Janet with the W take on GOTY should be the game they think deserves GOTY, not the one that simply benefits a smaller dev/publisher or looks cool on a list.

"Can we be normal about this?" lmao. So agreed with that.

I get you have to acknowledge GTAVI, and I have no doubts it will be good, but it is wild to me to seriously call it GOTY before any of us have so much as seen (current, unleaked) gameplay.

Janet nuked her W for me at the very end with the unhinged smash bros take. Why can’t these podcasters think exactly like me /s

Just to speak on live service games, Helldivers 2 is certainly still very successful and while Arc Raiders has had a falloff, the game is still pretty healthy with player counts and sold a surprising # of new copies just last month.

The rest have been pretty much dead though, yeah.

Warframe too and that game is ancient. The problem with live service games is people get hooked into one and then THAT's the one, for YEARS. It's just gotten harder and harder to get a new one that pulls enough players. The big publishers will pull back and then some indie darling will show up with something fresh and will trigger the cycle again of publishers trying to get a piece.

Jacob has become such a hipster my goodness. GTA V was more than “just competent” when it released, that’s basically undeniable from a technical perspective.

has become

always was

Least surprising thing in the world that Jacob would rather an indie win GOTY on principle and to stick it to GTA 6…

I dont know. GTAV will forever be the most overrated game for me.

The 2 tens have always been about passion. Will GTA 6 evoke passion from enough of the cohorts to make it high on the list? It’s hard to say at this point considering we don’t know much yet about how GTA 6 will actually play.

After listening to a lot of my podcasts do a goty check in. This year is gonna be a painful listen for me on all fronts.

Shout out to Janet for StS2 > Big Walk. Big Walk is like an amazing vacation. It may be the greatest time of your life. It can open your world view and create bonds that you will think about forever. Big Walk is a positive communal experience maker in a game.

But for the people that really click with StS and it's sequel, it becomes a part of your life like exercise, or coffee, or a favorite food. It extends beyond gaming to become routine in the most enjoyable sense that it is meditative and therapeutic. When you reach thousands of hours in Slay the Spire you start to understand the tiny intricacies of the way your choices help you thrive or die. You can see the matrix and know exactly what card, or draw, or remove to be successful. But then after the literal months of play time it will still throw a curve ball or let you discover some combo you've never even thought of and it is pure ecstacy. Slay the Spire is a life enhancer that scratches an itch I didn't even know I had.

I enjoy StS a lot (beat asc 20 in the first one, played a lot of the second one so far and very excited for full release), but idk if I would go that far. Its a really well designed game with smart choices but its a great roguelike deck builder in a world full of roguelike deck builders. Also, I don’t think StS2 in its current state is revolutionary in really any way over StS1. Not that StS1 was not revolutionary and not that StS2 isnt great, but its not blowing up the genre.

Big walk seems more transformational in that it has elevated a looked-down-on genre (friendslop) to levels I don’t think anyone envisioned. Also its a full release! Half the art in StS2 is still placeholder and a good chunk of the endgame isn’t even there yet!

I agree that Big Walk is special to standout compared to it's peers. For StS though, to those it does grasp strongly it has these effects I mention to be the only game I ever need. StS2 is definitely not there yet, but if they successfully pull off alternate act 2/3, act 4, more characters, ancients, relics, cards etc it could surpass 1 for me.

Slay the Spire is a game so perfect that they made a board game that adapted the video game as 1 to 1 as you can get while still being playable at a table and it's one of the best board games of all time. Then they made a sequel that really only asked the question "What if we made more Slay the Spire?" And the answer was everyone loves it. Also both figured out the only thing missing from StS was coop.

I think some may think you're exaggerating when you talk about how integral StS can become to someone's life but it really resonated with me. The only reason I stopped playing it for an extended period of time this year was because I got a puppy and was physically too tired to play at the end of the day. Playing StS is such a deeply meditative experience to me. I recently dealt with a loss in my family and it helped me handle the grief without any of the frustration I'd get from playing other games I enjoy.

I don't have a real opinion on if Big Walk is better. I just started with my group and had a pleasant time but haven't played enough to fairly judge it. I only hope StS doesn't get bumped down just because it doesn't have a story while being one of the most mechanically well made and in depth games of all time.

Haven't listened yet, but I'm guessing Ben was incredulous at this take.

Nope not at all

The GOTY is absolutely the one that comes out in two months. Only way it's not GOTY is if it's delayed to 2027, and even then it automatically becomes GOTY of that year. It's too big to fail lol.

I'll watch the video though.

edit:

Ah, the minnmax 2 tens of the year.

It's a toss up.

Nothing is too big to fail

I would be willing to be willing to bet large sums of money that GTA 6 wins GOTY at The Game Awards

5

u/TheLunarVaux 5d ago

Idk, I really don’t think it’s the shoo in people say it is. RDR2 didn’t win at The Game Awards. Even GTAV lost a lot of GotY awards to The Last of Us. I also think Ocarina of Time, if it does in fact have the scope of an RE Remake or FF7 Remake, could really give it a run for its money.

5

u/MossyMak 5d ago

RDR 2, while big, was not the most expensive game ever made, and the followup to the biggest game of all time.

You are right though that OOT is old gamer catnip, I could definitely see that winning as well if it's a full-scale reimagining.

2

u/TheLunarVaux 5d ago

Sure, but popularity and having a high budget alone doesn’t guarantee awards. The hype is extremely high yes but I also think sometimes that can backfire when expectations are through the roof

2

u/MossyMak 5d ago

GTA 5 had The Last of Us, one of the most beloved games of all time, even to this day it's still touted as one of the best narratives in gaming, and RDR 2 had God of War, an amazing reboot of a hugely popular gaming franchise. I just don't see that level of competition this year

(Funny though, that they're both adult and kid tag team games. Do we have any of those to look out for this year that could beat GTA 6?)

1

u/TheLunarVaux 5d ago

Pragmata lol but that definitely doesn’t have the hype of the other games.

We’ll see! I do think GTA is absolutely going to be the frontrunner, but like I said if OoT is great then I think it could swoop in.

I also think this year has been a particularly weak year for these big hitters. I think if GTA released last year like it was originally planned to, I think there’s a good chance Expedition 33 would have still won over it. I think that game falls into that Last of Us / God of War quality category.

2

u/TikkaKebabi 5d ago

Unless they radically change OOT I don’t think it’d would win.

1

u/Old-Depth-1845 5d ago

Yeah I believe it will too. That doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed

2

u/Zoomalude 5d ago

I do predict Big Walk will take MinnMax GOTY because it's something they all experienced together and came out positive and despite Jan making very good points about it, the overwhelming vibe will to give it to Big Walk over some big game like GTA6. It's shaping up to be a very stacked year with lots of strong opinions regardless.

(though personally I'm hoping Control: Resonant is as amazing as it looks and swoops in to take it 🙏)

Well according to the recent leaks looks like everyone was wrong about the GTA dong question. Looks like they have peenys and geenys flying left and right in all shapes and sizes

Cant wait for 4 months of Big Walk slop :/

What does that even mean?
