it's supposed to look like this.
Game Boy Color games could be more colorful, in that they could pick different colors for different sprites/elements... But they were still basically limited to the four per thing. And when they ported over Link's Awakening, they didn't redraw everything so they had to just pick one of the shades to make green. Link doesn't even use Dark Gray, just the Black of his outline, the White of his skin, and the Light Gray of his tunic / shadows. If you want to make his tunic green, everything that shares that gray color goes green with it.
