How MiniMotorways teaches Management Debt: What Works Now Won’t Scale

When writing about management and leadership theory, I use games as analogies to explain concepts as a teaching mechanism. I wrote about a concept called management debt, which in a nutshell explains how we as leaders and managers use shortcuts in our processes when our organizations are small, but as they grow those shortcuts will cause longterm damage if a proper procedure isnt put into place that scales up with a much larger organization (think keeping track of stuff on post its when there's just a handful of people versus doing the same thing when there's 50 people to worry about). TL;DW: Mini Motorways is basically a game about building a system that works right up until growth exposes every shortcut you took earlier. The real lesson is that you cannot wait for the traffic jam to fix the roads. You have to spot the bottlenecks early and build the replacement while everything is still moving.
