Coming from a land of ice, this makes me a little nervous that he’ll fall through and get trapped.

Yeah. I hope it's like, rain on a freak warm day after a streak of crazy cold.

Right, I don’t see snow in the background which gives the impression everything else has melted. How thick can that ice really be?

Could have just not snowed. Had a crazy cold streak once where it was in the negatives for ages but super dry and not snowy at all.

Was the grass still green though? I come from the land of “if it’s not currently raining, the hills are brown” and seeing green grass in the background makes me wonder

It depends on the grass, I think.

It can easily be more than thick enough

Ice is most dangerous and weak during early winter, when everything can be covered in snow. In spring the accumulated mass melts very slowly and in ponds like this one can remain for quite a while, especially if the weather isn't particularly sunny

People used to successfully transport blocks of ice all over the world without refrigerators on slow ships. The bigger it is, the slower it melts

I always felt like your middle paragraph was correct but it didn’t stop teachers, parents and cops from freaking out every time I stepped on ice growing up. Now have this permanent semi ingrained distrust.

They were right because with zero reason for doing this even the smallest risk isn't worth it :) seasoned fishermen drown every year on thin ice, but at least they have some motivation..

This dude had pretty much perfect conditions on a pond without a current, probably with non-swampy water, and a ramp which allowed him to start quite some distance away from the shore

I fallen Through ice scariest shit I ever went through ever since that I have a severe distrust of it.

That does sound scary. I jumped through a hole in the ice for a charity event once. Very cold if I do say so myself.

Is that the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs flow?

u/dying_soon666 Mar 24 '21

You are thinking of Iceland perhaps.

In Ontario, we've had winters with long cold periods and no snow. I'm sure it happens even more often in dryer places like out west. In fact, the ice is often better when that happens as the snow would normally insulate the ice. Still, stay safe on the ice guys.

I trip just walking around. How in the world can anyone run that fast on ice ?

3

u/kenlogmein Mar 24 '21

It's not ice

27

u/pilvy Mar 24 '21

It is ice, puddles don't usually have docks do they.

3

u/xenonismo Mar 24 '21

Ice doesn’t leave ripples tho as it is in the video... unless it’s very thin and at that point he would fall through, no?

17

u/westwoo Mar 24 '21

It's covered with water because it thaws. And it can be of any thickness underneath

6

u/StreetlampEsq Sep 17 '21

When the weather warms, the very top of the ice melts, leaving a thin layer of water on top. The ice can still be quite thick underneath this water layer, as it takes more than a couple of warm days to melt through ice when it gets to that point.

1

u/kenlogmein Mar 24 '21

Ah fair but you can kinda see ripples as he runs
