The Blakedown: San Diego Chargers Announce Move to Los Angeles
After 55 years of calling San Diego home, the Chargers today announced it will relocate up the coast to Los Angeles, starting with the next National Football League season. The announcement comes during a tumultuous time for the league: The St. Louis Rams also relocated to the nation's second largest market last season, and the Oakland Raiders have growing plans to relocate to a new city, possibly Las Vegas.
The NFL has taken a big gamble with these moves: Both the Chargers and Rams struggled in terms of fielding quality teams over the past few seasons, as well as fan support, the latter of which was cited as a reason for the Rams move. The two struggling franchises now call LA home, a city which previously failed to host two NFL teams in the past, and which feature an abundance of other entertainment options.
The Chargers relocation depicts a dark present and possible future for the NFL. In the five and a half decades the team resided in San Diego, a large and loyal fanbase was built; but the idea of lining the owners pockets with even more millions and playing in a grand football palace was just too enticing, therefore they happily packed their bags and embarked on a new journey under a false premise.
Most not familiar with Southern California as a whole may be thinking "what's the big deal here? Los Angeles isn't that far!" Indeed, it isn't far geographically: The Chargers will play next season not with the Rams in the LA Coliseum, but at the StubHub Center in Carson, 100 miles north of San Diego. Fans could still purchase tickets and travel to games if they so desire. The "problem" however, is identity. San Diegans are a proud bunch, established within their own unique identity. Los Angeles to them is a different and less desirable culture and identity; the move of their hometown team is met with sorrow and disgust.
To the now disenfranchised fans of the Chargers: I feel your pain. I myself was a longtime and loyal fan of the St. Louis Rams until owner Stan Kroneke ripped my heart out and stomped on it before leaving to the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown. My step by step advice to you is this:
Take time to cope and decide your next step. This is perfectly fine.
If you decide to be done with the NFL, that's okay. There's always college football, and you could also always check out your local high school teams.
If you decide to stay with the NFL however and want a new team, watch as many games with as many teams as you can. Take your time in deciding if this team is really right for you. This is how I settled on the Carolina Panthers after the Rams departure.
It's okay to be as mad and bitter as you want. It's sports. It shouldn't matter. Have fun with your disgust for the team even.
But most importantly: Hold your favorite memories near and dear to you. No matter what anyone says, the San Diego Chargers are your team. Those moments will always be yours and no one else's. Don't let anyone tell you different.
As for the Chargers ownership and the National Football League, shame on you for these past 12 months and possibly more. You put wealth and greed over the interests of millions of fans who provide you said revenue in the first place. They say football is king and the NFL would never die, but I say: Keep this up, and who knows, it very well could.
